Mexico’s Luis Velador began Day 6 of the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event with 3,780,000 in chips, which was good enough to start the day in 19th place with 79 players remaining. He was the 2014 WSOP November Nine Bubble Boy, finishing in 10th place for $565,000.

Heading into the 2014 Main Event, Velador had almost $1.5 million in live poker tournament cashes according to the Global Poker Index, which placed him firmly in third place for Mexico poker players behind JC Alvarado ($2.2 million) and Angel Guillen ($1.7 million), while ahead of Jose Manuel Nadal ($600,000).

While Velador had never before finished higher than 392nd in the World Series of Poker Main Event, he owned two WSOP bracelets. The first was for winning a $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event in 2008 for over $570,000, while the second came for winning a $2,500 Pot Limit Hold’em / Pot Limit Omaha event in 2010 for over $260,000.

Late on Day 5 in the 2014 WSOP Main Event with the blinds at 20,000/40,000, Velador called an all-in bet from the small blind of 565,000 in chips from American poker player Chase Fredensburg, who was seated in the cutoff. When the cards were turned over, it was a pure race, with Fredensburg holding pocket nines to Velador’s As-Qs.

It seemed that Velador might leak some chips when the flop came out Jh-8s-6d; however, the turn of Kh added a few outs for Velador on the river. Velador filled up his nut straight with a Tc on the river, ending Fredensburg’s World Series of Poker Main Event dreams and soaring Velador to a 3.8 million-chip stack.

Velador started Day 6 in a pre-flop battle with Gabe Paul, with Velador holding Ad-Ks to Paul’s 9h-9s. Paul started the action by raising to 85,000, which Velador 3bet to 225,000. Paul then moved all-in for his remaining 850,000 and doubled up through Velador when the board of Th-6h-3h-8h-Qd gave Paul a flush and failed to improve Velador’s hand.
