Paul ‘147_star’ Williams nearly missed late registration for the Sunday Million after the time change

The Sunday Million waits for no man, ever, for any reason. For one poker player, forgetting to adjust his clock nearly cost him $64,000.

Two weeks ago, the PokerStars Sunday Million kicked off at 2:30 pm, just like it does every week. However, not among the field when it started was Paul ‘147_star’ Williams, who forgot the time changed the night before the tournament began.

“I almost didn’t enter,” Williams said. “I didn’t realize the clocks changed and it was about two hours into late registration when I opened the lobby. I toyed with the idea of just having a night off and getting to bed early, but I’m glad I didn’t.”

Glad indeed. Despite starting with a short stack, Williams managed to navigate his way to a fourth place finish and $64,000, his second largest online tournament score to date next to a win in the Sunday Million in 2010. There were 5,717 entrants this time around and Mustapha ‘lasagnaaammm’ Kanit managed to keep his hot streak alive and take down the Sunday Million for $177,000.

Part of not realizing the clocks changed might have had to do with Williams’ three-month-old newborn, Isabella, whose lack of sleep likely clouds her parents’ heads a little bit. He has also begun focusing on daily fantasy sports from his home in the UK, where DraftKings just opened for business.

“DraftKings started out as a byproduct of my friends and I starting an NBA fantasy league,” he said. “I got to know a lot more about the NBA and got more of an insight into the statistical side of it all. A few friends mentioned DraftKings, so I put a bit of money on there and gave it a go. I couldn’t believe it when the first team I created got first, first, first, and second. Since then, much like many poker players, I’ve been hooked and have been devoting some spare time to checking rosters and matchups and putting teams in.”

His schedule is stretched thin, yet he has still found time to develop a few go-to strategies on daily fantasy sports sites.

“I’ve been trying to avoid the swingy guys who have polarized performances,” Williams said. “Having a dud on your roster kills you, so I’ve been keeping out guys who are more vulnerable to lineup changes where possible. I’ve also been trying to pay close attention to injuries so I can get their replacements in for a cheap price. I’m in the beginning stages, but am definitely keen to learn more, and since I enjoy watching sports anyway, it’s nice to make it almost feel like research.”

Then there’s the baby. It’s Williams’ first and, as anyone who has kids will tell you, the first child turns a parent’s life upside down.

“Having a baby is great,” Williams said. “She is just under four months old and is really developing nicely. She is at the stage where she is absorbing everything and responding with a lot of smiles, so that’s great.”

His schedule has been in flux over the last three months, which likely contributed to his near-miss on PokerStars.

“For the first few weeks, I thought I could combine the nightly baby duties with grinding at poker, but I soon worked out that I couldn’t concentrate properly, so the wife has taken more than her fair share of duties while I’m grinding,” he said. “She is on maternity leave, but when she goes back, I will have to work out a more sensible schedule. For now, between us we’ve managed it well.”

The Williams’ new addition has him wanting to expand his house, which some of his Sunday Million winnings will go towards. Additionally, his daughter just began sleeping through the night, which will undoubtedly prove to be a boon to his poker mindset going forward.

“I’m dreading when my wife goes back to work,” he said. “She’s a teacher, so she gets a decent number of holidays, but babies wake up early and I’ve always grinded through the night. My in-laws are both retired, so hopefully on a Monday and maybe one other day they can have her so I can rest up. I also might have to start playing a full schedule on weekends, which I don’t do now.”

Williams is a few hundred dollars shy of $500,000 in career online tournament scores in addition to his spin and go results. And while the baby has a majority of his attention, and DFS is a potentially profitable hobby, poker is is still where he sees himself finding the most opportunity, both in terms of earnings and flexibility of schedule.

“I love poker and still have a passion for it,” Williams said. “I’m not really into NFL or MLB, so DraftKings is mainly going to be used for NBA and soccer, so that should be easy enough to work alongside each other. However, I played a lot in January when I realized that we couldn’t borrow any money for an extension and actually made myself cut back when I realized I was missing out on Isabella’s happiest and most active time in the mornings.”

Regardless of whether he misses out on a big opportunity like what nearly happened during late registration two weeks ago, his wife will be by his side. And she’s a coach of sorts.

“I think my recent success has a lot to do with a pep talk from my wife,” Williams said. “I tend to play in my study, but sometimes on Sundays I will play MTTs downstairs. A few weeks ago, she said to me, ‘Paul, I can tell you know when you’re making a bad call, so just don’t do it.’ I knew I made mistakes, but hearing that from my wife really hit home. It has made a huge difference to my mindset.”
