  4. [caption width="640"] Yong “ykwon17” Kwon is the #1 ranked online poker player in New Jersey.[/caption] Much like the first month of 2016, the second month of the new year hasn’t changed the players at the top of the New Jersey Online Poker Rankings, but it has changed their order. Last month, Mike 'JohnnyDrama' Haberman was atop that list, but after three players continued to crush through February, Haberman finds himself in fourth, on the outside of the top three looking up at the podium places. Yong “ykwon17” Kwon moved to the top of the rankings and his lead is nearly 250 points. That’s likely thanks to ten wins over the last month, including a victory in the massive partypoker.com $50,000 Sunday Major, an $11,480 score. In addition to his ten first place finishes, Kwon recorded 43 cashes in February, separating himself atop the current New Jersey rankings. Keith 'donnysacks' Donovan remains steadily grinding in second, notching a dozen podium finishes over the last month, including a BorgataPoker.com $10,000 Daily Major victory on February 17. Since then, he’s done well to keep pace with Kwon and after recording a final table run in WSOP.com’s $30,000 BIG Deal, more results over the next month could close that gap at the top of the leaderboard. While Haberman slipped out of the top three, Daniel 'RedsoxNets5' Sewnig moved himself into third after another consistent month of poker. While Sewnig’s rampant start to 2016 has slowed, he still managed to record another half-dozen outright wins through February. The best of these wins came last week, as Sewnig won the $10,000 Nightly R+A on WSOP.com for a $3,400 score. Behind that top four is where the rankings start to have a new look, as BorgataPoker.com pro Michael 'Gags30' Gagliano fell from 5th all the way to 10th, while Kevin 'Sofcknsickk' Campbell jumped from outside the top ten to sixth. That quick ascent has been due to a constant influx of volume for Campbell, who cashed nearly 40 times over the last month, with over half of those scores ending with final table appearances. Campbell came from outside the top ten to slot into the sixth spot, but Justin 'PocketProfits' Wong has made a smaller climb to get into the top five. After a relatively quiet first half of February, Wong notched one of the bigger scores in the state last week, winning WSOP.com’s $30,000 BIG Deal for just over $15,000. He’ll now try to continue that form into March and the Garden State Super Series, which got underway this past weekend. Over $1,000,000 is guaranteed through 62 events on the partypoker/BorgataPoker.com network, meaning that next month’s New Jersey rankings could have a much, much different look after the first major online series of the year. As it stands, the Garden State’s top ten is listed below: ykwon17 - 2,750.70 donnysacks - 2,513.97 RedsoxNets5 - 2,481.80 JohnnyDrama - 2,465.33 PocketProfits - 2,318.67 Sofcknsickk - 2,291.25 Mergulas - 2,277.49 Lav519 - 2,257.30 MikeyCasino - 2,238.83 Gags30 - 2,219.08
  5. [caption width="640"] Yong 'ykwon17' Kwon is #1 in New Jersey for the second consecutive month. (Will OC photo)[/caption] Yong ‘ykwon17’ Kwon reclaimed his place at #1 in the New Jersey Online Poker Rankings in July, maintaining his hold over David ‘dehhhhh’ Coleman for the second straight month. Kwon’s volume was down in August but he managed to collect a first, second, and third place finish with a $5,650 cash in the $50,000 guaranteed PokerStarsNJ Sunday Special marking his best result. Coleman finished the past month with seven victories, including a win in the PokerStarsNJ Super Tuesday. Additionally, Coleman crossed over the $700,000 mark in career online earnings. Coming into September, less than 70 PLB points separate Kwon and Coleman with a gap of 400 points standing between Coleman and #3 Daniel ‘centrfieldr’ Lupo. Lupo moved up from #5 in August by virtue of his five wins during the month. On August 20, Lupo won the Sunday Special for $10,225 and moved his career online earnings over $1,000,000 as a result. Holding steady at #4 is John ‘Selurznug’ Cosgrove, who put in maximum volume over the course of August and finished the month with 11 victories. Mike ‘Lav519’ Lavenburg went from #3 to #5 but made up for his fall with a major live score. Lavenburg finished second in the Parx Big Stax 1500 in a three-way deal and earned $90,000 for his performance. Former NJ #1 Jeremy ‘Jermz’ Danger comes in at sixth place with his online earnings all the way up to $1,350,000, keeping him as the all-time highest earner in the history of NJ online poker. Josh ‘thejberg’ Rothberg cashed only four times in August but managed to hang inside the top-10 at #7. The two newcomers to the rankings this month are Daniel ‘RedsoxNets5’ Sewnig at #8 and Andrew ‘Mergulas’ Glauberg in 10th position. After falling out of the rankings, Fred ‘BiggDaddy’ Ferrell is back in at #9. 