  1. PocketFives had to opportunity to catch up with New Jersey poker pro Daniel wildman75Buzgon (pictured, image courtesy of Borgata), who recently won Event #15, a $1,000,000 guarantee, of the Borgata Winter Open for a cool $194,509. Buzgon outlasted a field of 2,882 runners to capture his first live tournament win. He has over $2 million in recorded online cashes and over $1 million in live cashes to date. Some of his notable online accomplishments include a win in the 888 PokerBig Sunday $10,000 Guarantee for $3,000, a fifth place finish in the FTOPS XIX Main Event in February 2011 for $321,400, and a runner-up performance in a PokerStarsWCOOP event in September 2007 for $99,115. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: Congrats on your win in the Borgata Winter Poker Open. Tell us how you are feeling and what this win means to you. Daniel Buzgon: Thank you. The emotional high from winning this tournament has pretty much worn off by now and I am starting to get back to reality. This win means a lot to me since it was my first win in a live tournament. I have had a few close calls in smaller tournaments in the last few months and not winning one definitely starts to get frustrating. It shouldn't, but it does. Most of us are extremely competitive in the poker world and I am no exception. Winning this one kind of takes that weight off my shoulders. I also feel extremely fortunate. I will probably never run or get starting hands like that in a tournament for a very long time. After the first hand on Day 2, I was left with seven big blinds. On the money bubble, I had seven big blinds. And at the final table, I spent way too many hands under 10 big blinds for my liking. After the money bubble, the average stack in this tournament probably never exceeded 25 big blinds. So, I definitely needed a little bit more luck in surviving this field then others. But I'll take it! PocketFives: Do any hands from this tournament win stick out? Daniel Buzgon: There are a couple of key hands that definitely stick out in my mind from this tournament. The first one happened when we were on the exact bubble of this tournament early on Day 2. I was severely short-stacked and was fortunate enough to look down at AA. I got called by two other players who were holding KK and JJ. An ace on the turn would lock up the hand for me and send me out of the danger zone with over 20 big blinds. Another hand that sticks out in my mind occurred when we were three-handed. I was the short stack with around 20 big blinds and opened on the button with A3 offsuit. The small blind folded and the big blind called. The flop came 832 with two diamonds. Before I could decide how I was going to play my hand, the big blind led out into me, which definitely took me by surprise. From what I could remember, I had not seen him do this before and was not quite sure what to make of it. There are just so few value hands he should have on this board. I thought there was a chance he could be light because of the huge money jump from third to second, but also did not think he would want to jeopardize his chip lead by running a big bluff. I am not sure I have any other option than to just call at this point, but was not thrilled about it because he probably will keep applying pressure and there are a lot of bad turn cards for my hand if I have the best hand. The turn came an offsuit 6 and he bet again. This card helps his most likely semi-bluffs of 54, 65, and 64, but for some reason I just did not believe him yet. The river came another 6, with the flopped flush draw missing. He took a few seconds and bet enough to put me all-in. I tanked for a long time trying to figure what he could possibly have and if he was really willing to risk most of his chips in this spot with nothing. I remember saying out loud that the old me would never fold in this spot. Like a lot of people, I like to sleep well at night, know what my opponents have in these spots, and call a lot more than I probably should. Eventually, I folded and decided he was not bluffing enough in this spot to justify making the call. This fold would save my tournament because while watching the replay of the live stream, I learned that he had A8 and had me in bad shape the entire way. Maybe it should have been an easier fold on the turn or river, but I am just glad I eventually made it on the river. PocketFives: