  4. The Borgatain Atlantic City has taken the initiative to beef up security in its poker tournaments by introducing brand new chips boasting several modern-day features designed to thwart counterfeiters. The purchase of the high-tech chips was reportedly the direct result of the scandal allegedly caused at least in part by Christian Lusardi, a North Carolina man who was charged with introducing fake chips into an event in January. "This was very expensive, but very necessary," Borgata Senior Vice President Joe Lupo said to the Atlantic City press. "In order to have the biggest tournaments in Atlantic City and as the market leader, we need to ensure the integrity of the games." The new tournament chips will display a more intricate design, make use of more colors, and come installed with an authentication device that can be checked under ultraviolet light. On top of that, security will now make rounds to periodically verify that the chips are genuine in a measure Lupo called "the new normal." In January, Lusardi won $6,814 in the tournament allegedly with the help of the phony chips, which he later admitted to purchasing from China and hiding in the casino's bathroom. Eventually, players realized that the chips weren't genuine and alerted Borgata's staff, who suspended the tournament and launched an investigation. Lusardi(pictured) later returned to his hotel at Harrah's Atlantic City, but sensing his scheme had been uncovered, apparently flushed the rest of his $2.8 million in bogus chips down the toilet. The move proved to be his downfall, though, as the chips clogged the hotel's drainage system, causing guests to complain about leaking pipes and leading maintenance men to find the strange source of the problem in Lusardi's room. While the North Carolina man was subsequently arrested, his actions caused a whole host of problems for Borgata and the players involved in the tournament. The event was frozen with 27 players remaining, but not after several finishers had already been paid. In February, affected players filed a class-action lawsuit against the casino alleging that Borgata had committed fraud by failing to provide adequate supervision of the tournament. They now seek to be refunded their buy-ins plus food, travel, and hotel costs. As part of the investigation by the New Jersey State Police and the Division of Gaming Enforcement, the $1.5 million in remaining prize money has been frozen and certain denominations of chips have been sequestered. In fact, the casino's need to replenish its stock was one factor that led to the purchase of the new high-tech chips. Lusardi's troubles didn't end with the tournament, either. After police raided his Fayetteville home, they found a collection of 37,500 pirated DVDs, DVD burners, and packaging equipment allegedly used to distribute the illegal material. For the tournament cheating scandal alone, Lusardi, who has already been arrested on gambling offenses in the past, has been charged with theft and rigging a public contest. He remains in custody awaiting trial while authorities continue to investigate his bootlegging activities. At Borgata, the new chips were already in play on Tuesday after being debuted during the Spring Poker Open. Along with the new chips, the casino has vowed to add more security during its poker events and conduct more chip counts each day. "Considering that we have biggest poker tournaments on the East Coast and we expect to continue to do so, it's imperative that we ensure that our customers have confidence in the integrity of the tournaments," said Lupo. 5. The end-of-season World Poker Tour Championship is on the move. This year, the tournament will move across the United States from its old digs at the Bellagio in Las Vegas to the Borgata in Atlantic City. The action begins on April 21 and features the New Jersey Championship of Online Poker, or NJCOP, running alongside it, giving players the chance to battle offline and online. Sign up for PartyPoker New Jerseyand sign up for Borgata Poker today. WPT President Adam Pliska commented in a press release that a change of scenery for the WPT Championship should provide a fresh start: "After 11 years in Las Vegas, we saw an interesting opportunity to shake things up and update our iconic Championship. With the move to New Jersey, the lower buy-in, and the support of PartyPoker, which is qualifying players online, we're giving players who may never have been able to join us for this prestigious event a chance to enjoy the ultimate WPT experience." New Jersey players will have a unique opportunity, as PartyPoker and Borgata Poker are qualifying players for the WPT Championship. There are three ways to score a WPT Championship seat, including a 64-player Heads-Up Shootout on April 13 at 4:00pm Eastern