Hello :)
I'm not "confussed". And I think my peers would be fine with everything I've said here. There is nothing wrong with admitting that you've re-examined beliefs that you never bothered to question before. I simply adopted the beliefs I was taught growing up, for the most part, although there were some exceptions. I'm comfortable with where I am. But thanks for your input.

Hello :)
All interesting points. I think it goes back to what I was saying before about viewing things as black and white as opposed to being comfortable with the grey. We may not ever be able to tease out how much biology plays a role vs. what role the environment plays. You simply can't unlink the two.

We mostly agree. I'm more of the mindset that it's a combination of environment AND biology.

Ok. You're the scientist, not me. As a mental health professional, I can also say that being gay or transgender is not a mental illness. They may experience mental health issues, but i would attribute that to the rash of shit and lack of understanding and acceptance they receive. And that's the consensus on the matter. The more we understand about differences among human beings, the more we recognize that we've been completely shitty to people over things they can't help. Most of us do anyway. P-Luv is clearly an exception.

Hello :)
But there is actually science that supports that some people's biological sex doesn't match their gender identity. To my knowledge, there is zero scientific basis that says you're a 9-year-old Chinese girl. You're saying, essentially, "It's all in their head", but that isn't what the limited research on the subject says. Read some of the links I posted earlier in the thread. It literally says that studies have shown that people's brain who are transgender actually looks more like the brain of the gender they identify as, not the brain of their biological sex. Explain that.

And this was entirely my point. It's not completely black and white. It just isn't. There are many shades of grey in life.

ginwilly, do you know any people who are transgender' I do. Several. I have a very good friend who I've known for years who always felt that his gender identity didn't match his biological sex. He started transitioning last year. He is much more well-adjusted and happier than he was before. He finally feels like himself. Before, he felt trapped in his own body.

No fucking shit. Who said otherwise' I said that moral relativism is closer to reality than moral absolutism. I heard you intentionally burned your girlfriend's house down. How did you arrive at the conclusion that that was moral behavior' What reason did you use to tell you that was appropriate behavior' Pray tell. I don't think you have ANY right whatsoever to preach about moral absolutism. Seek help.

norm nôrm/Submit noun noun: the norm 1. something that is usual, typical, or standard. Yes, biological sex and gender alignment is the norm. Nobody said otherwise. ab·nor·mal ab'nôrm'l/Submit adjective deviating from what is normal or usual, typically in a way that is undesirable or worrying. If your biological sex and your gender identity do not align, you technically are deviating from what is normal or usual, but NOT IN A WAY THAT IS UNDESIRABLE OR WORRYING, which is the second part of that definition. Let people be who they are. How is someone who identifies as male when they're ...

Nobody fucking said that, though!! But moral absolutism DOES NOT EXIST. It is not reality. The reality is, within reason, people get to decide what they consider to be moral or ethical behavior. The key is WITHIN REASON. Do you even understand how shit works' At all' I mean, clearly, some things are pretty universal in terms of what's right and wrong, but even those things can be debated. Why is it not ok for a 25-year-old to have sex with a 17-year-old a week before their 18th birthday, by law, but on their 18th birthday, it's suddenly ok' Society decides those things. And a lot of it is ...

I understand the concepts of moral absolutism and moral relativism just fine, thank you. I happen to believe that morality is more relative. All anyone is asking is that if morality is absolute, please provide the absolute standard that we're all supposed to abide by. I have provided many examples of how morality is relative to individual circumstances, but you, nor Alchemist, have not provided the absolute standard that you seem to think exists. So, where is it' Why is this a hard question if morality is so black and white and ABSOLUTE. There should be an easy reference guide defining what ...

Yes, but that doesn't mean that there's something wrong or pathological about those who don't. Red heads make up less than 2% of the population. I was NEVER far right social conservative. Never. You are reinventing history. I was opposed to gun control and I was against abortion. I was more of a fiscal conservative if anything at all. People assumed that I believed certain things back then. I spent a lot of time arguing that I did not believe what I was being accused of believing. You couldn't be more inaccurate. Ask OneM. He knows me better than anyone on this site. He'll tell you I was absolutely NOT a far right social conservative.

Cisgender means that your gender expression matches your biological sex. See, you don't even know the definition of the term. Gender identity and sexuality are two different things. A transgender person can be attracted to members of the same gender or the opposite gender. Or both. Or neither. You are conflating two completely separate things. Gay people are absolutely normal. They aren't the norm, but they are not abnormal in the sense that you're using the word. There is nothing wrong with being gay. It may not be the majority, but it's not pathological. And I also wouldn't label you as ...

As i said, I haven't "gone from one extreme to another". I was never ultra super duper conservative in the first place. I labeled myself a conservative Republican, but I think that was an inaccurate label. I had a lot of beliefs that weren't typically conservative. I even said that back then. My conservative friends and family used to accuse me of being liberal. That goes back at least 20 years. I just finally owned who I really am.

No, it wasn't just memorizing facts. Far from it. It was taking information that was presented, analyzing it, and drawing conclusions from it. There was actually very little fact memorization involved. I probably took like 3 quizzes in three years. Most of it was writing papers (where they wanted to see my own ideas) and assessing cases. I didn't decide to become "left wing". I educated myself about facts, and as a result of that, I realized that some of my beliefs were ill-informed and not based in facts or reality. I never said I was a liberal, did I' Did I use that terminology anywhere ...

You aren't paying attention. I said I haven't changed my beliefs all that much. I changed a couple beliefs slightly. I was staunchly pro-life, for example, but when I looked at the facts, and considered it from all angles, I realized that it makes way more sense to not try to legislate what a woman does with her body. She should determine that along with her doctor. Would I personally have an abortion' No. But can I see where it's wrong for me to say another woman can't make that decision if it's best for her and her family' Yes. Another example is marriage equality. I never was opposed to ...

Hello :)
So, where exactly do we disagree' I'm saying basically what you quoted, just using different words. "An action can be moral, amoral, or immoral depending on the circumstance (i.e. killing)". Morality, right and wrong, is circumstantial. Use whatever word you'd like. It's not black and white. If I believe sex outside marriage is morally wrong, then I try not to do it. If I do, my conscience bothers me. If you think it's ok, then you probably don't feel guilty if you do it and it isn't an issue for you. So, who decides what is moral or immoral' She's not my friend, she's my client, and for her, ...

Please do not tell me I don't understand the "other" side, that is a laugh. I grew up in right-wing conservatism my entire life. Steeped in it. Surrounded by it. So you are a climate change denier as well' It's not a stupid request. If morality is objective, and not circumstantial, subjective and relative, then you should be able to list all the behaviors that are objectively immoral, no' Why is that stupid' You seem to be in the know about what's immoral and what's not. If my client believes that having oral sex with her husband is morally wrong, who's to say she's incorrect' She believes it's immoral and chooses not to do it.