Do you have any plans for the money? Daniel Buzgon: I do not really have any plans for the money, but that's because I did not get to keep the majority of it. I had been backed for tournaments since February 2010. It was always nice to have that security blanket of knowing you couldn't lose your own money if things went bad for an extended period of time. And giving away part of the profits when things went well was a price that I was willing to take. Fortunately, I was able to take away enough money from this score that I thought it was in my best interest to go back on my own. I try to focus more of my time on online cash games over tournaments these days, so being backed for tournaments did not make as much sense for me now as it did in the past. This score might not give me as much money as I would have liked, but it will give me some of the freedom back to play when and what I want that I have not really experienced in a very long time. Every backed player knows that feeling of being buried in make-up and not knowing how long, if ever, it will take them to get out. It sucks. Plain and simple. Just know with a lot of hard work and a little (or a lot) of luck you can get out. PocketFives: Give us your thoughts and experiences of regulated online poker in New Jersey. Daniel Buzgon: As much as I complain about the current state of online poker in New Jersey, I know how fortunate I am to live in a state where it is "legal." I love being able to play online from the comfort of my own home and not have to move out of the country like so many of my friends have chosen to do. But, it's almost like the current sites in New Jersey don't know what they are doing or don't care. I know these sites have to go through the Division of Gaming Enforcement, where it is no easy process to change the smallest of things. The people running some of these sites just don't know poker. And it's very apparent in the way their sites operate. They employ professional poker players, yet hardly listen to what they have to say. I know it's going to take a while to fix all the bugs, but I feel like they are not doing nearly enough in the meantime. Everyone is anticipating the arrival of PokerStars into the market. This is both exciting and scary. Many assume they will show up and on Day 1 and all the players will jump ship to play on their software. They have the capital and marketing budget to make these other sites obsolete. I truly hope this doesn't happen because we need competition in this market. This is why I can't understand why the other sites are not doing everything in their powers to keep their regulars and recreational players as happy and as loyal as possible before PokerStars gets here. I hope the other sites start to shape up before it's too late. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play on and why? Daniel Buzgon: I like how 888 has tournament buy-ins that cater to everyone. Having three different tournaments with buy-ins of $100 or more on Sunday is great. Borgata has finally come around to this and added a few bigger buy-in Turbos, which I enjoy playing. I think all the sites have a decent Sunday tournament schedule, but could definitely be improved. I am excited to see what PokerStars has to offer for us on Sundays if and when they show up to the party. PocketFives: How did you get started in poker originally? Why was it appealing? Daniel Buzgon: I got started in poker way back in 2003 during the Chris Moneymaker boom. We started playing small cash games and tournaments in my friend's basement. A few months later, I started to get hooked while playing in the dorms at Arizona State University. That's where I would fine online poker and start taking the game somewhat seriously. The money was the most appealing part by far. I was working at a golf course making $6 per hour as part of an internship. Having the opportunity to make a couple hundred dollars in a night seemed like a much better alternative even if I lost most of the time. After graduating, poker became a full-time thing. PocketFives: What do you do away from poker? What else interests you? Daniel Buzgon: My main hobby outside of poker is golf. If I weren't playing poker, I would be working in the golf business in some capacity. I also enjoy watching and playing soccer. I am a big Liverpool supporter. I also enjoy cooking or at least trying to cook.