Time, three freezeouts the same day that range in buy-in from $100 to $2,000, and a Last Chance Qualifier on April 17. The Borgata has been the site of five of the six largest WPT events ever, including Season X's Borgata Poker Open, which drew 1,313 entrants, and January's Borgata Winter Poker Open, which attracted 1,229 entrants. First place in the WPT Championship is guaranteed $1.35 million. This year, the tournament boasts a more affordable $15,400 buy-in. One PartyPoker official told PocketFives that the WPT Championship represents "one of the best TV poker events in the world and the crown jewel of the WPT." The same source added, "Making the WPT Championship a success in New Jersey would be great for all of us: for PartyPoker, for Borgata, and for the New Jersey poker landscape." Last year, David "Chino" Rheem won the WPT Championshipand earned $1.1 million, defeating Erick Lindgren heads-up in a final table that also included PocketFiver David Davidp18 Peters, who finished sixth. The 2013 WPT Championship, which had a $25,500 buy-in, drew 146 entrants. The NJCOP runs from April 19 to 27, concurrently with the WPT Championship, and has a $500 High Roller on April 27 that guarantees $20,000 to first place. The NJCOP will shell out at least $600,000 total across 15 events. Sign up for PartyPoker New Jerseyand sign up for Borgata Poker today. You don't have to be a New Jersey resident to play on either site; instead, you just need to be physically located in the Garden State. Best of luck to all PocketFivers entering the WPT Championship and NJCOP! Want the latest poker headlines and interviews? Follow PocketFives on Twitterand Like PocketFives on Facebook. 6. Oliver odi420Dent (pictured) battled through a field of over 800 players to make the final table of the New Jersey Championship of Online Poker Main Event on Borgata Pokerand PartyPokeron Sunday, April 27. When all was said and done, Dent finished in seventh place, taking home $4,900, which is his largest cash to date on any of the New Jersey regulated sites. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: Congrats on getting seventh in the New Jersey Championship of Online Poker Main Event. Tell us how you are feeling. Oliver Dent: I am pretty happy at the moment considering I took Monday to Friday off prior to that Sunday after an awful run in the $100,000 Guarantee on Party/Borgata the Sunday prior. Pocketfives: How tough was the final table? Oliver Dent: It was pretty tough considering I came in as the short stack with about 15 big blinds and had two monstrous-stack aggro players directly to my left. I tried to wait and pick up a hand to shove with, as the two big stacks were being very active. I picked up Q-Q and shoved into an earlier position raiser, who took about a minute to call with 5-5. He flopped quads, which ended my tournament run. Pocketfives: Do any particular hands stick out during your final table run? Oliver Dent: About five hours in, I had 5-5 in late position facing an UTG min-raise and a call. I called and saw a flop of A-5-J. UTG checked and the caller promptly bet half the pot. I flatted and the UTG raiser instantly made a healthy raise. The caller folded and it was back to me. At this point, I was actually thinking of folding because of the dreaded set versus under-set scenario. After about a minute of going through hand ranges, I put him on A-K or A-J, called, was shown A-J, and the board ran out well for me. I went from about 400th place with 500 left to top 20 and stayed there for pretty much the remainder of the tournament. Pocketfives: Do you have any plans for the money you won? Oliver Dent: I think I am going to surprise the wife with a Jamaican vacation for the week after Christmas. Want the latest poker headlines and interviews? 7. On Sunday, March 16, Anthony Cofone (Parmakeron PocketFives) from Oakland, New Jersey outlasted a field of 342 players to win the Party/Borgata $50,000 Guarantee Sunday Major. He took home a cool $12,021 for his efforts. Cofone, who is new to the PocketFives community, also had a deep run in the Party/Borgata $100K Guarantee on March 2, finishing 71st out of 786 players, banking $712. PocketFives: Congrats on your win in the Party/Borgata $50K. Tell us how you're feeling. Anthony Cofone: I hate to answer this like everyone else has, but it's true about feeling numb and it will take days to set in. PocketFives: Do any hands from the $50K stick out to you? Anthony Cofone: There is one hand I didn't play well. It was a non-premium hand played out of position, which left me crippled with 6,300 in chips. We were several hours deep in the tournament with over 3 million chips in play and the average stack of almost 40,000 with 83 players left. Of course, I will always remember the winning hand, calling