Anyone who has played poker knows that no matter how good you are, you have to expect to lose a hand every now and then. It’s just a fact of life. What none of us expect, though, is to lose a finger at the table. That’s exactly what happened to former baseball star Jose Canseco last Thursday, though. Yes, he lost a finger while playing poker.

While this might not be something most people would want to publicize, Canseco is not known for being a particularly private person. On Friday, he Tweeted, “Damn, I was playing in a poker tournament last night and something crazy happened to my finger that I shot off and they put back on.”

Oh, that’s right. He previously shot his own finger off. On October 28, he was cleaning his gun, which he obviously did not realize was loaded, when it accidentally discharged, blowing the middle finger on his left hand clean off. Doctors reattached the finger, but warned Canseco that he would likely never have full use of it again. Canseco Tweeted photos of his recovery, one of which is pictured above.

In an interview with “Inside Edition,” Canseco said, “At first I heard it go off and I actually grabbed the gun and put it on the table. Thought nothing had happened. Then I look at my hand and my finger’s blown off.” He said that if there were a bright side to the incident, it was that his fiancée, Laila Knight, was not hurt, although she was present at the time of the incident.

And now back to the extra ante in the pot.

Canseco reiterated what happened and added some glorious details, saying, “OK well I might as well tell you. I was playing in a poker tournament last night and my finger fell off. Someone took a video of it. My finger should have been amputated from the beginning. It was very loose with no bone to connect it. It was also smelling really bad. This guy called my agent and sold him the video of my finger falling off. It looks kinda funny. lol”

The lesson to be learned here is to bring plenty of sanitizing wipes when you play live poker.

The 50-year old Canseco was once one of the biggest starts in Major League Baseball. His heyday ran from 1985 through 1991 with the Oakland Athletics, where he was a core part of a dominant team that went to three consecutive World Series in the late 1990s, winning it all in 1989. He and teammate Mark McGwire were known as the “Bash Brothers” for their prodigious power, wowing fans with their towering home runs (pictured).

After his career was over, Canseco published a tell-all book called “Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big” in which he admitted to using steroids and helping teammates take steroids. He claimed that 85% of big leaguers used steroids. He was mocked for his accusations, but later investigations showed he was likely right, even if his 85% figure was a bit high.