6. [caption width="640"] Yong 'ykwon17' Kwon's is #1 in New Jersey for the first time since March. (Will OC photo)[/caption] Following a three-month stint on top of the New Jersey Online Poker Rankings, David ‘dehhhhh’ Coleman is no longer ranked #1 in the state. Yong ‘ykwon17’ Kwon is the new #1 after putting together a spectacular July. Kwon amassed 12 wins over the course of July’s 31 days and put his career online earnings over the $1,150,000 mark. The largest prize won by Kwon came when he shipped the WSOP.com Ultimate Warrior, collecting $11,200 in the process. The win is the third-highest payout of Kwon’s online career. Coleman is in second place now for now but still had a solid month. Despite being out in Las Vegas playing live events, Coleman was still able to win eight tournaments. The cash that sticks out the most, though, came at the World Series of Poker, where Coleman made a trip to the payout cage in the Main Event. In third place for the second time in as many months is Mike ‘Lav519’ Lavenburg. Lavenburg did not put in his usual volume but still came away with two podium finishes. Up to his career-best ranking at #4 in New Jersey is John ‘Selurznug’ Cosgrove, who followed up his 10 wins in June with eight more this past month. Cosgrove notched a win in the grueling PokerStars $200 buy in $60,000 guaranteed Sunday Special and earned $12,273 for the victory. A familiar face among the top-10, Daniel ‘centrfildr’ Lupo checks in at #5. Lupo had another solid month and took five victory laps in July. After jumping into the rankings last month at #5, Josh ‘therealjberg’ Rothberg falls to #6. It was still a productive month for Rothberg, as he put up three first place finishes and climbed onto the podium a total of seven times. Former NJ #1 Jeremy ‘Jermz’ Danger is in seventh place once again and has Dan ‘wildman75’ Buzgon right behind him in eighth. Matt ‘papamat25’ Iles climbs one spot to #9 despite cashing only fives times in all of July. The newest member of the rankings is Sridhar ‘Sri100k’ Sangannagar, who moves up from being just outside of the rankings last month. 7. The first three flights of the $500 Big 50 were busy and chaotic, but it turns out they were but a dress rehearsal for what happened Sunday at the 2019 World Series of Poker as 9,171 entries made the final flight the busiest day of the summer and officially turned the Big 50 into a record-shattering event. All of that somewhat overshadowed the two bracelets won on Sunday and a deep run by Phil Hellmuth that could have shaken the online poker world to its core. Big 50 Officially Becomes Largest Live Poker Tournament When the WSOP announced the Big 50 as the kickoff to their way of celebrating the kickoff to the 50th annual WSOP, expectations were high - but not high enough. After 19,326 players crammed the Rio hallways over the first three days, 9,171 showed up on Sunday to break the record for largest field ever. Players who didn't have a seat at the start of the day were lining up in the hallways as early as 8 AM with hopes of being one of the first players seated in the second wave of seating. The lines stretched in and out of nearly every one of the rooms in play with some players reporting waiting upwards of eight hours to get a seat. Andrei Khosh finished Day 1D with 970,000 for the biggest stack of the day. Arne Kern (963,000) and Kevin Mooney (944,000) were the only other players to break through the 900,000 chip mark. They're just three of the 2,103 players moving on to Day 2D. Some of the notables who also managed to bag chips on Sunday include Randy Lew, Grant Hinkle, David 'Bakes' Baker, Alex Lynskey, Craig Varnell and Anatoly Filatov. Players who advanced from Day 1C will return for Day 2C on Monday while Day 2D survivors will have an off day before returning to the felt on Tuesday. The players who survive the four Day 2s will combine into one field on Wednesday. "I try to just have fun when I’m playing. If I’m not having fun I’m usually not doing very well," McMaster said. "The more fun I have, it seems like stuff goes my way." He was clearly having a blast on Sunday afternoon as things definitely went his way at the final table of the $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo event. The 46-year-old Minnesota native defeated Jason Berilgen heads-up to win the first bracelet of his career and $228,228. "It was very surreal to me. I’ve just been on cloud nine since (Saturday) night, all week," McMaster said. "I was happy to be here and I enjoyed playing with these guys." McMaster said John Esposito, who started the final table with the chip lead, was the player who he had the most difficulty with. Esposito finished third for $98,807. Kwon's accomplishment was almost overshadowed though by the presence of Phil Hellmuth at the final table. Playing under the screen name 'lumestackin', Hellmuth finished fifth for $39,459.60. The event attracted 1,965 players to create a total prize pool of $1,017,000. Britain's Ben Heath started and ended the day with the chip lead. Heath bagged up 7,630,000 which puts him just ahead of American Sam Soverel with 7,540,000. Heath