an all-in bet heads-up pre-flop with 6-6. PocketFives: Do you play on any New Jersey online poker rooms other than PartyPoker and Borgata Poker? Anthony Cofone: I also play on WSOP.comand 888 Poker if there is any sit and go action or a good tournament going on. The graphics are great and truth be told, I love the "Throw Item" feature on 888. I think it is great to throw an egg or snowball at someone who makes you make a hard fold or lays a bad beat on you. I even like when they throw stuff at me. PocketFives: What have your friends and family said about the win? Anthony Cofone: Everyone is very excited and happy for me. Almost as good as winning was getting to have my cousin Joey sitting next to me for the final seven hours. He is the best rail you can have. My wife June has not only been supportive, but also downright encouraging of my poker and I thank her for that. PocketFives: How did you get started in poker originally and why was it appealing? Anthony Cofone: I grew up in the 60s and 70s in a family and neighborhood where it seamed like everyone played cards. My mom, dad, and I shared a two-family house with my grandparents and uncles. The men mostly played gin. My grandmother, Daisy, ran a $0.05/$0.10 poker game for the ladies in the neighborhood. My first memory of playing poker was at 13. We would play after mass on Sunday at Mrs. Trisolini's house for pennies. I started to play Texas Hold'em eight years ago on a PlayStation WSOP game before depositing on Full Tilt and PokerStars until Black Friday. I love the pure game of tournament poker, love playing live at Borgata, and hope to make it out to the World Series again soon. Want the latest poker headlines and interviews? 8. It's springtime in New Jersey. With the changing of the season will come a massive $600,000 guaranteed series on Borgata Pokerand PartyPokercalled the New Jersey Championship of Online Poker, or NJCOP. The action begins on April 19 and wraps up eight days later with a gigantic $200 buy-in $200,000 Guaranteed Main Event on April 27. The winner of the Main Event will take home at least $50,000. 9. According to the recurring Scouting Reportfrom PokerScout, the last four weeks saw the needle move in New Jersey somewhat due to a special promotion from the PartyPoker/Borgata PokerNetwork. After the network's 25 millionth hand was dealt in March, the site geared up almost immediately for its 30 millionth hand promotion. That 30 millionth hand was reached on Sunday, but it didn't seem to drive the traffic the network had hoped for. Throughout the day on Sunday, the key hands drew in some action, but overall, PokerScout noted that liquidity peaked at 500 cash game players. The 30 millionth hand saw the winner take a $10,000 prize, but according to PokerScout, "The players just didn't seem to be very interested." Party/Borgata has been able to control the market for the most part, taking in 43% of the action in the state since the market's launch last November. Caesars Entertainment's WSOP.com has risen up to challenge Party/Borgata, holding 32% of the traffic. These two rooms are basically the "big dogs," especially when the other rooms in the Garden State's online poker industry are put in the picture. The All American Poker Network (888 Poker) has been able to move into a solid third place in the market, taking a 23% share. Ultimate Poker, which is associated with Trump Taj Mahal, has seen its numbers fall to 1% of the market share. The March numbers overall for New Jersey, one of two states that allow full intrastate online casino gaming, showed that while people might not be heading to the virtual poker rooms, they are taking advantage of the other gaming options. The outlets mentioned above were able to bring in $8.6 million in revenuefor the month, an increase over a $7.1 million win rate in February. Of that total, $3.2 million was generated by online poker, virtually the same as February's numbers ($3.1 million), but slightly better than the PokerScout report's projection of $3.08 million. Breaking down the revenue in the online gaming scene, Party/Borgata was at the head of the pack with $4.4 million in overall online casino revenues and Caesars/888 pulled in $3.7 million. The Tropicana/Virgin venture was third in the market, pulling in $1.9 million overall, while Trump/Ultimate ($682,639), the Golden Nugget ($677,746) and Trump/Betfair ($509,556) rounded out the field. In addition to running satellites for the World Poker Tour World Championship that begins next week, Party/Borgata will begin the New Jersey Championship of Online Poker (NJCOP) on April 19, guaranteeing $600,000 in prize pools over its 15-event schedule. There's even a special NJCOP leaderboard for PocketFivers that you can opt into by clicking here. Caesars is gearing up for the World Series of Poker at the end of May by offering satellites to the Main Event and $1,500 events. Check out WSOP.com for more details. 