More than a feeling

i haven't been playing Poker for about 2 months.

Never thought i'd be able to do that. I have been doing a lot of sports betting and also started a new online venture and these things have been keeping me busy.

And of course i listened to the audiobook of The Alchemist. Again.

Now, before the grinders flame me rather ask why i did this. Because i didn't enjoy the game. It felt as if a played worse every HAND. I had to force myself to play.

Doesn't that happen in any profession? So, i took some time off. And i actually look forward to start playing again.

I have done that with businesses i've had. Sold them. Took a break. Started something new. When i had the energy and when the excitement was back.

No video's, books, forums, podcasts, magazine articles, website articles, tweets, newsletters. Nothing.

Today i, for the first time in a long time i listened to a podcast. Hell, i am even writing this blog!

And it's nice to be back.

So, my rules for playing again: family, good life, enjoy poker.

BE EXCITED!

Adapt or die.

Had him covered in chips (about 2-1), three left (2 ITM). Villain is BB and goes all-in and i call with AQo and so does SB (who also has about half my chip stack but slightly more than BB/villain). Villain shows 77. i flop top pair with my Ace and Q kicker. SB & i check and villain gets a set when a 7 falls...on the river. Half my stack is gone. Next hand i get KK and shove. BB (previous hand he was SB) folds (he has almost no chips left) and the villain (of the previous hand) calls with A3o. He flops an Ace and i am out. On the bubble. After leading in chips and *certain* to be in the money.

ONLINE SITES ARE FIXED! is i guess many's first response.

In hind-sight: i should have folded when the villain shoved with 77 as i was *almost* certain of being in the money and actually expected the SB to call. SB would have been crippled then (as BB got his 777) and i would have finished in the money.

So, adapt to the way people play and if one feels that sites are fixed, play accordingly.

Look at your opponents more than you look at your cards.

i am by no means a poker coach nor do i know everything about poker so don't quote me!

Thoughts and playlist

Too much poker makes me a dull boy so i thought i'd dot some thoughts down and show you what's on my playlist for the next hour. Burn after reading!

Playlist for the next hour or so:

Song for Zula - Phosphorescent

F_ckin' in the bushes - Oasis

The Funeral - Band of Horses

It's a long way to the top - AC/DC

The next 15 songs by Yeah Yeah Yeahs:

There i was. Sunday evening. All ready to play, good mood, looking forward to first game of the weekend - don't you worry there's been plenty sports betting this weekend and i am happy to say i am in the black - anyhow, all pumped up for Sunday night Poker. So i enter this STT and off we go - six of us with first two places paying. The guy to my left has been rather loose so i play tight in order to not get into a fight with him.

After the fourth blinds increase, the SB raises and i in BB re-raise with AQo to isolate him. This maniac (a crazy-loose player in my vocab) calls. Flop has no straight/flush possibilities and i get top pair Q with kicker A. SB goes all-in and i have him covered in chips so also go all-in. Maniac to my left calls and he is all-in with K10o with NO straight or flush draws. Turn is blank and the maniac rivers a K giving him top pair. My chip stack is cripled.

Now, i have read the books & forums telling me not to go on tilt. But all the advice means NOTHING to me at this point. So, i got up. i did not throw the laptop against the wall, neither did i throw the mouse. Hell, i didn't even curse. I got up and... decided to watch a movie. So, this post is not about the wrong play i made or how lucky the maniac got. Rather that i got myself to not crack but get up and relax watching a movie. And there, my Sunday evening is saved! i MIGHT even play another game later!

BTW, the movie is called "Saint John of Las Vegas".....

My alarm clock probably thinks I have anger-management issues.

In a fight, thou shall never kick another man in the balls.

I make some pretty incredible noises when people aren't around.

What's a burnt pizza, frozen beer & a pregnant girl have in common? In each scenario there was a **** who didn't take it out in time.

I always turn to the sports section first. The sports page records people's accomplishments; the front page has nothing but man's failures.

"Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one." – Bill Gates

Bored? Simply send a text message to a random number saying "I'm pregnant"

You know it's going to be a long day when you yell "seriously!!!" at your alarm clock.

No matter what life brings you, take a lesson from your dog… kick some grass over that shit and move on.

Hey Verification Code, I have no idea what the **** that says but I swear I'm human.

Incorrect Email or password… Well, which one is it, ****!

Hey hipster Starbucks (or Mc Donalds or KFC or whatever) employee, when i say "medium", you know what the f**k i mean!

Fate

"You can't change your fate."

WHY? Why not?

I know this might sound philosophical and all. So, if you are squeamish, stop reading now! Go try out a new recipe or a new game or go watch some sport on TV.

If you're still reading, welcome to my world!

All of us have ups-and-downs. Like the line on one of those fancy heart rate monitoring machines. Up and down she goes. That's a sign that i am alive. When that line goes flat, well, my heart ain't beating! So, up and down is the only way, not the best, but the only. We all LOVE roller-coaster rides!

Being a gambler, life has MANY ups and downs. i lost money this weekend with sports betting because i wager money on games where emotion was involved. Rule number one of sports betting: don't bet when emotions are involved. All rules in sports betting are number one rule, right?

I also loose money playing Poker. I also win money playing Poker. Previously (and still now and then) i'd go on tilt. Blaming the software, cursing the donkey. Anybody. Anything. Just-not-myself.

Then, i saw the light. Change your destiny.

I started studying Poker: STUDIED books, PARTICIPATED in forums (mostly just reading what others had to say), STUDIED some videos, TALKED about it with friends, hey, even to myself in the shower.

