this time it was weird. Saturday i woke up with a cough. Nothing else. I was planning to be around a lot of people Saturday night so i got tested. Negative.

Still had cough tuesday prior to going into work. Got tested again. Negative.

Wednedsay morning woke up with all the other symptoms, mild fever, congestion and just feeling shitty. Tested again, positive.

Feeling decent today. Not anything liek last time where i lost appeetite, sense of taste/smell.

Just using this post as an example and not as a shot at you or anything but...

What's the point of testing at this point? These seem like absurd steps to take. You're sick with something - stay home. Why do we need to test whether or not it's Covid at this point?

Correct. They were saying just assume you have Omicron 2-3 weeks ago. Stay home. Don't bother testing if ill.

Test only to visit, fly  etc.

1st time it was just more intense. 102 fever, felt like complete shit for about 3 days, no energy, hardly ate. no taste/smell for about 2 weeks. congestion, coughing.

Well sounds like it’s a much easier go around.

Which is great.

cold viruses simply mutate too fast for vaccinations or prior infections to completely be effective in Eliminating symptoms.

but research has proven prior infection protects you better than vaccination.  Either way it’s good news

Not what I'm trying to say. I'm one of those guys that never missed school and never misses work.

But if you're afraid of spreading something or don't feel well, then fine - stay home. My point is - who cares if it's Covid, or a cold, or the flu?

Oh, it's just the flu - guess I'll head on out and party with my relatives!

Oh, it's Covid - better stay home!

That makes no sense.

it's the height of privilege to think people should just take off work anytime they have a cough.

It’s a shame that they can’t. It’s also a problem we could easily solve if we wanted to and it’s a sad reality that we don’t.

IDK how you solve this problem. It seems like a rather difficult problem to solve, tbh. There are so many jobs where calling in absolutely crushes the rest of a staff, either by being shorthanded or causing someone to come in when not scheduled. And then you're always going to have people that will call in sick when they're not sick or have minor symptoms of something.

So are we testing for something less severe than a common flu?

Which brings me back to my point - why are we testing?

It is possible. We live in a world where people drive others in their own car, deliver groceries/food/etc, and work odd jobs for strangers through phone apps.  The "essential" workforce could be supplemented by a variety of substitutes in a gig economy.  Anything similar to office work can be done remotely from home. Skilled labor would be difficult, so get used to delays for non-essential jobs or paying more for quickness.

Income inequality is real and growing. There is no reason the future shouldnt address this problem by empowering anyone willing to work (or not work when coughing).