11. In case you missed it on Sunday, the New Jersey Championship of Online Poker Main Event attracted a sizable field of 892 players at a buy-in of $185 apiece. Despite the nearly 900 players who turned out, the tournament, which took place on Borgata Pokerand PartyPoker and guaranteed $200,000, still featured a $34,000 overlay. You probably won't hear any complaints from the users who cashed, however. MikeFrancesaultimately emerged victorious from the NJCOP Main Event field, earning $33,000 and leading the group of 144 players who cashed. There was a four-way chop when all was said and done, with PocketSomunfinishing in second place for $20,000, cb123579taking third for $26,000, and MotherOfDragons taking fourth for $23,000. Here's how the final nine cashed out, reflecting the deal amounts: 1. MikeFrancesa - $33,577 2. PocketSomun - $20,000 3. cb123579 - $26,459 4. MotherOfDragons - $23,164 5. Atlas - $9,000 6. sp015 - $6,900 7. TheRealOD - $4,900 (odi420) 8. dapunisher - $2,900 9. luckymanib319 - $2,000 In PocketFives' New Jersey pokercommunity, players were posting their runs in the Main Event. Among them was curiousgeorge77, who typed, "So close, yet so far away. Busted 14th got caught stealing with Q-10 into A-8. Then had 20k left, but miracle to get to 60k. Then almost hit another miracle back to 200k with Q-8 vs A-10, flop K-Q-4, turn X, river J, go me. Damn, so close." PocketFiver odi420(pictured) made the final table and finished in seventh place for $4,900. He posted in the same New Jersey Local thread, "Well that was fun. Q-Q < 5-5 for 1.5m at the final table. Aipf and he flops quads. $5k will help take the sting off tomorrow." A few PocketFivers were not too impressed with their performances, among them Redhotmomma, who joked on Monday morning, "I played horribly and want to dip my face in a vat of boiling oil. Too many great opportunities this past week and either I was donked on or I played terribly." Jaybone2315 lamented, "I didn't win a single showdown in almost 4 hours. That was less than exciting." 13. A recent software update was made available for PartyPokerand Borgata Poker players in New Jersey. The enhancements made with this update, some of which came at the behest of players, include tournament lobby changes, in-game features, improved mobile geolocation technology, and the addition of payment processing at the Borgata cage during World Poker Tour events. The improvements made with the tournament lobby when viewing in the "Classic View" include a side panel that now appears on the right-hand side that gives you a summary of the details such as buy-in, number of players, prize pool, rebuy availability, and how long late registration is available. Prior to this update, you had to open the tournament lobby to get this information. Sit and go grouping is another feature that was added. This will group all the same sit and gos based on buy-in level and number of seats. By putting a checkmark next to "Group Sit & Gos," the software will consolidate them and not list every sit and go that is not filled up. Just click "Register Now" and it will put you in the next sit and go that is filling up. Sit and go grouping is pictured below. The use of tournament tickets just got easier. When browsing the tournament lobby, a ticket icon will appear next to tournaments with buy-ins that you have tickets for. So, if you have a $200 ticket, an icon will appear next to the $50,000 Guarantee or any other tournament that has a $200 buy-in. You will also notice a "My Tickets" link at the bottom of your tournament lobby that brings you to your tournament ticket page in the "Rewards" section of the software. This is available in both the "Classic" and "One-Touch" lobbies. One important feature that most players wanted to see was an auto re-buy and auto add-on option for rebuy tournaments. You can select to auto rebuy "single" or "double." A checkbox is available for "Auto Add-On," which will automatically deduct the funds needed for the add-on period of an MTT. If you forget to put a checkbox in the "Auto Add-On" box, a display box will appear on your screen asking if you wish to add on. Prior to this, there was no way of knowing when the add-on was available other than awareness of the current stage of a tournament. The software upgrade now provides mobile users with greater certainty and increased accuracy when it comes to getting your location verified for play on phones and tablets. Since the Garden State Super Series will coincide with the WPT Borgata Poker Open, Borgata has announced it will have deposits and withdrawals available for PartyPoker NJ players through the Borgata Casino cashier cages during the tournament series. This will be very convenient for players who will want to move money back and forth from PartyPoker/Borgata Poker. Visit Borgata Pokerand visit PartyPokertoday. 