After reducing 2016 benefits for its VIP players, online poker site PokerStars promised that it would make up for the controversial decision by investing resources into avenues meant to attract more casual players to the site. Today, the iGaming behemoth has implemented one part of that plan by announcing a $1 million freeroll set to take place in less than two weeks.

Described by the company has one of the “richest online freeroll poker tournaments in PokerStars history,” the event plays out on March 19 and will award at least $20,000 to the first place finisher. To win an entry into the blockbuster tournament, players must first acquire a ticket into one of the 90-man Sit & Gos which start today and will run around the clock up into the day of the freeroll. The top nine finishers of each of those satellites will be awarded a seat in the event.

Players have two opportunities to earn a ticket into a qualifier: one by completing a ‘Challenge’, and another by making a qualifying deposit. In the first method, users must start by opening the ‘Challenges’ window inside the client and opt in to the freeroll. From there, they will need to play one real-money tournament, or just one real-money cash-game hand at any stake to release the ticket.

Players can also win their entry by simply making a minimum deposit of $20 using the bonus code ‘MILLION1’. The code can be used only once until 11 AM Eastern time on the day of the freeroll. Keep in mind that cashing out or transferring money to PokerStars’ sister site, Full Tilt, before making the required deposit will make users ineligible to receive a ticket.

Don’t wait too long to take a shot at a qualifier, as seats into the freeroll are limited to 100,000. Satellites will stop running once that number is met, or two hours before the event, whichever comes first. Depending on the total number of entries, up to half of the participants in the freeroll will win prizes.

The tournament is just one of four $1 million freerolls PokerStars plans to offer in 2016. Last year, the company announced a shift in its marketing strategy which puts more emphasis on bringing new players to the site rather than catering to high-volume grinders.

“We believe that these freerolls are further affirmation of our commitment to bring more excitement and recreational players to PokerStars, which is good for all players,” said company VP of Corporate Communications Eric Hollreiser in a blog post. “These changes are a critical component of our broad-based initiative to improve our online poker ecosystem by attracting more new players, improving the environment for recreational players and instituting loyalty programs that serve the majority of players.”
