  5. Hackensack, New Jersey's Jon itsmejonBorenstein (pictured) has been playing poker since he was 10 years old with his dad. He plays under the handle jetsfanon WSOP.comand itsmejonon Borgata Poker and has over $62,000 in recorded online cashes to date. His accomplishments include a win in the WSOP.com Knockout Series Main Event for $2,175, a win in the WSOP.com Weekend Warm-Up for $2,000, and, in back-to-back weekends, he came in fourth in the WSOP.com $25,000 Guarantee Sunday Major for a combined $3,650. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: When did you start playing poker and why was it appealing? Jon Borenstein: I first was introduced to poker when I was about 10 years old. My father taught me how to play and we would play some weekends. It was always intriguing to me and I loved how much poker incorporated so much more than what you can see on the surface, not to mention I really like the feeling of winning. PocketFives: How many hours do you dedicate to poker per week? Jon Borenstein: I probably play five or six days a week from 7:00pm until whenever my last tournament ends. If it's the WSOP.com 5,000 Guarantee, that can I go until 3:30am. I'm trying to incorporate online cash games into my repertoire also. Those have kind of a steep learning curve. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Jon Borenstein: I'd have to say it's evenly split between WSOP.com and PartyPoker, but leaning toward WSOP.com mainly because I run better there and they have solid structures. PocketFives: Since the launch of regulated online poker in New Jersey, what has been your most memorable cash or win? Jon Borenstein: I think my most memorable win would have to be the WSOP.com Knockout Series Main Event that ran back in August. It was my largest cash on the New Jersey sites where I won $2,175. That was a field of sharks I really respect, so it felt really good to be able to navigate that to a win. PocketFives: Is there anyone who helped change how you approach the game of poker? Jon Borenstein: There are so many people who have helped me, so it's hard to pinpoint just one. I love meeting and absorbing whatever different players have to say. Joining PocketFives has definitely introduced me to a really great network of people, which allows me to bounce ideas off them and improve. Right now, I'm working closely with Jake jtsnakesPerry and Mike Lav519 Lavenburg on elevating my game as far as I can. Want the latest poker headlines and interviews? 10. One of the more desirable aspects of being a professional poker player is that you don't have to have a set schedule. You are, in essence, your own boss. You play when you want, where you want, and travel to and from some of the country's and world's most interesting destinations. Sometimes you win very large sums of money. Over the last two years, New Jersey's Jon 'itsmejon' Borenstein has been doing just that, while also becoming one of his home state's most consistent and profitable online players. Borenstein peaked at #2 in the earliest PocketFives New Jersey rankings update of the new year, but over the next few months we could see him moving up a very different leaderboard. He is taking his online game, literally, worldwide. On Tuesday morning, Borenstein and two other pros from New Jersey will board a plane. Twelve hours later, they'll arrive in Costa Rica. We imagine a few hours later they'll open their laptops and begin what they hope to be a five-month grind that sets them up for successful World Series of Poker campaigns in 2016. Why does a player who has amassed over $350,000 in career live tournament earnings and added nearly another $200,000 in online scores drop everything and move to a country he has never been to before? Where he'll emerge himself into a culture where he, admittedly, speaks "maybe 20 words of Spanish, and that's including numbers"? Partially because he can. Such is the life of a professional poker player, but also because Borenstein isn't the type of person or player who has ever been satisfied. He's always trying to improve, sniff out that next big score and that next big-value tournament. In Costa Rica, he won't have to look very far, as the worldwide sites like PokerStars, Full Tilt, and PartyPoker offer some of the best value you'll find in poker. That might be the biggest reason, as the New Jersey sites don't "fulfill" Borenstein as they once did. "I feel my game has reached its ceiling in the current online market," he said. "I would like to grow and get better, elevate to eventually play the highest stakes. I think this move is the best way for me to do that." He added that "the daily access to massive prize pools" is something he has looked forward to for some time. For someone with as much success as Borenstein over the last year, the expectations will be high, but he knows this move will also come with its fair share of challenges. "The challenge is exciting," he said. "I understand the variance will be higher and all I can do is put in the proper volume, play my best, and hope to get a few breaks in big spots." The soon-to-be poker expat is coming off one of those "big spots," as Borenstein finished sixth in last month's Borgata Winter Poker Open $2 million guaranteed opening event. That final table run earned him just under $90,000 and while Costa Rica was planned months ago, he admitted that score "doesn't hurt." It might have hurt his roommates, though, as there won't be a house golf cart just yet. "I told my roommates that if I won, I was buying golf carts for the house," he explained. "They were probably more upset than I was that I didn't win because who doesn't like personal golf carts?" If all goes according to plan and Borenstein sees the same success he has over the last two years, house golf carts might not be absent for long. His journey to Costa Rica starts Tuesday. Save for a few live events and a potential trip to California, the next time we'll see him back on US soil is the WSOP.
