It’s free money Tuesday, the day after all the people playing NFL get paid. The only things to play in DFS today are a two-game MLB slate in the playoffs and a nine-game NHL slate tonight. I expect with the early start time and low guarantees for MLB action to be less than exciting, so I am devoting my energy to the NHL tonight. I just published a piece here for about how to play DFS hockey. If you know nothing, go read that now.

Two goalie options really stand out for me tonight. The two biggest favorites are the Stars and Kings, both going off at -175 right now and both playing at home. I like goalies at home since this allows coaches to control match-ups with skaters. I prefer Quick at 7.3k for cash games. It is not yet confirmed that he is starting, and he might get a day off after giving up 9 goals in the first two games of the season. If he sits, then expect Enroth (6.6k) to get the start and he makes an intriguing GPP option.

Fleury, Lundqvist, and Rinne are all favorites, but they are in tough spots facing Montreal, Winnipeg, and New Jersey.

For GPPs, I really like Kari Lehtonen at 6.7k, but he’s not confirmed yet, so make sure he’s starting. He’s the top favorite on the board and should face plenty of shots from Edmonton. Dallas plays a fast-paced game and is supposed to score the most goals of anybody tonight. Expect him to get the win from excellent goal support. EDM still has a team total of 2.45, though, so he will face some shots.

Dallas stands out as the top scoring team on the night and it’s not even close. Their team total is 3.3 and the next closest is the Rangers at 3. Dallas’ already potent offense got better with the acquisition of Patrick Sharp (6k) from Chicago. Sharpie is really good at hockey. Dallas is using him much like Chicago did on the 3rd line and 1st power play unit. Benn (7.8k) and Seguin (8k) are still the best duo in hockey.

I really like Eakin at 4.4k centering them, but he lost that job after their 6-3 loss to Colorado Saturday. Winning his job is Patrick Eaves (3.5k) and he presents the best value on the slate tonight. He’s regularly getting the 2nd or 3rd most ice time this season and his only drawback is that he plays on the 2nd powerplay line. He will be a staple in all of my cash games.

For GPPs, I will be using duos or trios of guys from the 1st power play line. Klingberg (4.4k) is their offensive defensemen, the only guy to sniff the 1st power play unit. I will have him with Benn and Seguin or Sharp and Spezza, and I prefer the latter combo. Spezza is 5.3k, so I can have the 1st line for 15.8k; they average 20.5 minutes on the ice. Or, I can have the 3rd line for 10.8k, they average 16.5 minutes on the ice. I’ll take the savings and expect Sharp and Spezza to be much lower owned than Benn and Seguin.

The New York Rangers have the next highest team total on the slate at 3. The Rangers really balance their ice time well. I like the top line of Brassard (4.9k), Zuccarello (4.8k), and Nash (6.8k). I don’t want to pay up for Nash since he doesn’t get enough ice time for me. The trio skates on the top power play unit.

I also like the 2nd line, getting almost as much ice time and skating on the 2nd power play unit: Hayes (4.2k), Kreider (5k), and Stepan (5.4k). I’ll look to the first line for cash games and this line for GPPs. On defense, give me McDonagh for 4.6k, and I like Yandle at 5.1k for GPPs.

The next teams on the list as far as team totals go are all really close and I have no preference of one over the other. The best plays are going to be the guys who get the most time on the ice, the most power play time, and have the cheapest price tag. Third place in team totals at 2.75 is the Los Angeles Kings, followed by Nashville, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Washington, Tampa Bay, St. Louis, San Jose, and Detroit. As long as you don’t take skaters from New Jersey, Vancouver, or Calgary, you should be fine.
