Earlier this month, Portugal’s skyboy(pictured) came away with an outright win in the PokerStars Sunday $100 Rebuy. There were over 1,000 entrants and his reward for beating all of them was $55,000. “It was a good MTT to win because rebuys are my best game,” he told us. In fact, his top three cashes dollar-wise are all in tournaments involving rebuys.

“I can build a big stack easier, and I am really good with a big stack,” skyboy said of his proficiency in rebuys. “Plus, you have a second chance in case you lose in the beginning.”

He won a $320 No Limit Hold’em Rebuy WCOOP Second Chance tournament for $64,000 in September and finished third in a $215 No Limit Hold’em Cubed SCOOP event last year for $61,000, his two largest online tournament scores to date. The Sunday $100 Rebuy is his third largest score ever.

I start with a double rebuy because I feel I have a really good edge deep,” he told us of his approach. “I like to gamble more in the beginning and always add on.”

Let’s get back to his SCOOP score last year for $61,000. Although he had been playing the game live for a decade, he said the cash was “more important because of morale. Doing well in big tournaments and special series makes you feel like you are on top of your game.” He passed $1 million in online MTT scores on November 3 and got a shiny new badge in his PocketFives profile as a result.

skyboy is one of 1,076 Portuguese PocketFivers with PLB scores (say that five times fast) and sits at #2 in the European country. Worldwide, he is perched at an all-time high of #82 and said, “There are a lot of good MTT players in Portugal and we are a small country. I think we could have even more high-stakes players as well. People are really competitive in Portugal.”

Portugal is #14 in the PocketFives Country Poker Rankingswith a combined PLB score of its top 20 players of 79,516 points. Several Portuguese PocketFivers have excelled recently in Sunday Majors, including faustideo, whom we interviewed following a final table in the Sunday Million for $58,000. Read the interview.

skyboy started playing poker with friends in university and majored in economics. He said he gravitated towards poker because the game gave him the ability to travel and work on his own terms, not for someone else. “And obviously money,” he added. Obviously.
