I was in a union and now supervise union employees (i'm non union now). Unions def have their good and bad points. There is a certain degree of job security thanks to seniority, so if say a shop or building closes they can bump someone at another shop or building, assuming its the same local. Maybe your friends were trying to get jobs in a different local union. Even though the supermarkets may be right down the block from each other, they could still have different union reps.