eliminated three players on Sunday (Matthew Gonzales, David Einhorn, Elio Fox) on his way to the chip lead. Andrew Lichtenberger (5,615,000) and Chance Kornuth (5,000,000) make up the middle of the pack while Nick Petrangelo (4,100,000) Gonzales, Grafton, Manig Loeser, Einhorn, Cary Katz and Elio Fox were the six players eliminated on Sunday, all finishing in the money with a six-figure score. Action resumes at Noon PT with the event streaming on PokerGO beginning at 1 PM PT. Jake Schwartz accomplished exactly that on Sunday, bagging up 789,000 at the end of Day 2 of the $2,500 Mixed Triple Draw event after finishing Day 1 with the biggest stack. Schwartz has yet to win a WSOP bracelet. His closest call came in 2013 when he finished runner-up to Simeon Naydenov in a $1,500 No Limit Hold'em Shootout event. Just 13 players remain in contention for the bracelet and $160,447 first place prize. Sumir Mathur sits second with 574,000. Two-time bracelet winner Mike Gorodinsky sits fourth with 483,000. Other notables still alive include Mark Gregorich (280,000), Jon Turner (228,000), Dan Zack (208,000), and Bryce Yockey (99,000). Action resumes at 2 PM and will continue until a winner is crowned. Played by some of the game's highest stakes regulars, Short Deck has enjoyed a meteoric rise in popularity over the past two years. So much so that the WSOP included it in their schedule. That being said, the first day of play drew just 61 entries - a far cry from the 200 players that some were expecting. Registration is open until the end of the second level of play on Monday and each player is allowed to re-enter once which should lead to a higher final number of players. Gabe Patgorski, one of just 25 players to have won more than $1 million in Short Deck tournaments, finished Day 1 with the lead after putting 388,000 in his bag. Alex Epstein, who has never cashed in a Short Deck tournament, ended in second with 323,000. Only 18 players finished Day 1 including Ben Lamb, Thai Ha, Jason Somerville, Justin Bonomo, Peter Jetten, and Dario Sammartino. Some of the players who were eliminated at least once on Sunday include Daniel Negreanu, Erik Seidel, David Peters, Dan Smith, Mike WEatson and Brian Green. Players will return at 3 PM to play another eight levels of play. 8. Earlier this week, Judge Paul Barbadoro of the US District Court concluded that the Wire Act only applied to sports betting. As a result, the World Series of Poker confirmed all online gold bracelet events will be available to players in both Nevada and New Jersey. "I hereby declare that § 1084(a) of the Wire Act, 18 U.S.C. § 1084(a), applies only to transmissions related to bets or wagers on a sporting event or contest," Barbadoro wrote in conclusion. "The 2018 OLC Opinion is set aside." The new opinion came following the Department of Justice’s claim that the Wire Act applied to all forms of online gambling and left gray clouds surrounding upcoming WSOP.com online gold bracelet events that were planned to take place across an interstate player pool. With the new opinion, the cloud has been lifted, at least for now, and interstate WSOP.com online gold bracelet events are a go. Prior to Barbadoro’s opinion, players in Nevada and New Jersey were only guaranteed the ability to compete in the first two online gold bracelet events. "Yes, barring something unforeseen, we plan on continuing with shared liquidity between Nevada and New Jersey for the remaining eight WSOP gold bracelet events between now and July 14," Seth Palansky, WSOP Vice President of Corporate Communications, said when asked to confirm if players in Nevada and New Jersey would be able to participate in online gold bracelet events going forward. WSOP.com recently completed the first of nine online gold bracelet events as part of the 2019 World Series of Poker, with Event #7: $400 No-Limit Hold’em Online Bracelet being won by Yong 'LuckySpewy1' Kwon. Kwon, who is currently the #2 ranked player in New Jersey, was playing out of the Garden State for the win. The event had a field size of 2,825 entries and Kwon scored $165,263 for first place. Fifteen-time gold bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth finished in sixth place. "Wins are few and far between for U.S. online poker these days, so any positive news is met with smiles from the staff," Palansky added. "It is very hard to watch DFS and sports betting, and even marijuana, spread quickly throughout the U.S., but a peer-to-peer game like poker, which is not a house-backed game and only sees operators take a cut to facilitate the play (like DFS and sports betting) be stuck in the mud. It’s very frustrating. Globally, more than 100 million people play poker and enjoy the game and we long for the day it is spread far and wide across the U.S. and taxed and regulated like any other legitimate business. Poker requires liquidity – a pooling of a large amount of players – to offer meaningful prize pools to get consumers excited. Interstate poker on a mass scale is critical to delivering on that." The 2019 WSOP schedule includes eight more online gold bracelet events, starting with Event #24: $600 Six Handed Pot Limit Omaha on June 9. Buy-ins for these remaining events range from $500 to $3,200, with the $1,000 Championship Event taking place June 30. 