Where does your online poker screen name come from? A movie? A random catchphrase? A television show? Your nickname growing up? For Scotland’s bobafett, “Star Wars” was the inspiration, as he had an obsession with the bounty hunter character Boba Fett. According to Entertainment Weekly, a spin-off movie featuring Fett’s character might even be in the works. Then, we can only imagine bobafett’s elation.

We’re not just gabbing about “Star Wars” with bobafett. Instead, we caught up with him to talk about his win in the 888 Poker Sunday Challenge last month for $22,000. He shared with us in an exclusive interview, “I’m really happy with it. I came in second in it in May and generally have a bunch of Sunday second place finishes, so it was good to finally get a win.”

The Sunday Challenge takes place weekly on 888 Poker. It’s a $90 buy-in tournament and bobafett called it “a good value.” He elaborated. “It starts a bit later than most of the other Sunday tournaments and, with the slow structure, it can mean I’m often one-tabling it in the middle stages at the end of a bad Sunday session. Until recently, I have min-cashed it a few times, but never really threatened to go deeper until May when I got second place for $14,000.”

We asked bobafett to describe his run through the Sunday Challenge. He said he took the tournament’s add-on immediately and promptly shed half of his stack during the first level after being the victim of a two-outer. He noted, “I grinded 15 big blinds for what felt like hours until we hit the money and, by then, managed to win a few pots and get up to around 30 big blinds with three tables left. By that point, I was two-tabling the Sunday Challenge and the PokerStars.fr Summer Special, so I was able to find more spots to chip up and take more notes on players for later.”

bobafett went into the final table of the Sunday Challenge in fourth place and busted a player immediately to shoot into second. However, an ill-timed bluff cost him most of his stack and he spent time just treading water.

“I ran pretty well heads-up and it didn’t last long,” he conveyed. “Every time he 3bet my opens, I had it, and when I didn’t have it, he folded anyway. He got down to around 15 big blinds and I knew he was going to start jamming on me fairly lightly. Luckily, I got A-Q when he jammed and held versus K-J for the win.” His reward was $22,000, the sixth largest score we have tracked for him.

bobafett mentioned that he was also in the running in the PokerStars.fr Summer Special, so we wanted to ask how soft the French-facing room is. “People say French sites are ridiculously soft,” bobafett told us. “A lot of the good non-Euros can’t play and that makes them automatically soft, but I don’t think it’s as soft as people claim. I have been playing on there for a few months and was on a pretty decent downswing without having any really good results. Thankfully, winning the Summer Special has more than gotten me out of that.”

His Summer Special victory was worth $27,000 and came on the same day as his 888 win.

bobafett got his start in poker after catching the game on television through shows like “Late Night Poker” and “Poker Million” eight years ago. He explained, “I thought it looked pretty interesting despite not knowing the rules at all. From there, I played play money sit and gos on Microgaming to learn basic strategy and when I felt confident enough, I ventured out to a Glasgow casino for the first time to play live in their weekly £10 rebuy. I loved the game, became a regular in their tournaments, and wanted to learn as much as possible. Although I dabbled with online poker, I really didn’t shift to being an online player until around 2008.”

And by the way, just about all of his online poker screen names pay homage to Boba Fett in some way, shape, or form. Talk about dedication!

He closed by sending a shout out to fellow Scot theVisionary (pictured) “for all the help he gave me when I was starting out.” He also wanted to single out “Keith for being an awesome backer and also Keys.”