15. PocketFives had the opportunity to catch up with Jermz(pictured, ranked # 7 in New Jersey), who started playing poker around the fourth grade with his older brother in home games. When not playing poker, he spends time adding content to his blog. With close to $100,000 in recorded online cashes, his accomplishments include two wins in the WSOP.com $25,000 Guarantee Sunday Major for over $7,000 each and a win in the PartyPoker/Borgata Poker Garden State Super Series $20,000 Guaranteed PLO Six-Max for $3,650. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: Give us your thoughts and experiences of regulated online poker in New Jersey. Jermz: Regulated online poker in New Jersey has been amazing and terrible at the same time. It's way better than playing on the unregulated sites after Black Friday. The action on the tables has been pretty solid. It is pretty loose and it's often pretty fun to be playing. The reason I say it's terrible at the same time is because the sites are either clueless or putting forth partial effort. There is so much room for things to improve and grow, but the proper actions just aren't taken. It makes things pretty frustrating, especially lately with good MTTs being cut away and not being replaced. The promos the sites are running are misguided or are run pretty poorly, not to mention that MTT players get the shaft in the promo department, as there are no promos run for MTTs. Do the sites really expect growth when they don't even try to get people to play? Every week there are leaderboards for sit and gos and very often there are cash game leaderboards, but what about us MTT grinders? PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play on and why? Jermz: This is a pretty hard question, but I would have to say 888. It might be surprising, but that's the site where I've made the most money this year. Also, I really like the diversity in their MTT schedule. If they can get their guarantees higher, I think they could become the premier MTT site in New Jersey. However, their cash game action is pretty slow right now and it seems to be in a decline for a while. I have to mention that I am extremely disappointed in WSOP. For a site whose brand throws the biggest tournament series every summer in Las Vegas, they should feel embarrassed about having the worst daily tournament schedule. I am down to playing one tournament a night on there and they continually refuse to improve things. A couple of months ago, they cut my favorite small buy-in tournament from their schedule, the $1,500 Bounty, and last month they increased the nightly $10,000 buy-in. I now spend on average $7 more per night. This change came out of nowhere. There was no warning and no reason behind it. They should treat their regulars better than that. PocketFives: How many hours do you dedicate to poker a week? Jermz: I play roughly 35 to 40 hours a week. On top of that, I've been studying more lately. Also, I do a bunch of other random poker-related activities like blogging, making poker videos, checking out new promos, and boo- keeping. It's a lot of computer time. PocketFives: How did you get started in poker originally? Why was it appealing? Jermz: I started playing poker in fourth grade. My older brother would play with his friends all the time and eventually I started joining in. It was always random home games and I don't think we ever played No Limit Hold'em. Instead, there were games like Acey Duecey, 7-27, Midnight Baseball, Five Card Draw, and many others. It appealed to me because it was exciting. You played games for money. Gambling is awesome. Also, poker involves a ton of strategy and I've always loved strategy games. PocketFives: To what do you attribute your current online success? Jermz: Determination and support from friends and family. You're going to fail and get kicked around a lot in poker, but you have to take your beatings. Use it to motivate yourself to learn even more about the game. Also, get your friends and family behind you. I only have one friend who truly has a deep understanding of poker and he has been a giant help with me becoming a winning player. All of my other friends and family might not understand the game at the level I do, but their support helps so much.

