I suspect that I am like many online players....

I have played cash a lot over the years live with a few tourns thrown in. I have played online more sporadically, won a few k here and there for small stakes and see myself as a good tourney player. I also dont mind the odd sng or dble up.. I also quite like a few other games, Omaha hi lo, mixed games, its all fun....!

Therein lies some of the problems tho. Initially when I opened my recent stars account I played cash initially to get my feel for the site. Played a few k hands, won a few hundred blinds... easy stuff..

But then I started playing everything like I allude to above, tourns, sng's etc and bonus chasing. I was playing okay, running about level for a few months, recently for example there was one of the series events, 20 tournaments, low to middle buy ins and I fancied my chances of banking a nice payday in at least one of them.. 20 tourns later and having my KK cracked inside out and upside down in about 15 of them dwindled my ammunition badly..

I know this is swings, tourn swings are far worse than cash swings. I know this, so why am I not attacking them without a bigger roll? Why is my bankroll now less than 50 bucks when Im one of the better players in my niche? Why can't I get ahead? Why am I running to stand still all the time?

The professional mindset.. This is something I have to get a grip of because i believe that without it we can not achieve success. it is something i thought I had, yet online hindsite has shown that this isnt the case.

After losing 90% of my roll I stepped back from the game for a month or so. Firstly I didnt look at poker for a week or two, then I watched a little on tv, then I went back to reading a few good articles, pro's in the game, read their experiences and just listened, often just in the background subconsciously pulling out bits of information. At a certain point I felt the flow start to come mentally and I was grounded again. Now I could analyse my own game in the right frame of mind.

After going through Holdemmanger2 I broke things down into simple digestible sections. Where did I lose, what times did I lose, is there a pattern, what were my biggest losing hands, how did I play them? Which games gave me the most bb's? I didnt need to be drowning in information but some patterns did arise. I can see where I squander or win. For me I found that mixing up my games was detrimental. I found that shorter sessions up to 3hrs max were my best. I found that I should be winning at cashgames and that tourns really are far more of a lottery.

So for me now, the obvious way to play is to play my best game in my best structure at the right times and play that 90% of the time. That is the poker, everything else there is recreation.

That sounds obvious, it IS obvious but how many of us are actually doing it? I haven't stuck to one plan for a single month despite having the intelligence to understand that this is paramount to long term success. Distractions, outside influences, too many games all lead to less than the A game. My aim to play my A game 90% of the time, thats it. To go back to basics this month, for the entire month, that means I get to the end of the month playing only this game! no tourns, sng's, taking a shot, nada, just one single solitary month being disciplined. If I cannot do this, then I am going to stop pretending I am good enough to play poker as a serious supplementary income.

One month at the very bottom. I have a few bucks, I can top up but won't. Profits mean nothing in this exercise, profits take care of themselves if you play the A game against players that are not. There must be so many players not doing this f I was one myself. No stepping up in stakes even if my winrate is high. Im bottom of the ladder but this time I'm giving it the best footing.

I will post graphs every few k hands to help enforce that discipline.

Wish me luck

My tourney progress

I know most of you guys n girls are tourney players and some of you pretty useful too.

I will keep my own progress here, keeps me honest and I can take onboard any tactical advice to maximise my hourly rate online from some of you perhaps.. ?

After a lot of watching and dabbling in v small stakes Im finding my pace. I think this last 2 weeks has been as much about 'feel' you know? I like to ' play' as im from liive background and even online ive felt i've had to find that groove first.

I do fancy making a decent roi , 2 tables and upwards. one table sng's dont seem to give me enough room to play it feels.

I think I will stick to one or two table only at a time as oppose to mass tabling. Im capable of churning but its less enjoyable even if its tight between overall profits perhaps. Also I can clearly learn opponents play if focusing, what can i say, im old school. but perhaps others will enlighten me on the true value of a lower roi but more tables and points etc I wouldnt expect to earn more than a silver initially for a month or two.

My tourney play is tight, super aggressive, is there any other way? I play to final table for sure.

Heres my stats for first few dozen for starters...

VPIP PFR 3Bet WTSD% W$SD% Agg Agg%

14.26% 9.61% 5.25% 44.14% 64.06% 4.75 42.94%

So this is online poker...

things ive already learned.

leaks

Distractions... Must remove as many distractions as possible. Each session should be broken into legs and for each leg turn off your phone, tv, hide from the neighbours, lock out the dogs. Serious leakage, particularly after raising big pairs, getting the distraction... timing out.

MMT'S or Multi Multi Tabling... Okay so 24 tables avaiable on Stars I think, On my laptop I managed to run about 22 at one point, I ran about level but points are worth accumulating right? wronggggggg! Less tables is more A game, is more learning, is more opponent knowledge, is more long term profits and better game.

Finger Tilt... Ive just had to revert back to a mouse, the tap, tap, tapping for hrs has not only given me typist finger type pains but a particular finger, when it gets a bit tired, tends to foldaces and raise 57 off a lot... get comfy !

Game Selection.. I dont mean honing in with HUDS on individual players, I mean, with so much choice, so many games, you need to play to your stengths, if you arent 100% sure what these are, they are things that make you a profit, use a stats programme and dble check it agrees with you

Focus.. Really a combination of the above, the more A game you play the less chips you waste, the better your hourly rate.

Altho basic concepts, after a cple of weeks playing online I can already see each of those leaks creep in my own game occassionally. That would never happen in a live game so lets stay focused, get comfy, find your winning game, remove all distractions and dame su fichas

Poker Guiri

I've been living up a mountain in the Almeria desert for the last 5 years, the poker landscape has changed a lot since then!

I'm now back on Costa del Sol, an English Ex-pat, happily attached, cats, dogs, chickens and dwarf goats, I think owning the goats puts me clearly in the Spanglish category no?

I have been running MCS who are involved in medical cannabis associations but after decades in the business I want a new direction, so am throwing myself into poker a while, see if its viable fulltime tho in reality Im not sure I can take the grind fulltime nowadays. I used to grind 20nl for bugsys poker. A privately onwed poker site that used to do ok a few years back but has since closed down.

I love tournaments like many players do and have played a liittle online here and there tho nothing serious, (ive been 95% live over the last 15 years or so) but right now I dont have a suffiicient bankroll so will be playing micro cashgames a while to try work of any bonuses and grow my tiny investment.

Some synergies with growing there, from seedling to fully grown tree requires a lot of patience, skill and dedication after all :)

Seems there really isnt much local live poker around here anymore, every single place I knew b4 has been shut down since I was last in this area., Spains typically beligerent Franco-esque politicians fucking with anybody trying to grind, either in poker or life... apart from the big boys, of course, banks, casinos, you know it... :)

So I will try to organise some games at home, give me a shout if you are interested, I'm in the Estepona area. Nice countryside location, pool, close to the Med. If you are in, or thinking of visiting the area for poker or otherwise, give us a shout ;)

Hasta Pronto and good luck at the tables
