  2. This weekend in New Jersey, the Garden State Super Series continued to run on PartyPoker/Borgata Poker. flushoff11 (Flushoff11on PocketFives) won Event #9 ($20,000 Guarantee 6-Max), taking home $3,167. The winner of Event #10 ($20,000 Guaranteed Rebuy) was Katonik, who cashed for $4,190. The PartyPoker Network experienced serious technical difficulties with the Garden State Super Series and other tournaments on Sunday night. This caused many New Jersey poker players to become outraged over the cancellations of any tournaments, including the GSSS Main Event. Players were refunded their buy-ins for tournaments that never started and also received some kind of pay out for tournaments they were still playing in. Over on WSOP.com, longtime PocketFiver Mike Gags30Gagliano (pictured) won both Sunday majors. Gags won the $10,000 Sunday Weekly Guarantee and also the $25,000 Guarantee, adding a total of $10,276 to his bankroll. Gagliano has over $2 million in tracked online cashes and is an instructor with PocketFives Training. Dan centrfieldrLupo was victorious in the Ultimate PokerSunday $2,500 Guarantee, pocketing $1,125. Winning the 888 Big Sunday $10,000 Guarantee was Showers, who banked $3,200. 7. [caption width="640"] Daniel Lupo holds down a full-time job as well as a top-five ranking in New Jersey (Borgata photo)[/caption] In the competitive world that is New Jersey online poker, most of the names and faces at the top of the PocketFives rankings are players who make their primary living from playing poker. In the case of Daniel 'centrfieldr' Lupo, the full-time architect has been making his mark on the New Jersey scene from the time online poker became regulated in the state and continues to dominate despite playing a limited schedule. With only a few months left in 2016, Lupo sits currently third in the PocketFives New Jersey rankings. Lupo credits his full-time job for giving him a sense a balance along with not having a sense of financial security unrelated to poker. "For me, having a full-time job that can support my family allows me to enjoy poker a lot more and not feel overwhelmed or overburdened by the game and feeling the need to profit every session," said Lupo. Additionally, Lupo says that his brain being wired for the abstract nature of the architecture world to helping him when he plays. "I guess my creative design way of thinking allows me to think outside of the box at times in poker, which can be a good and a bad thing [laughs]. I have been called everything from a nit to a maniac and I think that's great," said Lupo. Even with all of his success, Lupo has been through a lot over the last 12 months. Lupo became a father to twins in late 2015 and was expecting another child before tragedy struck and the pregnancy was lost this summer. Lupo says the ups and downs of the past year have given him a new outlook on poker and life in general. "Within the past 12 months I've had more emotional highs and lows than I ever thought possible. I learned [a lot] this past year about myself and about what's truly important in life. Poker isn't life; there are far more important things out there. But while I'm playing poker, and it's taking time away from me with my family I'm going to give it 100% focus and do my best to provide for my family." With his busy schedule of working as an architect and helping his wife Laura take care of their kids, Lupo still manages to make the most out of the time he is able to play which is usually only a few nights a week. "I'm only playing full MTT sessions twice a week, Sundays and Tuesdays. My weeknight sessions normally start after I help put the kids to bed, while Sundays I spend my 5-minute breaks cramming as much baby time in as I can. I'm very fortunate to have a wife who is understanding with poker and all that it can entail at times," said Lupo. In his online career, Lupo has amassed over $630,000 in total tournament cashes, but has no plans to put a stop to his day job anytime soon. In fact, Lupo hopes to further his career in the architecture world and use that advancement to increase his poker ventures. Lupo says that in a "perfect world" he will eventually open his own firm and possibly move into property development. As part of the reward for accomplishing that goal, Lupo would have more freedom to travel and play events with family vacations scheduled around the venues. For now, Lupo is doing what he can to make a mark in the major online series going on this month across New Jersey. In a single week span last month, Lupo took down a PartyPoker GSSS event and a PokerStars NJCOOP event for over $20,000 combined. In a few days, Lupo will be making a return trip to the live felt for the first time in what he says is a "while" to play the PokerStars Festival New Jersey Main Event. He may not have any current long-term goals for poker, but for the time being Lupo wants to “keep playing, having fun and making money to help my family.”
