This month on the PocketFives Podcast, DailyVariance.com front man Tri Nguyen (pictured) brings us an inside look at his brand new book, “How I Made My First Million from Poker,” which features a foreword by Barry Greenstein. The book will hit DailyVariance.com in a couple of weeks on December 15th, has a list price of $117, and Ngueyn is offering it for $87.30. Nguyen covers an avalanche of topics in his new book, including rebounding from a downswing, avoiding tilt, and playing your “A” game. On the subject of increasing longevity, Nguyen told the PocketFives Podcast, “The key is to create a balance between poker and your regular life. I think sometimes when we get into the game because we love it so much and it’s our passion, and we end up playing too much, too long that we neglect what we did before we got into poker. Poker ends up consuming us.”

He added, “When you don’t have life outside of poker, it lowers your creativity. It makes you get sick of poker really quickly. When that happens, it lowers your motivation to log as many hands and it becomes this cycle where you are feeling bad because you’re not spending time with other people.” We have seen plenty of poker players suffer from burnout over the years, with several opting to retire from the game.

If you visit DailyVariance.com, you’ll notice that Nguyen has written a bevy of poker books. We asked him how he goes about crafting his creations: “There are different processes for each type of book. When writing a technical book, I usually will coach a set of students to see what weaknesses they are having at the current moment and whether those weaknesses are different from before. I want to figure out what the common mistakes each person has and then figure out how to solve the problem.”

“I would do market research on what people are talking about and what questions they have,” Nguyen narrated. “Then, I’ll set out to write my first manuscript. After my first manuscript, I would send it to my students to see what they think.” After a process that involves sending his book to a group of poker regulars and students, up to two years could have passed.

“How I Made My First Million from Poker” is available in paperback and e-book formats. It’s sort of a revamped version of Greenstein’s “Ace on the River” and Nguyen discussed where ideas for new book topics come from. “They come pretty easily to me,” he asserted. “I’m not too worried about finding a poker niche. I believe in research. I’m very statistical influence-based in that I do research to see what the common mistakes are. If I just fix those mistakes for people, they’re going to find the book to be very helpful.”

Finally, we’ve interviewed plenty of poker players for feature articles here on PocketFives. However, several of them have asked us not to publish strategic insights for fear of eroding their edge. Nguyen took the opposite approach, telling us, “I’m not worried too much about that. I’m pretty sure there are a lot of world-class players out there who are better than me. The reason that I talk a lot about strategy is because if I’m wrong, I want to be embarrassed that I’m wrong so next time I learn from it.”
