PPA: Sheldon Adelson “Forgets He Owns a Casino”

14

On Wednesday, Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson (pictured) spoke at the G2E gaming industry conference held his home casino, the Venetian in Las Vegas. Adelson, as you may know, said he’ll spend “whatever it takes” to outlaw online gambling in the United States and has become public enemy #1 in our industry.

The
Poker Players Alliancefeatured a running commentary on Twitter during Adelson’s keynote speech, which you can watch by clicking here. The organization started off by noting, “Adelson takes a direct swing at @PokerStars, says they are criminals trying to get a US license.” PokerStars, which Amaya Gaming recently purchased along with Full Tilt Poker, appears close to launching in New Jersey and will perhaps do so as early as this month.

Adelson appeared to stick to his usual script, including, according to the PPA, saying that you “cannot know your customer on the internet.” The PPA retorted, “Hmmm, tell that to the US banking system.”

A motif from the PPA involved Adelson seemingly ignoring the fact that he owns brick-and-mortar casinos, three of them in the US: the Venetian and Palazzo in Las Vegas and Sands Bethlehem in Pennsylvania. At the same time, Adelson has been building his war chest courtesy of gamblers in Macau, yet at the same time is trying to undermine the expansion of online gaming. The PPA pointed out Adelson’s hypocrisy in back-to-back Tweets:

Other members of the poker community took to Twitter to voice their reaction to Adelson’s speech. Regarding the ability to determine a person’s age online, which Adelson does not believe is an easy endeavor, Online Poker Report’s Chris Grove noted that policing a person’s age can also be quite difficult live:

Also in attendance to watch Adelson was industry mainstay Nolan Dalla, who reported a less-than-memorable experience:

There’s no link between a rise in online gambling and a fall in live gambling, though. They tend to be symbiotic. Sheldon is ignoring the results of all of the studies that have been done.

    • Face it – What we have here is a very, very, very rich man, made rich by bringing gambling to people he perceived wanted it…trying to stop others from bringing gambling to people who want it in a slightly different method. And he’s prepared to spend “whatever it takes” to see his vision through. The hypocrite must be defeated.

    • Eventually some of you will figure out why it’s not advantageous to vote republican or libertarian. These people’s agenda’s are COMPLETELY different than your own. Koch brothers, Adelson, no difference. These people won’t stop at anything to get more, and more, and more, no matter what the expense is. It will never be enough.
