Late play in Tourneys

By preston0505 | Published Jan 22 2008, 12:28 PM |

I have been cahsing in almost every MTT I play but never seem to make the big cash! I have made a few final tables in the past 2 months but never have enough chips to make a top 2-4 finish. My question is do you change your style up to be more aggressive once reaching the money and "Go for it"?? I usually seem to finsh 20-80th in MTT's and just cant figure out what im doing wrong once mid way through making the money. The blinds seem to get so big and with other players being allin happy this late do you just have to pick a hand and go with it? Ill wait for advice thanks

From what i have learned over the years, the late stages of play are tough to navigate your way through.  Nobody really wants to get involved in any pots unless they have to(either very shortstacked or big hand).  That being said you should be quite agressive, use poker tracker or another form of tracking software and look at who has low VP(voluntarily puts money in pot) and who has low PR(preflop raise) percentages and attack their blinds.

Ever notice when its late in the trny and you get AA or AK and you are the first to enter the pot everyone folds?  Why do you have to have AA to achieve that outcome...if you are the first to open the pot for a raise you are likely to take the blinds.

For stealing blinds, do it with hands that are easy to play if you get played with...id much prefer to fold A3 but raise 5-3, because if you raise 5-3 and they come of the top you arent compelled to call hoping he has KQ, and if he just calls you, now you have two ways to win the pot, you can have it come down with an A and represent that and he has to fold if he doesnt have an A, or if it comes down and connects to the 5-3 now you can bust him because he'll never suspet you to have this kind of holding.

With doing this there will be times where you attack a guy who is shortstacked and you are going to have to call him due to the odds being in your favour.  Dont be afraid to get reraised by a shortstack...they most often fold instead of reraise...this is why they are short. If they were always raising back they'd either be bust or bigstacked.

Hope this is what you were looking for.
