Re:Ridiculously complicated poker math problem revisited. Can any human being solve this??
This is trivial: you don't say if villain calls 100%, but if he does: On the button, your stategy is to shove or fold: you shove anything which wins against a 100% rabge more than 9,950/10,000 = AA KK QQ JJ TT9988 AKs77 AQs AKo AJs AQo ATs66 KQs AJo KJs ATo A9s KTs KQo A8s55 KJo A7s A9o QJs K9s KTo A8o A5s A6s QTs A4s A7o QJo K8s A3s44 K9o Q9s JTs QTo K7s A5o A6o A2s K6s A4o Q8s K8o J9s A3o K5s JTo Q9o K7o A2o33 K4s Q7s T9s J8s K6o K3s Q8o Q6s J9o K2s K5o Q5s T8s J7s K4o Q4s Q7o T9o J8o22 K3o Q3s Q6o 98s T7s J6s K2o Q2s Q5o In the BB, you call with the above minus Q5o, which is only ...

Re(1): Short Stack Strategy - Tables Included
Maybe no replies, because you can calculate the cEV of shortstack shoves mathematically. Are your tables the result of a math process, or just a hunch' OK, I just looked at them, they are way off the maths, eg UTG 9 handed you can shove 22 with an M of 2.4 or less against tight opponents, but it is not +EV to shove it against a looser table. Against a loose BB, you can profitably shove 32o with an M of 6.8 or less from the SB, assuming it folds to you. Gl

Re(5): farm subsidies and zpaceman's article
This argument is completely false: farm subsidies are not part of the defense budget. It is an argument used by self-serving politicians to try to justify an economic idiocy, but it does not hold true. The USA is dependent on many imports, but for the purposes of national defence retains the strategic capability to replace these imports in the run up to war. In short, food production will not be a problem. One of the main problems with subsidies is that they provide a disincentive to innovation. They are in place because US farmers cannot compete with farmers in other countries. Usually this ...

Re(7): Deep in MTT, Please Help
Here you identify the difference between the professional and the amateur way of thinking. The amateur mistake is to think that the difference in prize money between, say 12th and 5th is significant. It isn't. If you think it is, then you will be unable to make the plays you need to make to put yourself in position to get a top 3 finish. So the professional is happy as a happy thing to get all-in here with AK and if villain has QQ, so what' Your getting a 45%+ chance to make a big increase in your chips. For the amateur, the seduction of winning an extra $100 or whatever, can be a ...

Re(2): Building a Bankroll from $0
In your position, I would play freerolls on Intertops Poker, and as soon as you have won $1, start to play their 9c+1c STTs. Move up when you have $25. Cash out when you have $100 and play the 1c/2c 6 max NL games on Stars (2c/4c full ring if you can get onto PP - both are $5NL buy-ins). Now start to move up in 6 max cash: when you have 25 buy-ins move up, so $250, move to 10NL, $625, move to 25NL. When you have $1200, start to play MTTs, but only with moneys you have won in excess of your expected income for a month, eg at 25NL, you should be winning 8+ptBB/100. If this is casual and you are ...

Re(1): just starting out
1. I agree that you should NOT buy in for the full amount, $2 is fine at this level. 2. Don't move up until you have 20 buy-ins min for the new level. 3. You earn very few FPPs at 1c/2c, so no I don't think you'll get there. 4. At 2c/5c you can buy in for $5, but thereafter you need a full buy-in 5. Until you learn a lot more, tight is right! Fold to reraises and large bets on turn and river unless you have a set or better. If you do don't be afraid to go bust with it, bet pot sized bets on all streets. Very best of luck

Perhaps my most bizarre experience as a pro happened today: I have been helping out a friend by teaching English in his language institute while he is away on business and my wife has just complained to me that I'm not playing enough poker!

Re(1): Question for the SNG people
Stats don't look good! The whole point of stats is that they need to be significant. At this stage you don't know if you are a winning player or not. After 2000 SNGs, review where you are and then decide to move up or not. 10%+ROI = MOVE UP!

Top Ten ALL TIME means Gigabet is No 1 by a huge margin. Hard to beat SBRugby for No2, I'm voting for BigJoe No3, then Apathy, Raptor and er about 30 others tie for 6th. All the rest are a long way behind.

Google this for very long threads elsewhere. Short answer is yes if you are religious, no if your not or for 95% ... total apathy on the question. Personally I have no faith my As will hold, but I do trust the statistics. Over 1 million religions in the world, statistically they must all be bollocks.

Seriously good advice! & yes, congrats again, I was watching you regain your feb numbers in both those 109s! Peru has no rythm, things just happen, normally late. Hunting is very good, and we have bigger rivers here than you do in the US, so depends on what you want to catch. And you will have the same standard of living if you earn 2k a month here as 10k a month in the US. Fantastic place to bring up kids.

