The kickoff tournament of the 2013 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker, or WCOOP, occurred on Sunday. Nearly 12,000 players turned out for a $109 No Limit Hold’emtournament whose guarantee of $500,000 was more than doubled to $1.1 million. A heads-up deal ended matters and the top 1,530 players landed in the money.

The event’s winner, Russia’s WithoutNickk, started the final table in sixth place, but held strong and entered heads-up play against Germany’s herosnappinGdown 3:1 in chips. In the tournament’s final hand, WithoutNickk’s pocket fours overcame pocket sixes after a four hit on the flop and he banked $144,000. A second place consolation prize of $137,000 awaited herosnappinG. Despite a deal being made and $10,000 being on the line, the heads-up battle lasted over 200 hands.

Two of the first three WCOOP tournaments were still in progress as of the time of writing. Event #2, a $215 No Limit Hold’em Six-Max tournament, attracted over 6,600 players and will pony up a first place prize of $201,000. Also still carrying on was Event #3, a $215 No Limit Hold’em tournament, which attracted over 11,000 players and will ship $318,000 to its winner.

The WCOOP has been run every year since 2002 and distributed over $320 million in total prize money entering the 2013 edition. The series had nine events in its first year and will award 66 bracelets this time around. Fourteen players have earned over $1 million from WCOOP events and, for you mobile fans out there, 50 of this year’s 66 tournaments can be played on PokerStars’ Mobile app.