  8. Pennsylvania is preparing for a much-anticipated launch of regulated online poker. Once it does, it will make regulated online poker play available to the population a nearly 13 million people that live in the Keystone State. With its population, Pennsylvania will be the largest state to legally offer online poker in the United States, eclipsing that of New Jersey, Nevada, and Delaware, and adding a welcomed boost to the regulated US online poker market. Whether you're an experienced online poker player or someone that's new to the virtual felt, you likely have questions surrounding what to expect when real-money online poker finally becomes live in Pennsylvania. To help provide you with some answers, PocketFives tapped into the community and spoke to those with experience playing online poker in the new regulated landscape. We spoke with some of the top players from New Jersey, where online poker is legal, regulated, and growing. Here's what Michael 'Gags30' Gagliano, Daniel 'centrfieldr' Lupo, Jon 'itsmejon' Borenstein, and 2012 WSOP Main Event champion Greg Merson had to say. What can Pennsylvania players expect when online poker launches in the state? Michael 'Gags30' Gagliano: "Like others, I'm not positive what we'll see, but I think players can expect a nice mix of cash games and tournaments from the various sites. Players need to remember, though: these sites won't be like you remember them from 2011 - they are going to be much smaller. That means fewer games at off-peak hours and less liquidity when it comes to things like sit-n-gos. But this shouldn't' discourage Pennsylvania players. Just because you can't win $100,000 on a Sunday doesn't mean that there won't be good tournaments. Don't let a ‘small' first-place prize turn you off. A smaller field means you have a much higher chance of winning that tournament. So sure, $10,000 isn't as alluring as $100,000, but having a real shot at winning a tournament instead of buying into what can sometimes feel like a lottery ticket is a positive in my book!" Daniel 'centrfieldr' Lupo: "Based upon experiences with New Jersey's intro and when the Nevada merger came on board, there were some initial hiccups around the launch times. So I would recommend signing up early and preparing yourself for some early bumps in the road, such as potential software or geo-location issues, but not to be deterred by them as they tend to be short-lived. But the initial 'bumpy road period' will have its perks, too. I'm assuming (hoping) there will be a number of welcome bonuses, new-player bonuses, welcome freerolls, as well as some sort of initial online tournament series to celebrate the expansion... so signing up early would definitely be to a player's benefit to take advantage of these timely promotions. "I would also recommend that Pennsylvania players make sure they have viable internet connections, and back-up options like some sort of mobile hotspot option, as well as a strong wifi signal which will help alleviate a lot of the early potential geo-location headaches." Jon 'itsmejon' Borenstein: "Pennsylvania players can expect to have a new poker outlet in addition to the many casinos in the Pennsylvania area, which should only help grow the game and draw new players in that wouldn’t otherwise be able to make it to a casino regularly." Greg Merson: "I think when Pennsylvania launches there will be a decent amount of traffic to start, but unfortunately with only approximately 12 million people, I don’t think it will be all that special in the long run." What are the benefits of regulated online poker and why should players in Pennsylvania be excited about it? Gagliano: "The by far biggest benefit of regulated Pennsylvania online poker is safety and peace of mind in playing online poker again. Legal and regulated sites mean that players won't have to worry about having to deposit using cryptocurrencies, or worrying that a site won't pay out their cash-out. It means that players won't have to worry if a site is ‘rigged’ and can come to expect the same level of game security that they get when they play in Pennsylvania brick-and-mortar casinos." Lupo: "Having a regulated site where your money is safe has been a huge peace of mind for me versus playing on unregulated