I stopped blaming others.

And the best that came out of all of this: i stress less. i have learnt to accept. Not fate. Circumstances.

So, that's how i challenge the fact that "YOU CAN'T CHANGE FATE" and the mere fact that i don't just accept fate, makes me feel better already.

It's not about studying poker, it's about doing something about it.

This is true for everything in life.

Ten dollars US

I deposited US $10 (their minimum deposit) at Bet365 Poker to have a go at the iPoker Dirty Dozen Jackpot. I know the odds of winning four in a row against eleven other players in the same game or in total fourty-four other players are against me. I know the rake is high at 20% of the $2 buy-in. i know many a loose player will try their luck. Yet, i want to do it! Any gambler likes a challenge. Any gambler wants the thrill. But i am not playing as a gambler. I am playing as a Poker player. i want to win ($2000+((4*$12.00)-(4*$2.40)) or $2038.40 which is a significant return on my investment of $9.60 !!

Let the games begin!

No need to blame Twitter...i honestly didn't have a life before that.

Just ripped off my shirt Superman style but instead of being jumped at with lust my wife just yelled for me to pick up the buttons.

If only my ceiling fan could carry my weight i would never be bored again!

If you don't like someone, just borrow them money and you'll never hear from them again!

Squirrels are just rat blow-drying their tails.

No grandma, i did not sniff a line of weed.

I don't quickly have a look at Twitter. I take a break from Twitter to quickly have a look at life!

Beware the depositor!

What is the goal of me playing Poker? To make money, to gamble, for fun and entertainment, just to do something else apart from daily routine? i think our goal sets the stage for how we play Poker: loose, tight, aggressive, passive, a combination. My point? Many players deposit a few bucks every week taken from their salaries/wages and play Poker as entertainment, like going to the movies. For fun. For some it is a living. Consider this when playing against the ones looking to be entertained.

If

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream -- and not make dreams your master;

If you can think -- and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two imposters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings -- nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run --

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And -- which is more -- you'll be a Man, my son!

- Rudyard Kipling

Ask yourself: What is the goal of me playing Poker? To make money, to gamble, for fun and entertainment, just to do something else apart from daily routine? i think our goal sets the stage for how we play Poker: loose, tight, aggressive, passive, a combination. WRONG TO GAMBLE?

Is it wrong to gamble or just to lose!

ON GAMBLERS

Daily Life: The life of a gambler comes with big highs and deep lows. One day a gambler will be as rich as an efreeti sultan, the next day he doesn't have a copper left to his name. Gamblers love the uncertainty of this lifestyle and appreciate life all the more when it is going their way. Every gambler adventures often enough because it is the fastest way to make large amounts of gold.

Notable Gamblers: "King" Felix Goldan, Male Human Gambler: has gained and lost ownership of a small kingdom over 60 times from betting.

Fortune, Female Tiefling Gambler: tricked a great wyrm red dragon out of his entire treasure hoard.

Gorruk Slytongue, Male Orc Gambler: bet against a demigod in a footrace with 10,000:1 odds and won the bet.

WHAT A STRANGE FEELING

I was watching the Real Madrid football match on Saturday evening and did not place a bet on Real Madrid. What an experience to watch a football game with friends without money wagered. Actually.....it was nice!

A long day

You know it's going to be a long day when you yell "seriously!!!" at your alarm clock.

i Play Poker

i'm off to meet with a (potential) client and wonder whether i should mention that i play Poker (and that i am in the black). Thing is: how do i substantiate my claim? Would they see Poker (and sports betting) as gamble with all the negative connotations? Or will they see it as somebody with analytical skills, being able to read people, read situations, taking calculated risks. So perhaps, they aren't ready for me. Yet.

PDA

I played cash games (NLHE $0.50-$1.00) today. I'm a total novice and soon realised to be patient, aggressive & most of all disciplined (PDA). Started with $77 and ended a 25min session on $244 and only played one table. The thing is, i wasn't nervous like usually the case with STT's or MTT's. Which brings me to the question: are cash game and STT or MTT players a different breed? Or can one be a successful player at both formats of the game? I do realise that i can lose it all in one session! i do think that with discipline one can get up from a cash game table when things are not going your way, there is always another game at another time. There is no pressure of blinds going up, antes increasing, etc. The downside is that at the low level that i played today, one will have to do some serious grinding to turn a good profit. Perhaps with STT's & MTT's you lose less than with cash games, with the latter the chance is always there that you can lose your whole BR if you don't quit before it's too late. I also think cash games are much more technical, with STT or MTT the psychology plays a bigger role.

Perhaps cash games are the games to play for all of us in the above-fourty-years-old club!

To read while grinding!

Money has no value

We've heard it before: i hate money - when it's new it cuts me, when it's old it stinks.

I noticed this elderly lady in the shops the other day comparing the prices if the different labels of pasta on offer. She then takes the least expensive brand and off she goes. For a moment i realised that i also sometimes compare prices and even save a Rand or so. Why is it then that i can wage R1000's and not care about what i am (potentially) spending?

i get so frustrated when feeding my bad habits (compulsive Black Jack plays, sports bets and even Poker plays) and end up losing only to realize i have no-one but myself to blame and that it's back to the grinding machine and start again - to make up for losses incurred with bad habits. I guess we all have those - it's in our nature.

So my point? Learning, with endless perseverance, persistance and will power to overcome these bad habits. i continuously remind myself that for every cent lost because of bad habits, i not only lose the hard-earned profits but most importantly waste so much time!
