Line Check: Hot 11 Early Stages, Good Call or Bad Call?
  1. The hand history is below my comments: Would love some feedback and comments from you guys on how you would play it and why. It will help to read the hand history first as I left out some important details in the below comments.

I open the pot in UTG+2 a bit over 2.5x.

On an 8 high flop, going 3 ways, there is not much sense in betting. The range hits my opponents much more than mine and I don't want to bloat the pot anymore than it has to be, holding a hand that is good a fair percentage of the time. Being raised would be terrible. He bets slightly under half pot. Once the next player folds, I call.

The turn brings an offsuit Q. This card hits my range much more than his at this point. I check and he again bets just over half pot. At this point, I thought that he would continue with all of his semi bluffs (ie. spade draws with no pair) but would check back his one pair hands as it would be hard to be called twice on the turn and river with worse. He would even check raise some hands like 78ss on the flop to build a pot but would check that back on the turn. All in all, i thought his value range started to decrease significantly.

The river brought another off suit queen. This was very interest as his range will become very polarized if he bets this river. He shoved the river for just about pot which he wouldn't do if he had an 8 or some kind of two pair that got counterfeited. It is unlikely he has a hand like Q8 as he called preflop with many players left to act behind. I thought for a moment, I did block some reasonable bluffs he could have as I hold two 6's, but in the same thought, I dont hold a spade either. I made the call and he showed K9 of diamonds which seems pretty random but I guess that's an $11 tournament for you.

I'd appreciate any feedback for you guys.

  2. Line seems fine against a LAG, which I assume he was. Do you have any HUD stats?

  3. agree with above that i think we need some HUD stats and/or reads here to determine if this is a good call or not. Against and aggro player I think a call is ok, against a nit maybe not so much. I don't see him doing this with any hand that does not contain a Q, and of course it is a bit difficult for him to have a Q here.