sites, which always give you a sense of worry. Payouts are fast and secure and there are numerous safe deposit options. But overall, the best thing about online poker in my experience has been the convenience of it. With a family, it allows me to be home more, versus spending time in a casino, and work around my family's schedule so I can have dinner with them every night and put the kids to bed. And if you're playing a cash session and just not feeling it, you can comfortably stop playing and do something else, whereas a casino trip has a lot more overhead and commitment time-wise." Borenstein: "It's nice to play online without worrying about shady practice or the sites getting shut down out of nowhere. You know your money is safe. I think that for anyone who is serious about poker or wants to get serious about poker, regulated online sites are a great tool to have as a way to practice and get in exponentially more hands than you would if you were playing live, and being able to do it all from the comfort of your own home." Merson: "The benefits of playing in a regulated industry mean you know your money is safe, the play is secure, and there are no ways for outside countries to VPN the system." With the anticipation of Pennsylvania online poker being very high, what are you most looking forward to when thinking about having Pennsylvania on board for online poker? Gagliano: "The thing I look most forward to with Pennsylvania poker is just another state coming online, thus giving more players in the Northeast a chance to play online poker again. It also brings the U.S. one state closer to allowing everyone the ability to once again play poker from the comfort of their homes." Lupo: "Being primarily a tournament player, it's always nice when the increased player pools can generate larger prize pools. These larger prize pools are like a domino effect and not only encourage players from Pennsylvania to join the action but will also increase the traffic in other states that previously may have been skipping some tournaments due to smaller guarantees than they would like. "I'm also looking forward to a new influx of players. After playing in a small market like New Jersey for the past 4-5 years, some fresh faces would be a welcomed change." Borenstein: "I'm looking forward to increased prize pools, player traffic, and more multi-table tournaments to play each night. I’m also looking forward to what it means to overall growth of online poker in the US. Hopefully, more and more states will follow suit and begin legalizing online poker." Merson: "I actually don’t think Pennsylvania will join the New Jersey pool anytime soon, if at all. This Wire Act issue may cause Nevada to pull out of New Jersey and if that happens I think the hopes of more states joining in are bleak. If they do join, I gladly welcome the liquidity as volume has dropped a good bit in New Jersey over the years."

  10. In what has to go down as one of the crazier days of the 2019 World Series of Poker, four players won bracelets including a Poker Hall of Famer, a New Jersey online poker beast, and two players for whom the bracelet was a long time coming. Meanwhile, Daniel Negreanu got as close to winning his seventh career bracelet as he could possibly get without actually winning it. Joseph Cheong Wins First Bracelet in $1K Double Stack Coming into the final table of the $1,000 Double Stack No Limit Hold'em event, Joseph Cheong's WSOP resume included three runner-up finishes and one rather infamous third place finish, but no wins. That all changed on Wednesday night though. Cheong rode a massive chip stack throughout the final table into the final heads-up confrontation with David Ivers and wasted little time in erasing that '0' next to his bracelet count. The win came with a $687,782 payday, Cheong's second largest WSOP score behind only his third place finish in the 2010 WSOP Main Event. Ivers walked away with $424,791 s the runner-up. "I've played poker so long, it was just another day at work," Cheong said afterwards. This lines with what Cheong said in May 2018, when he said "I’ve never been interested in trophy collecting other than for the fact that first place pays the most money. Also…why a bracelet? Who wants a bracelet? Something