  11. [caption width="640"] JohnnyDrama is the #1 player in New Jersey[/caption] In New Jersey, Mike JohnnnyDrama Haberman, is the top-ranked player as January begins. Haberman has a PLB score of 2,717 points, leading the second-ranked player, Jon itsmejon Borenstein, by 263. Haberman has won five tournaments we track in New Jersey since December 1, the largest of which was worth $3,200 and came by taking down the PartyPoker Daily Major on December 13. He has also recorded almost 30 top-10 finishes since December began. He is the #6 ranked player in the US and won the Borgata Sunday $50K in May 2014 for his largest tracked score to date. In an interview with PocketFives, Haberman shared one of his secrets to success: practice. He told us, "You definitely need to study the game. It's always evolving and, with our small player pools, it's very easy to quickly learn people's tendencies." Borenstein is hot on Haberman's heels. He was ranked #3 in New Jersey in the beginning of December as well as last week and moved up one spot. Half of Borenstein's 120 top-three finishes have been wins. Like Haberman, Borenstein won the Borgata Sunday $50K in 2014 for $9,500 and has multiple wins in the Daily and Weekly Majors on the regulated New Jersey sites. In an interview with PocketFives, Borenstein told us that his father turned him on to poker when he was ten years old. He explained the allure of the game: "It was always intriguing to me and I loved how much poker incorporated so much more than what you can see on the surface, not to mention I really like the feeling of winning." [caption width="640"] 'itsmejon' is the #2 ranked player in New Jersey[/caption] Third place in the Garden State rankings belongs to Keith donnysack Donovan, who moved up two spots this week. He has been on a tear over the last two weeks, winning five MTTs since the winter solstice, including two victories on December 29 for about $2,000 combined. Donovan trails Borenstein by just one PLB Point in the New Jersey rankings. 'ykwon17' is the #4 ranked player in New Jersey, down two spots on the week. He was ranked #5 when December began and since then has piled up five wins, including two this month in the WSOP New Jersey High Roller and PartyPoker $4,000 Guaranteed Turbo. He plays as 'LuckySpewy1' on WSOP.com, Borgata, and 888. [caption width="640"] 'ykwon17' is the #4 ranked player in the Garden State[/caption] Fifth place in New Jersey is 'Mergulas', who was formerly ranked #1 in the state. He was the top dog and he has a PLB score of 2,377 points right now. He won the opening event of the first WSOP.com Winter Poker Classic for $11,200, his largest tracked cash in New Jersey. He emerged victorious in the Borgata Sunday $100K two months later to boot. Finally, we wanted to highlight Steven '7douche' Madara, who moved into the top 20 in the New Jersey rankings this week to #18. He won the Borgata $2,000 Guaranteed Six-Max four days ago, one of three cashes he had on January 3. His largest New Jersey score came in April 2015 after a win in a Spring Poker Series event on WSOP.com for $10,000. Here are the top 10 players in the New Jersey rankings right now along with the PLB score for each: 1. JohnnnyDrama - 2,717.76 points 2. itsmejon - 2,454.75 points 3. donnysack - 2,453.02 points 4. ykwon17 - 2,451.73 points 5. Mergulas - 2,377.34 points 6. Thatgood45 - 2,316.43 points 7. No_Xcape - 2,309.06 points 8. ol muggins - 2,283.91 points 9. Sofcknsickk - 2,272.52 points 10. PocketProfits - 2,177.68 points
  12. [caption width="640"] Jon Borenstein has had many close final table calls and finally earned his breakthrough victory in the WPT500. (WPT photo)[/caption] The fine line between poker immortality and being just another player with a few close calls is rail thin and Jon 'itsmejon' Borenstein can firmly attest to that. In the last few years, Borenstein has put together a strong track record in tournaments with four-figure fields that reached a peak last summer when he finished eighth in the Colossus. The majority of Borenstein’s final table runs have ended in heartbreak as when the equity is at its highest, the deck has found a way to work against him. It looked like the same record was about to play for Borenstein last week at the final table of the WPT500 at Aria. In the first hand of play, Borenstein three-bet shoved over another all-in player with pocket jacks but ran into the aces of Aleksandr Gofman. Down to just five big blinds, Borenstein doubled up the next hand and only two hours later, was the champion in a field of 3,451. Borenstein earned $180,000 for his win and also officially removed the final table monkey from his back. “It didn’t even hit me until a few hours afterward. It feels confirming, it’s why we play the game. It’s what I’ve studied and trained to do for my whole career,” said Borenstein. The win was highly in question after Borenstein lost a large percentage of his stack in the first hand. He says the time that followed was the “longest 10 minutes of his life” and for a moment, it looked like the final table demons would never be exorcised. “It felt like an eternity in my mind, the next 10 minutes. I was saying to myself ‘how does this happen every time?’ I was laughing at that point, it was so unbelievable. It was hard to just not lose my mind and become really tilted. But I got a double up right away, and never looked back.” The WPT500 win is the first major victory for Borenstein and the six-figure score he earned for first place is the largest of his career. The deep tournament runs that Borenstein has made in the past only to fall short at the finish line have stuck with him over time. With all of the spots that have failed him before, Borenstein had some self-doubt but is officially beyond that point with his win. “It’s so easy to get in your own head in poker, especially when you’re going through a downswing or when you keep getting unlucky. You feel like it’s never going to turn around [and] you look at other people and you’re like ‘that just wasn’t meant for me, some people it was meant for’ and that’s not the case. It’s important to stay the course and keep hitting reg. It finally worked out and it doesn’t matter what’s happened in the past.” One year ago, Borenstein’s Colossus final table finish was the best result he had ever achieved but the rest of his WSOP was all downhill from there as he only notched four four-figure payout receipts following then. That perspective gives Borenstein all the more joy in winning the WPT500 as his summer prior to the win was a constant uphill battle. “Last summer, I final tabled the Colossus early and then I had lost the rest of the summer. This time, I lost the entire beginning of the summer and won at the end. You put your body out here every day and it’s a combination of rewarding from everything that led up to it and putting in a full summer’s grind and not giving up, it t feels great.” The WSOP Main Event is already two Day 1 sessions in and Borenstein will be part of tomorrow’s Day 1C field. Borenstein says he is “on top of the world” coming into poker’s biggest event and with a field that will reach close to 7,000 entrants, he is a candidate to be a player who could potentially ride the wave of variance momentum to make a deep run.
  13. Pennsylvania is preparing for a much-anticipated launch of regulated online poker. Once it does, it will make regulated online poker play available to the population a nearly 13 million people that live in the Keystone State. With its population, Pennsylvania will be the largest state to legally offer online poker in the United States, eclipsing that of New Jersey, Nevada, and Delaware, and adding a welcomed boost to the regulated US online poker market. Whether you're an experienced online poker player or someone that's new to the virtual felt, you likely have questions surrounding what to expect when real-money online poker finally becomes live in Pennsylvania. To help provide you with some answers, PocketFives tapped into the community and spoke to those with experience playing online poker in the new regulated landscape. We spoke with some of the top players from New Jersey, where online poker is legal, regulated, and growing. Here's what Michael 'Gags30' Gagliano, Daniel 'centrfieldr' Lupo, Jon 'itsmejon' Borenstein, and 2012 WSOP Main Event champion Greg Merson had to say. What can Pennsylvania players expect when online poker launches in the state? Michael 'Gags30' Gagliano: "Like others, I'm not positive what we'll see, but I think players can expect a nice mix of cash games and tournaments from the various sites. Players need to remember, though: these sites won't be like you remember them from 2011 - they are going to be much smaller. That means fewer games at off-peak hours and less liquidity when it comes to things like sit-n-gos. But this shouldn't' discourage Pennsylvania players. Just because you can't win $100,000 on a Sunday doesn't mean that there won't be good tournaments. Don't let a ‘small' first-place prize turn you off. A smaller field means you have a much higher chance of winning that tournament. So sure, $10,000 isn't as alluring as $100,000, but having a real shot at winning a tournament instead of buying into what can sometimes feel like a lottery ticket is a positive in my book!" Daniel 'centrfieldr' Lupo: "Based upon experiences with New Jersey's intro and when the Nevada merger came on board, there were some initial hiccups around the launch times. So I would recommend signing up early and preparing yourself for some early bumps in the road, such as potential software or geo-location issues, but not to be deterred by them as they tend to be short-lived. But the initial 'bumpy road period' will have its perks, too. I'm assuming (hoping) there will be a number of welcome bonuses, new-player bonuses, welcome freerolls, as well as some sort of initial online tournament series to celebrate the expansion... so signing up early would definitely be to a player's benefit to take advantage of these timely promotions. "I would also recommend that Pennsylvania players make sure they have viable internet connections, and back-up options like some sort of mobile hotspot option, as well as a strong wifi signal which will help alleviate a lot of the early potential geo-location headaches." Jon 'itsmejon' Borenstein: "Pennsylvania players can expect to have a new poker outlet in addition to the many casinos in the Pennsylvania area, which should only help grow the game and draw new players in that wouldn’t otherwise be able to make it to a casino regularly." Greg Merson: "I think when Pennsylvania launches there will be a decent amount of traffic to start, but unfortunately with only approximately 12 million people, I don’t think it will be all that special in the long run." What are the benefits of regulated online poker and why should players in Pennsylvania be excited about it? Gagliano: "The by far biggest benefit of regulated Pennsylvania online poker is safety and peace of mind in playing online poker again. Legal and regulated sites mean that players won't have to worry about having to deposit using cryptocurrencies, or