The 2017 WSOP schedule has jam-packed 74 events into just 48 days (WSOP photo)

The 2017 World Series of Poker schedule was released on Wednesday with a total of 74 events including eight events making their WSOP debut, three online events, 16 $10,000 or above Championship events as well as the return of popular branded events such as Colossus.

“The focus of the schedule remains squarely on two core principles: the biggest prize pools possible and diversity in offerings to provide something for everyone,” said Jack Effel, WSOP Tournament Director. “The 48th running of the globe’s biggest poker series promises to deliver on these core principles and ensure another action-packed summer at the Rio.”

New Events for 2017

There are eight events on the 2017 schedule making their debut. The first is the $10,000 Tag Team Championship event. Coming off of the popularity of last year’s $1,000 buy-in Tag Team event, WSOP organizers have added a Championship-level event for this year.

Players who fly in for the lower buy-in weekend events will have yet another opportunity to play for a bracelet at a budget price. A $365 buy-in event dubbed “The Giant” will have a new starting flight each Friday beginning June 9. Day 2 of that event goes July 8 with the final table scheduled for July 9. The event features unlimited re-entry and starts at 7 pm, allowing those flying into town for events like The Colossus and the Millionaire Maker to check in to their hotel and get in WSOP action right away.

Other new events include The Marathon, with 100-minute levels, the $2,500 Big Bet Mix (No Limit Hold’em, Pot Limit Omaha, No Limit Deuce to Seven, No Limit Five Card Draw, Big O, PLO Hi-Lo, Pot Limit Triple Draw Deuce to Seven), a Pot Limit Omaha Hi-Lo Championship and two new online events.

Online Events

After having a $1,000 buy-in online event on the schedule in 2015 and 2016, it seemed like expanding the idea was a no-brainer. Effel and the WSOP schedule makers have brought the $1,000 event back and added a $333 event and a $3,333 High Roller event for 2017. All three events will start and finish on WSOP.com in a single day and will not stop for a live final table as has been the case in previous years.

Championship Events

The Championship events – open events with a buy-in of $10,000 or more – have become a showcase for the game’s best. Last year was no exception with eventual WSOP Player of the Year Jason Mercier winning two bracelets and finishing runner-up in another. This year there are 16 Championship events on the schedule.

Branded Events

The WSOP has had a love affair with giving events aimed at recreational players trendy brand names over the last few years. The first was the “Stimulus Special” in 2009. Since then they’ve added events like the Monster Stack, the Millionaire Maker and Colossus. This year they’ve added the previously mentioned Giant tournament to the schedule.

They’ve also renamed one branded event. The Summer Solstice is now known as The Marathon and instead of 90-minute levels, players get 100-minutes per level. The new name comes with a new buy-in as well; $2,620.

The Main Event

There are 73 other events on the 2017 WSOP schedule but to a majority of poker players around the world, the only one that matters is the Main Event. There are three starting flights this year beginning July 8. Players are scheduled to play five two-hour levels per day from July 8 – July 17 when only the November Nine will remain.