Re(2): Playing Professionally
Easy one: had no money, no job, living in a foreign country where I couldn't speak the language; business went bust in the UK, BUT I had c$200 on-line in a Party account, and confidence that I was intelligent enough to learn to beat the game. Took two months to cash out the first $1200. Then Frist screwed things up and I had to work v hard. Ultimately went down to 1c/2c NL before rebuilding.

Playing Professionally
About a year ago, I posted my intention to go professional. I was a losing player with a $200 bankroll, a wife and 2 year old to support. I read Assassinato's article, and thought it excellent, but perhaps focussed too much on the negative. 10 months later, I've learned to play the game, wife and child are fed, school fees paid, and I'm just about to start building us a new home. My only income has been from poker. First, I live in Peru: this means I have to win less to get a high standard of living eg my maid works from 7am to 7pm, half days saturdays, and earns less than $100 a month. I ...

Re(6): Another ICM question
ICM calculates the expected value of pushing or calling a push or folding. STTs are different to cash games or MTTs because of the payout structure; it is this structure which creates counter-intuitive situations where the optimal play is the one which gives the greatest $EV as opposed to the one which gives the greatest chip EV. The structure creates a bubble which can be exploited by good use of ICM, but this does not negate the need for good reads. ICM works when you assign a range of hands to villain and calculate the probability of him having one of those hands and calling, the ...

Re(3): Best SitNGo players
Re pushbot strategy: over $215 STTs on Stars you need to know ICM AND have good reads. No point knowing what hands beat what push/fold ranges, if you can't put the player on a range. As Bigjoe once said "without my reads, I am nothing".

Re(5): Best SitNGo players
Don't be silly, BigJoe is the best SNG player in the world by a very large margin. You may have seen him suckout, but over the volume of games he plays he has experienced every possible sort of variance. Joey's playing maybe 200+ SNGs a day at the moment, lol at him being able to play under Rainkhan's name too ... Riverprayer, innisint and Dariomineri are probably good bets for top 10. Elky is not good at SNGs, no matter how good he is, and he is, at other forms of poker.

Re(1): Bankroll Management
On $500 you can play 10c/25c 6 max ring. If you drop below $450, you should drop down to 5c/10c games. This is a risky strategy. Yes, this is a high risk strategy, and it demands discipline. You sound like discipline is your problem, so it's probably wrong for you. Until you can rigidly adhere to BRM, you should play 5c/10c until your roll is c$700, then take a few stabs at 10c/25c. If you lose $100, go back down. When you have $1,500 you can start to take a go at .5/1, again if you lose $200, drop down again. Why' You can't play well if your worry too much about losing money. If you can't ...

Hand 1: Fine Hand 2: Fine Hand 3: Shove flop with your pair and draw. Hand 4: Fine Hand 5: Read dependent: If there is a good chance the CL will fold to your reraise, then it's OK, if he's a nit it isn't, if he's a good player it isn't. You should fold this. Hand 6: Fine The difference between winning money or losing in SNGs is small. You have to know your ICM backwards. You are probably losing because you miss shoves not because you get bad beats when you do shove. Over 221,000 hands luck evens out ...

Re(3): simple sng question
With your stack and TT there is a good case for just shoving this pre-flop. You are not committed to a call here, so against a tight multitabling regular, you can fold and get away. Against anyone else, it's a call. Critically, if you fold you will need two double ups to get to the money and you are unlikely to get much better cards than TT in the time you have left. If you know the KS numbers and your ICM, you may have a better chance of making the money if you fold. If you don't, then you have to call this.

Re(4): Cash Game Players, Suited Connectors - What Is The Point?
Agree strongly that SCs can be very profitable, but if played badly which is more normal at SSNL, they are a common weakness and just leak money. Hand 1: If you cannot see that this is an obvious all-in, you are playing too weak tight. You hit half the time you are called so being called is not the profitable play. Shoving here makes money because your opponent folds most of the time. At SSNL, an A or 3 flush on the flop normally generates a check from villain if he has the scare card OOP. Check behind, and if he bets the turn fold. If he checks, bet the pot. If he calls this, you are done ...

Re(8): Putting Online Poker on a Resume?
1. There are a number of jobs where being able to say you are a good poker player is an advantage eg front office jobs in investment banks or as GP said, hedge funds. 2. If you have been making a living as a poker player for two years, you should be honest, set it out as it is = you've beeen running a business for two years and now understand all the business related aspects that employed people don't understand. Each element of achievement which you list in your resume should be directly related to the competences required of the job you're applying for. 3. For serious jobs, it's always ...

Re(1): Is this normal variance?
I think for a high volume multi-tabler a 50 buy-in downswing is not unusual. But, it probably isn't just variance. It's more likely to be variance accompanied by bad play. You need to determine what the bad play is and fix it, and you need to ensure that the psychological impact of the downswing will not affect how you play in the future. Some good advice I've read and taken: 1. Take a break. 3 days to a week off. 2. Play a set of (max) 4 tables and afterwards analyse every single hand. Get someone else to do this with you. 3. Play some 6 max Ring at a level you can afford. Thinking about ...
