It’s quite an accomplishment being a two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner. Many in our industry would say winning a WSOP bracelet is the highlight of a person’s poker career, and for Matt mattg1983Graham (pictured), a member of PocketFives from the get-go, capturing two WSOP titles is a reality. Last week, Graham branched out, so to speak, and took down the PocketFives $300 NBA freeroll on Profanity Sports, a daily fantasy sports site.

Graham bested a field of about 40 for the tournament, in which each participant picked a fantasy NBA lineup for one night only. For Graham, the opportunity to compete for free for a $500 prize pool meant the chance to play a new game. He told PocketFives in an exclusive interview, “I have very little experience with any type of fantasy sports, but figured the PocketFives promotion was a good chance to try it out.” Indeed.

Graham’s two gold bracelets came in 2008 and 2009, when he took down a $1,500 Limit Hold’em Shootout and a $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha event, respectively. Could we see a turn to fantasy sports in the future? When asked that very question, the successful poker player responded, “I do like sports stats, so I might get into it a little more in the future.”

The Profanity Sports freeroll was held last Wednesday. That night, the slate of games included Miami at Chicago, Utah at Phoenix, and the L.A. Lakers at New Orleans. Capitalizing on match-ups is one key to becoming a daily fantasy sports champion. “I tried to find players who were playing teams with bad defenses,” Graham revealed about his strategy for the night. “I then tried to find some cheaper players who were hot recently. Luckboxing an incredibly high score was pretty fun to watch.”

This author had a fantasy baseball draft on Saturday night, and the decisions I made in it will affect me for the entire season. In a daily fantasy league, participants quite literally select a brand new team every single day if they so choose. Graham thought the latter format is more up his alley: “I would definitely prefer daily fantasy sports. An entire season sounds like a big time commitment.”

Graham was once ranked as high as #8 on PocketFives, but Black Friday uprooted his poker career. He told PocketFives about his future plans: “I’ll play some live cash games, but will be figuring something else out long-term. I likely will be going back to college.” Before April 2011, he had built nearly $2 million in tracked online cashes and, according to the Hendon Mob, he has another $1.8 million in live winnings.

In states like New Jersey and Nevada, the push to legalize and regulate online poker could result in intrastate games coming later this year. But would those cause Graham to jump back into the poker fray? Or is he likely out of the industry for good? “It would be nice to be able to jump online and play casually, but it won’t really affect my life too much,” Graham said of U.S. regulation.

Another place he likely won’t be in the near future is the WSOP, which is set to kick off on May 27th from Las Vegas with the annual $500 Casino Employees No Limit Hold’em event. Graham commented, “The WSOP is kind of up in the air for me. I may be getting hooked up with a really good job, so if that works out, I probably won’t make it out this year.”
