RANK & FILE: Five Former #1's Book WCOOP Wins, Holz Reigns Supreme
In the illustrious history of the PocketFives Rankings, 51 different players have managed to hold down the #1 spot. This edition of the RANK & FILE focuses on how those players did during the 2016 World Championship of Online Poker.
Not surprisingly, that group of players were pretty successful throughout the 82 events of the 2016 WCOOP, finishing with five titles, 270 cashes and almost $3,000,000 in winnings – and not quite of all it was won by Fedor Holz.
The first former #1 to pull off a WCOOP victory this year was ‘Eisenhower1’. The Swedish grinder beat out 834 players to win Event #6 ($215 Six Max No Limit Hold’em w/rebuys) and $72,339. Shaun Deeb won the $1,050 No Limit Five Card Draw Championship on the same day that his wife was giving birth to their second child while Patrick Leonard walked away with $162,054.98, the biggest score from the five winners, after winning Event ##65 ($700 Ultra Deep No Limit Hold’em).

Two former #1-ranked players tied for the most cashes of the group and to the surprise of nobody who has followed the rankings over the past two years, it was a Brazilian and Swede. Yuri Martins Dzivielevski, of Brazil, and ‘lena900’, of Sweden, each cashes 16 times throughout WCOOP. Right behind that duo were three players tied with 13 cashes each. Sweden’s Andreas Berggen and ‘C Darwin2’, who is currently ranked #3 in the world, tied with online poker’s most decorated tournament player ever, Chris Moorman.

Former #1-ranked playeds earned a total of $2,918,051.41 but almost 37% of that came from just one player, Fedor Holz. The 22-year-old German was unable to break through and capture a WCOOP title and only cashed three times, but after chopping the $102,000 buy-in Super High Roller event with ‘bencb789’ for $1,067,639.40, he outpaced every other former #1-ranked player in 2016 WCOOP earnings. In fact, Holz earned more than the next six highest earning players combined. Patrick Leonard earned the second most, coming in at $272,476.74 and was the only player to break the $200,000 mark.
