A woman and two men were found guilty in a UK court this week of murdering professional poker player Mehmet Hassan (pictured). Hassan, 56, had become romantically involved with Leonie Granger, 25, after meeting her in a Mayfair casino. But authorities say that the poker pro was little more than a target for an easy robbery by Granger, her boyfriend Kyrron Jackson, and Nicholas Chandler, both 28.

Hassan, known to keep large amounts of cash hidden in his house, joked to friends that he was dating Granger, a woman 21 years his junior, without having to pay her for the privilege. “The truth, sadly, is that Granger was not interested in Mehmet Hassan for anything other than his money,” said prosecutor Crispin Aylett.

Hassan first met Granger, who worked as a care assistant, a month prior to the murder at Palm Beach Casino. On March 15, she met with Hassan again at the casino where they were seen kissing passionately while having drinks. An employee who recognized Hassan jokingly told the couple to “get a room.”

They then took a taxi back to Hassan’s apartment, where Granger promptly made excuses as to why she had to leave. The cab driver who took her home testified to overhearing Granger on the phone telling someone, “Swear down! I don’t believe it. Don’t tell me the money is not there! I saw it. Look in the drawer. Look in the cabinet.”

Authorities subsequently determined that when Granger left the victim’s apartment, she gave Jackson and Chandler access to the building. Once inside Hassan’s apartment, they bound the poker pro with duct tape and a necktie before stomping and kicking him to death. While Hassan lay dead, the trio celebrated the robbery by filming each other throwing around £50 bills and stuffing the money into their underwear.

When Granger (pictured) was arrested, she attempted to erase the damning video, along with several others, but was unable to delete everything. “While Mr. Hassan’s body lay undetected in his flat, his killers were literally throwing his money around.”

Additionally, Jackson and Kendall were found to have committed two other robberies at the same South Kensington casino in January and February. In both assaults, the men tied up employees and treated their victims with violence.

Granger told the jury that she had only planned to rob Hassan, but not murder him. Jackson also attempted to distance himself from the crime, telling the judge that he stayed in the car playing Flappy Bird and Candy Crush while Chandler entered the apartment and beat Hassan to death.

The jury didn’t buy it, and the two men were found guilty of murder, along with several other offenses related to the casino robberies. Granger was convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Members of Hassan’s family read impact statements to the court, describing him as a “very special and unique man,” a “witty and professional poker player,” and “a devoted and committed father.” Hassan’s daughter, Stephanie, described how her father had always helped to support her and her three children financially. Now, he has been robbed of his chance to see his grandchildren grow up. “Every day we miss him and we love him,” she said.

While the statements were being read, Chandler stood up and lashed out at the court and had to be subdued by six officers. After the man was removed from the court, Judge William Kennedy told the two remaining defendants that they would return for sentencing on April 28. “I think you understand you face very significant and immediate custody,” he said. “That will be all.”