worrying that a site won't pay out their cash-out. It means that players won't have to worry if a site is ‘rigged’ and can come to expect the same level of game security that they get when they play in Pennsylvania brick-and-mortar casinos." Lupo: "Having a regulated site where your money is safe has been a huge peace of mind for me versus playing on unregulated sites, which always give you a sense of worry. Payouts are fast and secure and there are numerous safe deposit options. But overall, the best thing about online poker in my experience has been the convenience of it. With a family, it allows me to be home more, versus spending time in a casino, and work around my family's schedule so I can have dinner with them every night and put the kids to bed. And if you're playing a cash session and just not feeling it, you can comfortably stop playing and do something else, whereas a casino trip has a lot more overhead and commitment time-wise." Borenstein: "It's nice to play online without worrying about shady practice or the sites getting shut down out of nowhere. You know your money is safe. I think that for anyone who is serious about poker or wants to get serious about poker, regulated online sites are a great tool to have as a way to practice and get in exponentially more hands than you would if you were playing live, and being able to do it all from the comfort of your own home." Merson: "The benefits of playing in a regulated industry mean you know your money is safe, the play is secure, and there are no ways for outside countries to VPN the system." With the anticipation of Pennsylvania online poker being very high, what are you most looking forward to when thinking about having Pennsylvania on board for online poker? Gagliano: "The thing I look most forward to with Pennsylvania poker is just another state coming online, thus giving more players in the Northeast a chance to play online poker again. It also brings the U.S. one state closer to allowing everyone the ability to once again play poker from the comfort of their homes." Lupo: "Being primarily a tournament player, it's always nice when the increased player pools can generate larger prize pools. These larger prize pools are like a domino effect and not only encourage players from Pennsylvania to join the action but will also increase the traffic in other states that previously may have been skipping some tournaments due to smaller guarantees than they would like. "I'm also looking forward to a new influx of players. After playing in a small market like New Jersey for the past 4-5 years, some fresh faces would be a welcomed change." Borenstein: "I'm looking forward to increased prize pools, player traffic, and more multi-table tournaments to play each night. I’m also looking forward to what it means to overall growth of online poker in the US. Hopefully, more and more states will follow suit and begin legalizing online poker." Merson: "I actually don’t think Pennsylvania will join the New Jersey pool anytime soon, if at all. This Wire Act issue may cause Nevada to pull out of New Jersey and if that happens I think the hopes of more states joining in are bleak. If they do join, I gladly welcome the liquidity as volume has dropped a good bit in New Jersey over the years."

  16. Over the past few years, there hasn't been a more dominant player in the New Jersey online scene than Yong 'LuckySpewy1' Kwon. He's won a World Series of Poker bracelet, a pair of PokerStars New Jersey Championship of Online Poker titles, and a PokerStars New Jersey Spring Championship of Online Poker title and accumulated more than $3.2 million in earnings. And throughout most of that, he's been the #1-ranked online poker player in the United States. Kwon sits atop the USA rankings again after picking up eight qualifying cashes - four of them wins - in May and then kicking off June with a five-figure win. Kwon's biggest May score came after defeating Chris Moorman heads-up in the $500 buy-in WSOP.com $50,000 Weekly Sunday on May 11 for $22,752 and 285.06 PLB points. He also won the WSOP.com $10,000 daily twice and had three qualifying cashes from the late states of the Spring Online Championships. Trailing Kwon by 283 points, Mike 'Lav519' Lavenburg also had eight qualifying cashes in May including a win the WSOP.com Money May Series Event #92 ($500 Six Max PLO High Roller) where he banked $11,462 and boosted his PLB points total by 217.18. He had a pair of Spring Online Championship final tables as well as another May Series final table. On June 1 he finished 27th in the WSOP.com $100,000 Guaranteed. Rounding out the top three is yet another New Jersey grinder. Jon 'itsmejon' Borenstein is 212 points behind Lavenburg and 495 points behind Kwon. Borenstein started out May on fire adding 659.2 PLB points to his total thanks to four cashes between May 4 and May 6. On May 4 he finished sixth and ninth in a pair of WSOP.com Spring OC events and runner-up in the WSOP.com $50,000 Weekly Sunday. His biggest score of the month came on May 6 when he earned $21,561 and 275.05 PLB points for outlasting 91 other players to ship the $500 Tuesday Showdown. While the rest of the top 10 is populated by players from the Garden State, the top-ranked player from Nevada is James 'prdawg420' Vales. Coming in at #13, Vales is 1,805 points behind Kwon and is only able to collect points on WSOP.com. Vales had 13 qualifying cashes in May, highlighted by a runner-up result from the WSOP.com Tuesday Showdown on May 27 where he added $15,206 to his career earnings and 202.13 PLB points to his total.