  17. On Sunday, October 26, Rodney VetstadiumKoodray (pictured, ranked #16th in New Jersey) outlasted a field of 264 players to come out victorious in the PartyPoker/Borgata Poker$50,000 Guarantee Sunday Major, recording his largest online cash of $10,000. The win also earned him a $100K badge on PocketFives, which was one of his poker goals for 2014. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: Congrats on your win in the Party/Borgata $50,000 Guarantee. Tell us how you're feeling. Rodney Koodray: I am feeling great after the win. I was on a slight downswing in the last two months and it seemed I was taking bad beats left and right. I reevaluated my game and think I may have plugged a few leaks just by rereading different ideas on PocketFives. I'll give a shout out to fellow PocketFiver Mike mikewebb68 Webb; it was his random comment I read recently when scrolling through the forums that really stuck in my head. PocketFives: Can you walk us through how the tournament went in general? Rodney Koodray: The tournament was one of those when it seemed all of my hands held up and I won pivotal races. PocketFives: Do any hands from the $50K stick out? Rodney Koodray: There are three hands that stick out for me. The first was for my tournament life. I thought the cutoff was stealing, so I re-stole with 7-5 suited. He had sixes and I spiked a seven for my tournament life. Then, with about 20 or 30 left, I spiked a set of eights versus aces with the perfect flop and turn and he couldn't get away from the hand. The third hand was short-handed and was a huge flip with my Q-Q versus A-K suited. After that hand, I honestly felt it was my tournament to lose. PocketFives: Do you have any plans for the money? Rodney Koodray: My wife and I discussed a trip to Puerto Rico or Florida. On Tuesday, I called into a radio station and won a trip to Universal Studios. So, the money will help pay for the kids to go too. PocketFives: What have your friends and family said about the win? Rodney Koodray: I've only told my close friends and family and they are thrilled.

  20. If you haven't heard, PartyPokerand Borgata Pokerin New Jersey have announced the schedule for the Garden State Super Series II, the second iteration of the ambitious online poker tournament series for New Jersey players. Sign up for Borgata Poker hereand sign up for PartyPoker here! The GSSS II will run from January 11 to 25 at PartyPoker and Borgata Poker and promises $1 million in guaranteed prize money. The series consists of 23 tiered events, each offering a low, medium, and high buy-in level, creating a total of 69 tournaments. Buy-ins range from $5 to $1,000, allowing players of all bankrolls a chance to get into the action. "We are delighted to once again bridge the live and online poker experience in New Jersey with the second installment of the Garden State Super Series," said PartyPoker Director of Poker Jeffrey Haas. "Complementing the WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open with the GSSS II creates a tremendous amount of value for our players and creates a true festival of poker." The series offers plenty of special events, including a $200 buy-in $75,000 Guaranteed NLHE Six-Max tournament, a $200 buy-in $100,000 Guaranteed NHLE event, and a massive $200 buy-in $150,000 Guaranteed NLHE Main Event. PartyPoker and Borgata Poker will offer qualifiers to GSSS II events for as little as $0.25 right down to the end of the series. Tournament organizers have done a great job making changes requested by players after the inaugural GSSS. This year, the Main Event will take place on the final day rather than in the middle of the series. Organizers have also added NLHE Heads-Up tournaments and a top-heavy prize structure that will see fewer cashes and higher payouts for top finishers. In addition, the series offers a variety of new structures like the Super Bounty, which will pool half of the buy-ins for winners. GSSS II also includes a more diverse array of non-NLHE games; LHE, PLO8, Seven-Card-Stud, and PLO are all offered this season. During the first GSSS, Party drew the ire of some New Jersey poker players when a "technical difficulty" forced the site to cancel the Main Event and refund runners. To its credit, Party owned up to the mistake and apologized for the "enormous burden" it had placed on players that night. To make things right, the site added an extra $50,000 to the final six tournaments. The extra cash was a huge motivator, drawing more than enough players to meet guarantees for the events that day. As the GSSS wraps up on the 25th with a $50,000 guarantee, Borgata and WPT will kick off the popularBorgata Winter Poker Open. The $3,500 buy-in tournament features a $3 million guarantee and will run two starting flights. Players can qualify online exclusively at the Borgata or PartyPoker websites. With BWPO preliminary events running concurrently with the GSSS, Borgata has encouraged players to bring their laptops to the casino if they would like to participate in both. Players may conveniently make deposits and withdrawals from their PartyPoker and Borgata accounts right at the Borgata cage. "It's a pleasure to welcome back the World Poker Tour for what will undoubtedly be another extremely successful tournament," said Borgata Senior Vice President of Operations Joe Lupo. "As our poker product evolves and advances in both online and land-based content, it is important to have the type of valued partnership we do with WPT." The inaugural GSSS isn't PartyPoker's first attempt at a tournament series in the regulated US market. In April, the site hosted the New Jersey Championship of Online Poker, which featured 17 events and $600,000 in guaranteed prize money. 