“I feel like I’m going to register for the $530 Monday PLO!” That was the response from Luke LFmagicFields (pictured) when asked how he felt about winning the Full Tilt Poker Sunday Brawl outright on April 7 for $40,000. The Brawl fell short of its $200,000 guarantee and Fields outlasted a field of nearly 1,000 players for the title. And then it was onto PLO.

“I have played quite a lot of PLO, both in MTTs and high-stakes cash games, and so regging up seems natural. I have had a really lazy last couple of months, so putting up some good numbers this week was just what I needed to get motivated to play again.” That was Fields still being excited about playing PLO. We think he likes it.

Okay, back to the Sunday Brawl. Fields told he late registered for the tournament after running well behind schedule for the day. He commented, “It was just one of those-stress-free MTTs. I doubled through a few times in the first couple of hours and then was fortunate to be up against a relatively soft field from about four tables out and managed to bring it home. I watched some of my session video today and I’m really happy with how I played at the final table.”

Five players in the Sunday Brawl took home five-figure paydays, among them Jason StatusUpLavallee (pictured) and Ryan ryanghall Hall. A total of 130 landed in the money.

Fields told us that he records all of his Sunday sessions: “I try to watch a full session from start to finish every couple of weeks, but I really like looking back at the victories and final tables. I’m super happy with my final table performances this past week, keeping in mind I have been out of the loop from grinding MTTs for the better part of three months.”

What has he been doing for the last three months, then? Traveling? Watching television? Fields remarked, “I really wanted to grind hard this year and was rewarded early in January with a nice score, soI let my foot off the gas a little and didn’t really get the motivation to grind againuntil the weekend before last. My deep run in the FTOPS got me back in grind mode, boosted my confidence, and put my MTT ambitions for the year right back at the front of my mind.”

In early April, he won the Full Tilt Two for Tuesday for $10,000 and is on the verge of breaking $1.5 million in tracked cashes in his PocketFives profile. In late 2011, he was once as high as #67 worldwide in the PocketFives Poker Player Rankings and can now be found at #701. He is tops in North East Lincolnshire, England.

At this point in the interview, we took a two-minute recess so Fields could register for the Big $162 and Monday PLO. He was polite about pausing our talk, saying, “Apologies for that. I don’t want to miss out!” And miss out he did not.

When our conversation resumed, we discussed whether it’s hard to switch gears from playing poker full-time to playing sparsely for three months and then restarting. Fields contended, “Switching on and off from poker has definitely gotten a lot easier with age and experience. I started playing at a really young age and used to find it hard to switch off at all mentally, but your ability and confidence grow with time and you realize you can switch off from it for a while and return.”

For the last three months, he has been focusing on spending time at the gym and with his girlfriend. He explained how he got started in poker: “I would spend hours messing around with a deck of cards. I’d always played card games with family and remember my grandfather taking out a copy of a book based on the TV show ‘Late Night Poker’ that broke down the rules of poker and even included bits of simple strategy. It was around this time that I remember first playing freerolls on a handful of old school sites.”
