The 2012 World Series of Poker schedule was released on Wednesday and features 61 gold bracelet events, three more than were handed out in 2011 in Las Vegas. 2012 will be the 43rd running of the tournament series, which will once again emanate from the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. In order to accommodate the 2012 Presidential election, the WSOP Main Event November Nine will be pushed forward one week to October 28th to 30th.

The Main Event will see a considerable number of changes from 2011 to 2012. Aside from the November Nine being in October, there will only be three starting days this year for the $10,000 buy-in poker tournament that will take place on July 7th, 8th, and 9th. Day 2A, which takes place on July 10th, will host survivors from Day 1A and Day 1B, while Day 2B, which takes place on July 11th, will comprise only players who entered on Day 1C. Nearly 100 more poker tables will be used to accommodate an ample number of entrants.

Three days have been trimmed from the 2012 WSOP Main Event calendar. Aside from not having a fourth starting day, the tournament’s normal break day will also be cut this year. Finally, five full levels will be played daily, which shaves one more day off the tournament’s length.

On why the WSOP benefits from the Main Event being shorter, text found in a WSOP press release sent out on Wednesday noted, “Shortening the WSOP Main Event by three full days is expected to encourage greater participation. In addition, the costs associated with playing the event are reduced and there is less downtime between play.” The number of starting chips (30,000), the blinds in Level 1 (50-100), and the antes in Level 1 (none) will all stay the same this year in the Main Event despite the truncated structure.

Five new events have been added to the 2012 WSOP schedule. These include a $3,000 Heads-Up No Limit Hold’em/Pot Limit Omaha event, a $5,000 Mix-Max No Limit Hold’em event, a $2,500 Four-Handed No Limit Hold’em event, a $1,500 Ante Only No Limit Hold’em event, and a $1 million Big One benefiting the charity One Drop that ESPN will televise.