cooler might make me want one. I have no interest in any trophy or trinket." Final Table Payouts Joseph Cheong - $687,782 David Ivers - $424,791 Zinan Xu - $314,876 Andrea Buonocore - $235,099 Arianna Son - $176,820 Ido Ashkenazi - $133,970 David Guay - $102,258 Ivan Deyra - $78,638 Brock Wilson - $60,930 David Dibernardi - $47,568 Michael Blake Leads Super Seniors Final 10 Seniors Week in Las Vegas is about to come to an end. On Wednesday, 120 players who managed to make Day 2 of the Super Seniors event were widdled down to just 10. Michael Blake, from Gallup, New Mexico, ended with the chip lead. Kanajett Hathaitham is the player closest to Blake after finishing with 9,235,000. Rick Austin sits third with 6,475,000. CardPlayer Magazine co-owner Barry Shulman sits sixth with 3,665,000. Action resumes at 11 AM PT on Thursday and will play down to a winner. Final 10 Chip Counts Michael Blake - 12,300,000 Kanajett Hathaitham - 9,235,000 Rick Austin - 6,475,000 Jeffrey Miller - 5,525,000 Cary Marshall - 5,500,000 Barry Shulman - 3,665,000 Miles Harris - 3,265,000 Bruce Treitman - 3,254,000 William Davis - 2,755,000 Timothy Joseph - 2,535,000 Ismael Bojang Wins $1,500 PLO for Bracelet #1 Ismael Bojang was starting to enter some dangerous territory. After the money bubble burst on Day 2 of the $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha event, Bojang became the first player to pick up 10 cashes at the 2019 WSOP. It almost moved him into sixth place on the all-time cashes list for players without a bracelet. He's not on that list at all anymore though. Bojang outlasted 1,215 other players to win the $1,500 PLO event, $298,507 and his first gold bracelet on Wednesday night, putting an end to a streak of 71 cashes without a win. “Everybody keeps asking me when I am going to win my first bracelet, I guess I can dodge those questions now,'' Bojang said. Bojang beat James Little heads-up for the title. Little has emerged from relative obscurity in the poker world to pick up eight cashes this summer. The $184,424 runner-up prize is the second largest of his career behind only his win in the World Poker Tour Fallsview Classic in February. Former WPT Player of the Year, Ben Zamani finished third for $131,335. Final Table Payouts Ismael Bojang - $298,507 James Little - $184,424 Benjamin Zamani - $131,335 Johannes Tobbe - $94,669 Denis Bagdasarov - $69,082 Mihai Niste - $51,041 Richard Tuhrim - $38,189 Glen Cressman - $28,940 Matthew Mueller - $22,215 Hennigan Denies Negreanu in $10K Seven Card Stud The final table of the $10,000 Seven Card Stud event was one for the history books. For the first time in WSOP history, two Poker Hall of Fame members battled heads-up for a bracelet. John Hennigan, who was enshrined last summer, defeated Daniel Negreanu heads up to win the sixth bracelet of his career, four of which are Championship events. "It was a very tough duel, especially for me," Hennigan. "(Negreanu) played so well, and I played so poorly, he really did not get what he deserved. He made every right decision and I made every wrong decision, and it was just bad luck for him at the end." Along with the bracelet, Hennigan took home $245,451 for the win. Negreanu walked away with $151,700 and the ninth runner-up finish of his WSOP career. David 'ODB' Baker finished third for $104,416. Russia's Mikhael Semin, the only player the at the final table without a bracelet earned $73,810 for finishing fourth. It's his second $10,000 Championship event final table of the summer. He previously finished sixth in the $10,000 HORSE. Final Table Payouts John Hennigan - $245,451 Daniel Negreanu - $151,700 David 'ODB' Baker - $104,416 Mikhail Semin - $73,810 David Singer - $53,621 Chris Tryba - $40,066 Frank Kassela - $30,817 Frankie O'Dell - $24,419 Adam Lamphere Leads $600 NLHE/PLO Deepstack Final Table Just seven players stand between Adam Lamphere and a WSOP victory in the $600 No Limit Hold'em/Pot Limit Omaha Deepstack event after the Lansing, MI native worked his way into the final table chip lead after outlasting 187 other players on Wednesday. Lamphere bagged up 17,200,000 which puts him ahead of second place Dan Matsuzuki's 14,000,000. Raghav Bansal ended the day with the third biggest stack at 9,300,000.