  5. [caption width="650"] David 'dehhhhh' Coleman has done well both in live and online tournaments in June.[/caption] The poker action has shifted west over the last few weeks for many of New Jersey’s top online players. Quite a few of them have come to Las Vegas to put their live skills to the test but the action has still been profitable for a few back home. For the third straight month, David ‘dehhhhh’ Coleman is #1 in the New Jersey Online Poker Rankings. Coleman’s June included 11 victories across New Jersey’s online sites. He also has cashed three times in the World Series of Poker with a payday earned in the $3,333 High Roller event played on WSOP.com. In the last week alone, Coleman has cashed for $21,000 in World Series of Poker events. Up one spot from third to second is Yong ‘ykwon17’ Kwon, who earned 12 victories in June. Kwon’s wins were highly profitable as he won two PokerStars Sunday Specials with the each victory worth over $10,000 apiece. Rounding out the top-three is Mike ‘Lav519’ Lavenburg. Lavenburg made seven total trips to the winner’s circle along with 10 additional podium finishes. Back in for another month in fourth place is Daniel ‘centrfieldr’ Lupo. The former NJ #1 picked up three victories with his largest score coming as a fourth place finish in the PartyPokerNJ $215 buy in $40,000 guaranteed RE + Bonus. Lupo earned $3,600 in that event. There are three newcomers to the Poker Rankings this month with Josh ‘thejberg’ Rothberg and John ‘Selurznug’ Cosgrove coming in at fifth and eighth, respectively. Rothberg won four NJ tournaments in June while Cosgrove took down 10 of his own. Dan ‘wildman75’ Buzgon and Jeremy ‘Jermz’ Danger each fell one spot and are now sixth and seventh. Buzgon has spent the month playing live in Las Vegas and has three cashes so far this summer. Danger took down 11 titles in June. Falling two spots from seventh to ninth is Craig ‘craigruby’ Rubinstein, who made four top-three finishes. Coming in at #10 is the final newcomer to the rankings, Matt ‘papamat25’ Iles, just edging out Sri ‘sri100k’ Sangannagari. 6. [caption width="650"] David 'dehhhhh' Coleman went back-to-back to finish #1 in New Jersey for the second consecutive month.[/caption] PokerStarsNJ NJSCOOP dominated the New Jersey online poker landscape in May and the New Jersey Online Poker Rankings were shaken up as a result. The one thing that did not change, though, is the #1 ranked player in the state, as David ‘dehhhhh’ Coleman retained his top spot among New Jersey’s finest. Coleman cashed 15 times during NJSCOOP and saved his best result for the biggest event of the series. The $500 buy in $200,000 guaranteed NJSCOOP Main Event drew 435 total entrants and Coleman came up just shy of besting them all and finished second. The $27,218 Coleman earned for his finish is his largest career online score. Making a big leap from seventh all the way up to second is Mike ‘Lav519’ Lavenburg. Lavenburg notched six NJSCOOP in-the-money finishes and also claimed 12 first place victories. The largest of those wins came at the start of the month when Lavenburg won the WSOP.com $500 Big Deal for $9,600. As a result of Lavenburg’s ascension, former NJ Online #1 Yong ‘ykwon17’ Kwon drops to third. Kwon became the second player in New Jersey history to break the $1,000,000 mark in career earnings in May. Additionally, Kwon won eight events including the WSOP.com Spring Poker Series Main Event for $12,950. Daniel ‘centrfieldr’ Lupo and Daniel ‘wildman75’ Buzgon flip-flopped the fourth and fifth place spot, respectively. Lupo earned an NJSCOOP win in the $200 HORSE event for $3,801. Buzgon had an excellent NJSCOOP that was highlighted by two victories on May 10. Buzgon won the $200 Bubble Rush and the $50 8-Game event effectively simultaneously for a combined $5,800. Overall, Buzgon cashed a whopping 25 times in NJSCOOP. Moving down from third to sixth is Jeremy ‘Jermz’ Danger. The first player to hit the $1,000,000 mark in New Jersey, Danger put in his standard high volume and picked up six wins in the month of May. In seventh place is Craig ‘craigruby’ Rubenstein, who cashed nine times in NJSCOOP and won Event 27-H: $100 No Limit Hold’em $15,000 guaranteed for $5,130. For the second straight month, Mike ‘MikeyCasino’ Azzaro and Fred ‘BiggDaddy’ Ferrell. Azzaro spent most of the month playing non-New Jersey sites and Ferrell won a solid 17 events. Both players are currently in Las Vegas for the time being and will be back to New Jersey soon to return to the online grind. Jason ‘JLaw’ Lawhun rounds out the top-10. Lawhun won the NJSCOOP Heads Up High event for $7,000, the largest of his six wins in May. 8. [caption width="640"] Yong “ykwon17” Kwon continues to rule the yard that is the New Jersey online poker rankings.