  1. The second 'Galfond Challenge' is complete and once again Phil Galfond is the winner. On Tuesday, Galfond finished his challenge against Ioannis 'ActionFreak' Kontonatsios, winning approximately €115,000 from play and a €150,000 side bet. Although Galfond lost the final session by about €123,000, it wasn't enough to overcome the lead Galfond had. Entering the final session, Galfond was up nearly €240,000. 'ActionFreak' gave it a good run on the final day but it ultimately wasn't enough. Galfond and 'ActionFreak' played 15,000 hands of €150-300 PLO. With the result, 'ActionFreak' lost a combined €265,000 to Galfond. The victory was the second Galfond Challenge match win for Galfond. He had previously defeated 'VeniVidi1993' in an epic comeback that resulted in Galfond winning €101,671.58 from 'VeniVidi1993.' Through the two complete Galfond Challenge matches, Galfond is up a total of €366,000. Galfond also has an ongoing match against Bill Perkins that is just more than 1,000 hands complete. In that competition, Galfond is up more than $90,000. [ptable zone="Global Poker Article Ad"][ptable zone="GG Poker"][ptable zone="Party Poker NJ"] The challenge against 'ActionFreak' played out a bit different than the one against 'VeniVidi1993.' Against 'VeniVidi1993,' Galfond was getting crushed through the first 15 sessions and it even appeared that Galfond might forfeit the match and move on. After taking an extended break, Galfond returned to battle with 'VeniVidi1993' and mounted a comeback for the ages to win that Galfond Challenge match. Against 'ActionFreak,' Galfond held the overall lead virtually from start to finish. Of the 16 sessions that were played, Galfond was only behind overall following the first two sessions. Following a win of more than €310,000 in the third session and more than €113,000 in the fourth session, Galfond never looked back. Through 10,000 hands, Galfond was up six figures. Galfond then won €165,000 and €179,000 on back-to-back days of May 21 and May 22, which pushed his lead to more than €450,000 overall. From there, Galfond held on to the finish. In the final session, 'ActionFreak' did what he could to battle back but the hole he was in proved too deep to climb out of. One aspect that likely helped Galfond maintain his lead was a feature that was added to the challenge later on. Galfond and 'ActionFreak' were aware that partypoker, where they were playing the challenge, was going to be implementing a feature that all all-in pots would be run twice in games in private rooms. The Galfond Challenge between the two was being played in a private room on partypoker. Eventually, the two had to run all of the all-in pots twice. If 'ActionFreak' was looking to gamble more and increase the variance to try and cut his deficit, a variance-reducing feature such as running it twice wouldn't be in his favor. As mentioned, Galfond has a challenge against Perkins that has already started, so he'll be able to resume that whenever the two are able. Sessions between Galfond and Perkins have been more sporadic but will likely pick up now that Galfond's battle against 'ActionFreak' is done. Galfond could also start playing one of his other challenges as well, such as the one against Chance Kornuth.
  2. The first 'Galfond Challenge' was fascinating theatre between Phil Galfond and 'VeniVidi1993,' and it ended with Galfond completing one of poker's most incredible comebacks. In this article, PocketFives is going to take a look at the five largest pots that took place between Galfond and 'VeniVidi1993.' Chopped pots were thrown out, though. As much as James Hartigan and Joe Stapleton want to drive home that "everyone loves a chopped pot," it's more fun to see the chips pushed one way or the other. Here are the five largest pots between Galfond and 'VeniVidi1993' that were played during their battle of €100-200 PLO on Run It Once Poker. 4. Phil Galfond has done it. Once down more than €900,000, Galfond stormed back to complete a comeback for the ages to win the ‘Galfond Challenge’ against ‘VeniVidi1993.’ Finishing in the black across the 25,000-hand match of €100-200 PLO on Run It Once Poker allowed Galfond to scoop the €100,000 side bet that ‘VeniVidi1993’ put up (Galfond was risking €200,000). The Galfond Challenge between Galfond and ‘VeniVidi1993’ lasted 39 sessions and the sessions averaged 641 hands. The first session took place back on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, and the final session to wrap it all up took place on Sunday, April 12. The final session was a must-see affair, with more than 25,000 viewers tuning in on Twitch and countless others sweating the details on social media. Entering the final session, 'VeniVidi1993' was up just €8,171. At the stakes they were playing, the match was virtually tied at this point. It stayed pretty close throughout the final session and eventually came down to the wire. [ptable zone="Global Poker Article Ad"][ptable zone="GG Poker"][ptable zone="Party Poker NJ"] Tense Final Session Decides It All After 38 sessions, Galfond and ‘VeniVidi1993’ were pretty much tied, with ‘VeniVidi1993’ clinging to an €8,171.67 lead. Entering the final 39th session, the duo had 698 hands left to play out. ‘VeniVidi1993’ started off the final session with the lead and he held that lead for the first 75 hands or so before Galfond worked his way into the lead. The first lead for ‘VeniVidi1993’ reached its high point about halfway through those 75 hands before Galfond started to turn things around in his favor. Helping Galfond to turn it around was the follow €39,999 pot that Galfond won with a full house. With €7,999 in the middle on the [poker card="Qc"][poker card="8d"][poker card="5c"][poker card="Jh"] board, ‘VeniVidi1993’ bet €3,999.50. Galfond called and the river was the Jd. ‘VeniVidi1993’ fired a pot-sized bet to put Galfond all in. Galfond called off his last €12,000.50. Galfond showed the [poker card="Kc"][poker card="Jc"][poker card="7c"][poker card="5d"] for a full house, jacks over fives, to beat the [poker card="Ad"][poker card="Kd"][poker card="Tc"][poker card="9d"] that ‘VeniVidi1993’ held for a straight. Galfond moved into the lead over the next few hundred hands of the session, juggling between having the session lead and the overall lead. He couldn’t quite pull away, though, and eventually ‘VeniVidi1993’ fought back retake the lead. Just before Galfond and ‘VeniVidi1993’ passed 400 hands on the session, ‘VeniVidi1993’retook the overall lead. He was still down on the session, though, but that also changed in his favor shortly after the two passed the 400-hand mark. After ‘VeniVidi1993’ was up again both overall and on the session, time was working against Galfond as ‘VeniVidi1993’ kept the pressure on. At around the 450-hand mark, the two paused play to see where the numbers stood. At this break, ’VeniVidi1993’ was up and was approaching the point where he could mathematically win by folding out. He wasn’t quit there yet and the two returned to play with the entire Galfond Challenge hanging in the balance on every single hand. Looking like he might be out of it, Galfond fought hard. Much of the final session was played much closer to the vest by both players, but ’VeniVidi1993’ really cranked up the defense with the finish line near, looking like Floyd Mayweather in the final round of a title fight. ‘VeniVidi1993’ couldn’t quite dodge the jabs Galfond was landing in the comeback within the comeback as the match went down to the wire. Then, the following hand came up that delivered the final blow and locking up the win for Galfond. With €7,194 in the middle on the [poker card="Jd"][poker card="9d"][poker card="4c"][poker card="4d"][poker card="Ts"] board, ‘VeniVidi1993’ checked and Galfond fired a pot-sized bet. ‘VeniVidi1993’ went into the tank and emerged with a call. Galfond’s full boat was bigger and he was pushed the pot. Later on, ‘VeniVidi1993’ picked off a Galfond bluff with a set of aces to haul in a €21,809.94 pot. There was €7,269.98 in the pot on the final board of [poker card="Qs"][poker card="6c"][poker card="5d"][poker card="Ad"][poker card="4h"]. ‘VeniVidi1993’ checked and Galfond bet the full pot. ‘VeniVidi1993’ made the call. ‘VeniVidi1993’ had the [poker card="Ac"][poker card="Ah"][poker card="Kd"][poker card="8c"] to beat the [poker card="Jc"][poker card="Ts"][poker card="4s"][poker card="3h"] of Galfond and he won the pot. On Thursday, Galfond won €85,271.31 off ‘VeniVidi1993.’ He came into this latest session down €318,895.43, and the €85,271.31 win now puts him down €233,624.12 overall. 15. The ‘Galfond Challenge’ continued on Saturday, March 21, and the latest session ended with something we haven’t yet witnessed in the battle between Phil Galfond and ‘VeniVidi1993.’ Galfond had been cruising along in the session and up around €100,000 when he stacked ‘VeniVidi1993’ in two pots in quick succession. The result was an abrupt ending of the session by ‘VeniVidi1993,’ or as the saying goes, 'VeniVidi1993' "rage quit" Galfond. Galfond finished up €140,979.28 on the day. Galfond and ‘VeniVidi1993’ played another 503 hands of their 25,000-hand match. They're battling at €100-200 PLO on Run It Once Poker and buy-ins are €20,000. That means Galfond finished up more than seven buy-ins on Saturday. After Saturday’s batch of hands, the two are now 17,551 hands through their challenge, or just over 70% complete. They have another 7,449 hands to go and Galfond has cut his deficit down to €318,895.43. [ptable zone="Global Poker Article Ad"][ptable zone="GG Poker"][ptable zone="Party Poker NJ"] At the time of the break from the challenge that Galfond took, Galfond was down more than €900,000. This was a deficit of more than 45 buy-ins, and Galfond was losing at a rate of €5,129.28 and 25.65 big blinds per 100 hands. Since returning from the break, Galfond has own back €581,344.74. In just the sessions since returning from the break, Galfond is up 29.07 buy-ins and winning at a rate of €3,312.32 and 16.56 big blinds per 100 hands. If the current post-break pace continues over the final 7,449 hands of this Galfond Challenge, Galfond would win back nearly €250,000 more and be just about even when it’s all said and done. Now, let’s not forget that there is big side-action bets on both sides, with Galfond risking €200,000 to the €100,000 of ‘VeniVidi1993.’ The latest session was one that saw Galfond in the lead for virtually the entire time, and the first hand we’ll look at involved Galfond’s aces holding up in a €39,999 pot. Preflop, Galfond started the action with a raise to €600. ‘VeniVidi1993’ fired back with a three-bet to €1,800, but Galfond wasn’t done there and he four-bet to €5,400. ‘VeniVidi1993’ called and the [poker card="Qh"][poker card="Ts"][poker card="2h"] came out on the flop. ‘VeniVidi1993’ checked and Galfond bet €10,799, which was the full pot. ‘VeniVidi1993’ went all in for €14,600 and Galfond called. Galfond had the [poker card="Ac"][poker card="Ah"][poker card="5h"][poker card="3d"] and ‘VeniVidi1993’ had the [poker card="As"][poker card="Jh"][poker card="Th"][poker card="5s"]. The turn was the [poker card="8d"] and the river was the [poker card="2d"], giving Galfond the victory on this hand. This next pot was worth €50,386.02 and it was also shipped to Galfond. On the final board of [poker card="8s"][poker card="8c"][poker card="7c"][poker card="5h"][poker card="6s"], there was €16,795.34 in the middle and ‘VeniVidi1993’ checked to Galfond. Galfond fired a pot-sized bet and ‘VeniVidi1993’ made the call. Although Galfond had bet nearly his entire stack on the river, it wasn’t an all-in pot, so we only got to see Galfond’s holding. He had the [poker card="Jd"][poker card="Td"][poker card="9c"][poker card="4d"] for a ten-high straight and ‘VeniVidi1993’ mucked his hand. It’s worth mentioning that on the other table, ‘VeniVidi1993’ did win a decent pot of his own, so the loss from the other table wasn’t that bad. On the other table, ‘VeniVidi1993’ fired a pot-sized bet of €14,997.50 on the [poker card="Tc"][poker card="8h"][poker card="7s"][poker card="4s"][poker card="As"] board and Galfond folded. The third clip we’ll highlight is the following €39,999 one that went Galfond’s way. ‘VeniVidi1993’ led with a €1,200 bet on the [poker card="Qd"][poker card="Jh"][poker card="8d"] flop into a pot of €3,599. Galfond raised to €3,600 and ‘VeniVidi1993’ came back with a reraise to €14,399. Galfond went all in for €18,200 and ‘VeniVidi1993’ made the call. Galfond had the [poker card="Ac"][poker card="Td"][poker card="9d"][poker card="2h"] for a flopped straight. ‘VeniVidi1993’ had the [poker card="Kd"][poker card="Qc"][poker card="9c"][poker card="5d"] for top pair and a draw. The turn was the [poker card="9s"] to give ‘VeniVidi1993’ outs to a full house, but the [poker card="4s"] on the river secured the pot for Galfond. Lastly, the following €49,078.24 pot was one of the hands that prompted ‘VeniVidi1993’ to end the session earlier than planned. With €10,797 in the middle on the [poker card="Th"][poker card="6c"][poker card="4h"][poker card="4d"] board, ‘VeniVidi1993’ bet €3,200 and Galfond called to see the [poker card="Kc"] hit the river. ‘VeniVidi1993’ shoved all in for €15,940.62 and Galfond quickly made the call. ‘VeniVidi1993’ had the [poker card="8d"][poker card="7h"][poker card="6s"][poker card="5h"] for two pair, but his hand was no good against the [poker card="As"][poker card="Kh"][poker card="Ks"][poker card="Ts"] for Galfond, who had rivered a full house.