9. New Jersey grinder David 'dehhhhh' Coleman had a strong December on the virtual felt and as a result has taken over the #1 spot on the USA Online Poker Rankings. Coleman cashed 30 times in December but picked up a bulk of his points with impressive back-to-back wins in the PokerStars Sunday Special. On December 15, Coleman topped the 116-entry field in the $200 buy-in event to win $6,250 and lockup 158.11 PLB points. One week later, he beat out 114 other players to win another $6,250 and 158.11 PLB points. He also managed to pick up 102.7 points thanks to a runner-up finish in the WSOP $15,00 Weekly Saturday on December 8. His total earnings for December were $15,272. [ptable zone="Global Poker Article Ad"][ptable zone="888poker"][ptable zone="PokerStars NJ"] One spot behind Coleman was former #1-ranked American Yong 'ykwon17' Kwon. Kwon cashed just 14 times but managed to win the PokerStars NJ Nightly Stars on two separate occasions for 95.33 and 96.29 PLB points respectively. Sandwiched between those two scores was a sixth-place finish in the WSOP.com Sunday Weekly for 71.5 points. Jon 'itsmejon' Borenstein holds down the #3 spot following a massive month in terms of PLB points earned. He cashed just nine times and just three of those counted towards his PLB total. He won the WSOP.com $100,000 GTD Sunday on December 2 for $29,256 and 332.26 points. Three weeks later he did it again, this time winning $28,859 and 330 points. He also picked up 60.17 points for an eighth-place finish in the WSOP.com $30,000 Weekly Sunday on December 2 and 96.22 points for coming in third. Goodman continues to hold on to the top spot despite taking nearly all of December off. He cashed just once and it wasn't a strong enough finish to count towards his PLB total. Tanner 'Bamatide88' Bibat sits at #2 after having three of his five December cashes boost his PLB points total to 2,783. On December 17, Bibat finished second in the $5,555 Weekly Monday for $1,071 and 52.37 points. Then, on December 23, he finished 11th in the WSOP.com $15,000 Weekly Sunday Deepstack for $262 and 33.68 points before taking down the WSOP.com $7,000 Daily Turbo Deepstack for $2,179 and 87.43 points. He then picked up 45.42 points in the Sunday $100,000 to finish off the month. Ian 'APokerJoker2' Steinman moved up to #4 in Nevada after having four of his five December cashes add 212.59 points to his PLB total. 10. Over the past few years, there hasn't been a more dominant player in the New Jersey online scene than Yong 'LuckySpewy1' Kwon. He's won a World Series of Poker bracelet, a pair of PokerStars New Jersey Championship of Online Poker titles, and a PokerStars New Jersey Spring Championship of Online Poker title and accumulated more than $3.2 million in earnings. And throughout most of that, he's been the #1-ranked online poker player in the United States. Kwon sits atop the USA rankings again after picking up eight qualifying cashes - four of them wins - in May and then kicking off June with a five-figure win. Kwon's biggest May score came after defeating Chris Moorman heads-up in the $500 buy-in WSOP.com $50,000 Weekly Sunday on May 11 for $22,752 and 285.06 PLB points. He also won the WSOP.com $10,000 daily twice and had three qualifying cashes from the late states of the Spring Online Championships. Trailing Kwon by 283 points, Mike 'Lav519' Lavenburg also had eight qualifying cashes in May including a win the WSOP.com Money May Series Event #92 ($500 Six Max PLO High Roller) where he banked $11,462 and boosted his PLB points total by 217.18. He had a pair of Spring Online Championship final tables as well as another May Series final table. On June 1 he finished 27th in the WSOP.com $100,000 Guaranteed. Rounding out the top three is yet another New Jersey grinder. Jon 'itsmejon' Borenstein is 212 points behind Lavenburg and 495 points behind Kwon. Borenstein started out May on fire adding 659.2 PLB points to his total thanks to four cashes between May 4 and May 6. On May 4 he finished sixth and ninth in a pair of WSOP.com Spring OC events and runner-up in the WSOP.com $50,000 Weekly Sunday. His biggest score of the month came on May 6 when he earned $21,561 and 275.05 PLB points for outlasting 91 other players to ship the $500 Tuesday Showdown. While the rest of the top 10 is populated by players from the Garden State, the top-ranked player from Nevada is James 'prdawg420' Vales. Coming in at #13, Vales is 1,805 points behind Kwon and is only able to collect points on WSOP.com. Vales had 13 qualifying cashes in May, highlighted by a runner-up result from the WSOP.com Tuesday Showdown on May 27 where he added $15,206 to his career earnings and 202.13 PLB points to his total.