[/caption] Yong ‘ykwon17’ Kwon jumped to #1 in the New Jersey Online Poker Rankings in March and has maintained his edge on the field for at least another month. Kwon emerged victorious in nine events over the course of the month with his largest score coming in the WSOP.com $50 buy in $10,000 guaranteed Warriors’ Opening Strike. That win earned Kwon $3,488 and marked his second victory in the event in 2017. Right behind Kwon is Jeremy ‘Jermz’ Danger, who is only 23 points from surging in front of Kwon and back into the first place perch he held for many months in 2016. True to his traditional form, Danger put in maximum volume and emerged with 17 wins in March. Danger earned over $5,200 for his victory in the PokerStarsNJ NJ City Series $200 buy in $25,000 guaranteed Progressive SuperKO Six Max event. Separated by less than a point between third and fourth are David ‘dehhhhh’ Coleman and Daniel ‘wildman75’ Buzgon. Coleman claimed 13 gold medals and with a $7,332 score in the PokerStarsNJ Sunday High Roller representing his largest win. Buzgon was busy claiming the Casino Championship at the Harrah’s Atlantic City WSOP Circuit stop but managed to find enough time to claim six wins, including a $10,225 jackpot in the PokerStarsNJ $50,000 guaranteed Sunday Special. Dropping three spots to number five this month is former NJ #1 Daniel ‘centrfieldr’ Lupo. Lupo notched six podium finishes and two victories in March. Like Buzgon, Craig ‘craigruby’ Rubinstein spent a healthy amount of time playing live in March. This month’s number six ranked player took home three wins and six other silver and bronze medals. Making his first appearance in the rankings in 2017 is Mike ‘MikeyCasino’ Azzaro. The partypokerNJ Garden State Spring Series was kind to Azzaro, as he earned $7,500 for his third place finish in the $1,060 $50,000 guaranteed High Roller event. In eighth place for the second consecutive month is NJ rankings constant Fred ‘BigDaddy’ Ferrell. March proved to be another solid stretch for Ferrell, who earned 12 victories. Remaining in the rankings after jumping in last month is Mike ‘Lav519’ Lavenburg. The best of Lavenburg’s four victories came at the end of the month when he won the partypokerNJ $15,000 guaranteed Mega Tuesday 500 for $6,105. 9. [caption width="640"] Daniel Buzgon is an accomplished poker player in his own right but he is also a menace on the golf course. (Will OC photo)[/caption] While clicking buttons or riffling chips takes up most of the time spent in “the office” of a professional poker player, like any other job, there are hobbies that players enjoy taking part in when they aren’t grinding. When the weather cooperates, the golf course is a well-traveled destination for players as the gambling nature of the game carries over along with the competition aspect. New Jersey native and resident Daniel ‘wildman75’ Buzgonhas a fondness for golf that stretches back to his childhood and led him to pursue a degree in Professional Golf Management from Arizona State University. It was there where the 32-year-old Buzgon first found poker. These days, Buzgon enjoys a life as a respected professional and he sees plenty of similarities in comparing the two games, calling golf “the perfect compliment to poker.” “I think golf and poker fit together perfectly for a lot of people for a lot of reasons. They are both individual ‘sports’ (using that term VERY loosely) where all the pressure is on you. There is no teammate to bail you out in crunch time and that's why I really enjoy both of them. Unlike a lot of sports or games, it is very easy to get a fair bet in golf because of the use of handicaps. Everyone is essentially even and it just matters who shows up and plays better on that day,” said Buzgon. Buzgon certainly knows of what he speaks when talking about the green felt and the putting green. The two-time World Poker Tour final tablist has over $1,600,000 in live tournament earnings to go along with $2,600,000 in online tournament cashes. In addition, Buzgon is the proud owner of a 2.5 handicap. In fact, Buzgon’s commitment to both poker and golf stretches so far that during Borgata Poker Open events, Buzgon can be seen sporting the necessary attire so that should he bust from the event he is playing, he can head directly to the golf course. Fortunately for Buzgon, he was forced to miss some tee times in