Since you didn't state anything about what you will be doing on your new computer, have to assume this will be mostly a poker/net browsing/multimedia machine. That makes this a no-brainer and spending $1000+ is overkill. Skip the iMac and don't build your own. iMac's are obv. sweet but you're getting taxed on form factor and building your own saves only a small amount of money. I would suggest getting something cheap but still good enough to stay relevant for a few years. That means

<3 p5's but this is not the best place to get computer advice. People who nerd out on this the way we nerd out on poker have proven beyond any question that building your own computer or "custom" as you are putting it here does NOT save significant money over Dell, HP or other oems. In fact, Dell builds computers on such a tiny price margin it's amazing they are profitable at all. They do put "bloatware" on their machines, but it is easy to discard.
