January 2018 Results- "We Go Streaking"

The year started off great! Picked-up a win the 3rd day in and then another in the Nightly $33 around mid-month. Add on top of that a bunch of other good scores and by the middle of the month I had a few thousands in profit and was virtually guaranteed that I’d have a winning month.

And that’s where the problem occurred. I have a bad habit when I’m guaranteed a winning month like that to start to playing a bit looser than normal…not necessarily pre-flop but post-flop I’ll start floating too many hands or looking someone up on the river wider than I should. I guess in my mind I think “Not a big deal you can afford it”. The problem with that though is the strategy that got me to a winning month up to that point gets thrown out the window.

This doesn’t happen all the time but it definitely did in January. Add on top of that a case of the run-bads and all of the sudden what was going to be a great month only becomes ok. During this 2 week or so period I had one point where I failed to cash in 10 consecutive tournaments. If you follow my blog, you know that’s unheard of since I normally cash in the 45% range (some have asked how that is, especially since I make so many deep runs. I have a note to make that a topic for a future blog post).

In any case, I was fascinated by this streak of non-cashes and decided to look up my career history of streaks in Poker Dominator. Unfortunately, I purged all my results from PokerStars from back in the day so my database begins with the start of playing on Merge (April 17, 2012) but then includes all the WPN skins, Boavada, Ignition, regulated sites in NJ & NV, as well as Bet Online, Intertops and Global.

Here is a breakdown of my various tournament streaks…

Winning Days: 8 (August 20, 2015-August 27, 2015)
Losing Days: 18 (May 16, 2016-June 3, 2016)
Winning Months: 7 (July 2015-January 2016)
Losing Months: 5 (November 2012-March 2013)
Consecutive Tourney’s Cashed: 9 (February 14, 2015-February 17, 2015)
Consecutive Tourney’s without a Cash 23 (January 3 2013- January 6, 2013)
Consecutive Years in Profit 6 (2012-current)

Couple of take-away’s from this. The consecutive days winning and losing and the streaks of cashing or not cashing I have no recollection of at all. The 5 consecutive months of losing I do remember and it was the motivator to get a Pocket Fives subscription back when they were still a training site as well as doing tracking. It was through them that I found DrewPeacoq8 or as many of you know him today, @BetOnDrew and we started coaching and ultimately became close friends. Later, I would help lead him into a relationship with Jesus. The following year I had the privilege of officiating his wedding in both NC and PA (yeah he’s a wedding baller like that) and today we remain super close. So even in the midst of something that at the time seemed incredibly bad, this streak of losing months changed my poker career and ultimately John’s eternity.

I also vividly remember the streak of winning months. It started in July of 2015 right after my wife and I had gotten back from Costa Rica for 2 weeks celebrating our 20th anniversary. I contracted some sort of virus down there and when we returned I was sick in bed for a few weeks. The first Sunday of July I decided to play the Merge High Roller but was still so sick I didn’t have the energy for any other tables that day. I ended up taking 3rd for almost 9k and that was the start to my first 30k month. I would follow July up with a 6 more consecutive months of major scores. Other than November which was “only” 10.6k for the month all the other months were at least 17k+ and included my 2nd ever 30k+ month.

In total those 7 months yielded over 140k in cashes. Now for the “bad beat” part of this story. I couldn’t withdraw fast enough from Merge at the time since 2.5k checks were the only option and the cash-out times were extrenly slow. My roll on Merge kept growing and growing…it was way more than I’d ever want to keep online. Finally they started letting me do 5k withdraws and they sped things up. Then they switched to Bitcoin. Here comes the bad beat part…the last 40k or so was when Bitcoin was a hair under 1k. I immediately then withdrew it all to my bank. Had I held it, even with the recent drop in BTC, it would have grown to anywhere from 300k (at today’s price) all the way up to 800k had I cashed it out in December. Talk about a coulda shoulda woulda! Oh well, I did what I thought was wise at the time.

Ok let’s get going with the breakdown of January…

140…Tournaments Played
57….Cashes (40.7%)
14.…. Final Tables
6.......Top 3 Finishes
$6403.98 in total cashes (22.32% ROI)

Now onto my Merge up-date. For those not familiar with my blog, Merge stopped allowing Pocket Fives to track scores on September 5th 2016, so what I’m doing here is tracking where I would have been had they not stopped tracking. I do play some on other networks but Merge gets out 95% of my volume so I thought it would be fun and motivating to keep things going as if though it never stopped. I use Poker Dominator to track all tourney’s so these are the most accurate and up-to-date numbers as of the last day of the month.

Merge Lifetime Total: $478,147.03
Career Lifetime Total: $542,899.81
Career number of Cashes: 4280
