Canada’s Shawn ‘buck21’ Buchanan won three SCOOP titles in 2016

The 2016 PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker saw a handful of countries bag double-digit titles. Among them was Canada, whose players won 14 SCOOP events,, tied for the third most overall with Germanytrailing Brazil’s 21 and the UK’s 20. It had 43,454 entrants overall in SCOOP events this year, good for fifth worldwide.

In SCOOP Low events, Canadians won four tournaments, tied for the third most overall behind Brazil’s 12 and Russia’s five. Canada was in a four-way tie with Germany, the UK, and Ukraine in Low event wins. The North American nation had 28,849 low-stakes entrants, the fifth most of any country.

In SCOOP Mid events, Canadians were also in a tie for third with four wins behind Germany’s seven and the UK’s seven; Canada was tied with Russia and Brazil in that department. Canadians won $2,895,826.53 in mid-stakes events, the second highest total of any country, and had 10,821 entrants in mid-stakes events, the third highest number of any nation.

In SCOOP High events, Canada shined. Canada came in second place on the worldwide leaderboard with six high-stakes wins, trailing only the nine scored by UK poker players. Canada scored the most money of any country in high events at $6,606,819.76, slightly ahead of the UK’s haul of $6,459,447.15. Canadians also had the most number of entrants in SCOOP High events of any country at 3,784.

Overall, Canadians booked $10,124,268.93 in winnings from this year’s SCOOP, the second highest total of any country behind the UK’s $10,200,660.00. That number was helped in part by Canadians reaching 117 total final tables during the 2016 series, the second highest total of any country behind the UK.

Shawn ‘buck21’ Buchanan won three events this year, which doubled his career SCOOP win total from three to six. He was the only player to win three SCOOP events in 2016.

In addition, Mike ‘goleafsgoeh’ Leah won two SCOOP titles this year, his first two titles all-time. “I’m a proud Canadian,” Leah said. That’s my home and that’s the country I represent.”

All-time, Canadians have earned $61,952,444.04 from SCOOP events, the most of any country in the world.
