Galfond Challenge: Galfond Now Down Nearly €570,000
Phil Galfond and ‘VeniVidi1993‘ played another session of their ‘Galfond Challenge‘ match on Tuesday, and they battled for 741 hands at €100-€200 PLO on Run It Once Poker. At the end of the session, ‘VeniVidi1993’ finished up €15,647.36.
“It’s fun at times,” Galfond told Joe Stapleton after Tuesday’s session after Stapleton asked if Galfond was having fun. “I really do enjoy playing. I love the game, but of course it’s tough consistency losing. I wouldn’t say I’m having fun, but I’m enjoying playing, I guess.”
The latest win improved the overall lead to €569,164.31 for ‘VeniVidi1993,’ and Galfond has now lost at averages of €51,742.21 per session, €7,505.79 per 100 hands, and 37.53 big blinds per 100 hands. Galfond’s 25,000-hand match against ‘VeniVidi1993’ is now 7,583 hands complete. If these averages keep up, Galfond is on pace to lose more than €1.8 million to ‘VeniVidi1993.’
Tuesday’s session went similar to Monday’s, in that Galfond was getting beat much worse than where he finished the day. On Monday, Galfond was down more than €170,000 at some points, but he battled back to finish down just over €100,000. On Tuesday, Galfond was done more than €60,000 at some points, but he battled back to finish down just €15,647.36.
One of the interesting elements of the Galfond Challenge against ‘VeniVidi1993’ is that the players have the option to reset the stack sizes to original buy-in amounts of €20,000 each. According to Galfond, who was asked about the resetting of stacks after Tuesday’s session, the rule is that either player can request a stack reset when the stacks get to 200 big blinds deep.
“The technical rule is that when we’re 200 big blinds deep, either player can request and force a table change, but we don’t have to if nobody wants to,” Galfond said. “There have been some times when we’re 220 deep on one table and 150 on the other and if he says ‘do you want to break these tables?’ I just say ‘yeah, no problem’ because I am actually kind of indifferent to stack size anyways.”
Galfond said that so far it’s only been ‘VeniVidi1993’ requesting stacks to be reset and that he hasn’t requested one himself. He also added that there are additional rules in place “about everything” and that the rules are in place so one person isn’t being “unreasonable.” For breaks, there are rules for both for the amount of time for each break and the number of breaks allowed, for example.