22. “I definitely don’t consider myself a pro. I’m a school psychologist.” Chris ‘Billypoker1’ Bilinsky may not be a professional online poker player, but he’s not your typical school psychologist either. Bilinsky is a long-time New Jersey online grinder who has recently made the move from his home in Pennsauken, NJ to the City of Brotherly Love - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Now, in just under a year of making the move, he’s taken Pennsylvania online poker by storm. “Honestly, it all got started because I had a couple of good sessions over at our local [card room]. That led me to play online. I was like, 'I’m gonna get better playing really low stakes online so that I can do better live'...but I just started doing really well online. It’s so much more convenient. So, I just kinda stuck with [online] more than live. Live is still fun but you can’t beat the convenience of your house.” He’s done really well online indeed. He currently sits as the #8-ranked player in the Keystone State and is rapidly approaching $400,000 in total lifetime online cashes. However, despite having more success than most in the online poker arena, Bilinsky keeps it all in perspective. “This is my second year working full-time, and poker is definitely a nice little side job. At this point I’m doing so well with it, it’s not really a side job...actually, it’s kind of like a second income. But I definitely like the [work/poker] balance because I don’t know if I would be able to sustain being a professional for a long period of time.” Online poker's place in his own life isn’t the only thing he has a good perspective on. Having played in the legalized, regulated online poker market of New Jersey, Bilinsky also has a first-hand view of what to expect when online poker finally goes live in Pennsylvania on July 15. Having spent much of his twenties regularly playing on sites like PokerStars NJ, Borgata Poker and WSOP.com he has experienced how potential players gravitate to online sites in a regulated U.S. market. “I think it’s really important that they get the word out and let people know that it’s regulated now. They talk about the population of Pennsylvania and how that’s supposed to drive customers, but that alone isn’t just going to bring people in. They really have to market this and make sure that people are aware this is happening.” He’s certainly aware that his online options in his new home state are about to open up dramatically, with as many as seven online operators, including online poker heavyweights PokerStars, partypoker and WSOP.com, approved to offer online poker in the state. “I’m just waiting for regulated online to start,” Bilinsky said when talking about what he hopes will follow the impending launch. “Short term, I really have no idea what to expect. I hope to see something every Sunday, like a $100K [guarantee]. Maybe more than $100K! New Jersey and Nevada have $100K every Sunday and I’m hoping that there’s something in Pennsylvania to match it, we’ll see. “Long term, you really want everyone to get together. It’s fairly obvious you want Pennsylvania to get together with New Jersey and Nevada and just build that network. You want New York to be involved and, hopefully, California. All that stuff seems to very slowly be making progress.” For now though as he waits to see what is in store for the Pennsylvania online poker community, Bilinsky continues to occasionally make it out to Sugarhouse Casino for some live tournaments and occasionally dabble online. “I like to stay sharp, I like to keep playing so that when the launch does happen, I’m not rusty at all,” he said. That said, life stays hectic for Bilinsky and poker is just a part of it. From coaching a middle school baseball team and balancing his full-time job, he has scaled back a bit from of his former volume in New Jersey. It has been a good thing for him, both personally and for his poker game. “I am very excited by there finally being a lunch date and I’m watching the New Hampshire lawsuit closely,” Bilinsky said. However, Bilinsky, the school psychologist, is good at keeping perspective. “It’s also important to keep doing other stuff.”