September as he cashed in the Borgata Poker Open $2,000,000 guaranteed Event 1, Almighty Stack event, and the WPT Main Event. From all of his time shared between the tee box and green, Buzgon has picked up on a few of the nuanced similarities that golf and poker share and a keen understanding of how luck plays a role in both. “The only thing worse than listening to poker players bad beat stories is listening to golfers bad beat stories. You can do everything right in a hand and still lose while you watch your tablemate do everything wrong in a hand and still win," said Buzgon. "That's how the game works and of course, it’s frustrating as hell but stop worrying about it because you cannot control it. There is nothing more enjoyable than when you hit an awful shot and you get a favorable bounce and end up closer to the pin than your opponent who thought he just hit the best shot of his life. You can’t control the outcome so stop worrying about the results.” Fair is not the word that most people would use when initially describing the qualities of the games requiring two cards and a two iron. Buzgon acknowledges that dealing with adversity comes with the territory for both endeavors and that in tournament poker, sometimes laying up is good enough. “There have been so many times where I have been playing a round and everything is going along smoothly and then you lose focus for one shot and your whole round is essentially over. You are not going to win every hand that you play in a poker tournament and you are not going to hit every shot the way you want to over the course of a round. Dealing with these usually separates the good players from the elite ones.” Buzgon concedes that at this point in his poker career, he is content to stay home and play cash games online at night while golfing during the day instead of “traveling around living out of a suitcase playing tournaments.” The life of a full-time tournament grinder may be behind him but with the Borgata Winter Poker Open set to open on January 17, Buzgon will be ready to put his game to the test as there’s always another hole waiting to be played.

[caption width="650"] David 'dehhhhh' Coleman is the new #1 ranked player in New Jersey heading into NJSCOOP.[/caption] There’s a new sheriff in the state of New Jersey and his name is David ‘dehhhhh’ Coleman. The New Jersey Online Poker Rankings have been in flux for most of 2017 and Coleman represents the latest shakeup. Coleman put together a month that included 10 total victories and 13 additional podium finishes. The largest score for Coleman came in the WSOP.com $215 buy in $30,000 guaranteed Spring Poker Series Event #1 where Coleman earned $10,500 for his victory. Overall, Coleman is a little over $5,000 away from reaching the $500,000 mark in career online earnings. Falling one place from first to second is Yong ‘ykwon17’ Kwon. Kwon put together six wins, the largest of which being the $250 buy in $15,000 guaranteed Super Tuesday on PokerStarsNJ. That win was worth $6,291 to Kwon. Jeremy ‘Jermz’ Danger drops another spot in the rankings after being second in March. Even though he is now number three, Danger was able to attain 14 victories during April. For the second consecutive month, Daniel ‘wildman75’ Buzgon takes fourth in the rankings. Similar to March, Buzgon focused most of his efforts on playing live poker, primarily at the Borgata Spring Poker Open. That said, he was still able to attain a trio of top-three finishes. Also holding steady at their respective ranking from the previous month is Daniel ‘centrfieldr’ Lupo. Lupo found himself victorious in two events including the $500 buy in $15,000 guaranteed Tuesday Showdown on WSOP.com, worth $6,211. In sixth place, once again, is Craig ‘craigruby’ Rubenstein, who spent most of his April at the Borgata but still found time to win four MTTs. Jumping up from ninth to seventh in Mike ‘Lav519’ Lavenburg. It was a highly productive month for Lavenburg, who took down first place in seven tournaments. Climbing one spot from nine to eight is Mike ‘MikeyCasino’ Azzaro. Azzaro won six events in New Jersey and earned over $10,000 for a win on a non-New Jersey regulated site. Moving from eight down to nine is Fred ‘BiggDaddy’ Ferrell, who won an astounding 19 tournaments over the course of April. Rounding out the top-10 is Jason ‘JLaw’ Lawhun, who came up from out of the rankings to earn a spot among New Jersey’s elite. With NJSCOOP starting this weekend on PokerStarsNJ, the results from those events will go a long way toward deciding the rankings for the month of May.
