  2. Dan Cooley (pictured), also known as rtheusaon PocketFives, is a very happy camper nowadays. The reason: he can play online poker in New Jersey legally and competitively. Cooley's accomplishments thus far include a second place finish in the Borgata/PartyPoker$50K Guarantee Sunday Major for $6,808. He also finished in second place and third place on two separate occasions in the nightly $10K Guarantee on Borgata/PartyPoker for a total of $3,018. Lastly, Cooley won the Big Sunday $10K Guarantee on 888 Pokerfor $3,000 and recently took down the Ultimate Poker $5K Guarantee for $1,550. PocketFives: What got you started playing online poker? Dan Cooley: When I was 18, I started playing for fun with my cousin Jimmy and, before I knew it, we were playing constantly. The first game I ever played was an 18-person sit and go with my cousin's friends and I ended up coming in seventh, which was a big deal because I made like 5 bucks! I've always been competitive, but was never really good at sports, and suddenly I had an outlet. Also in that sit and go, I lost with A-J to A-10, so it was my first bad beat story. PocketFives: Is there any meaning behind your screen name? Dan Cooley: I have always dreamed of being interviewed by PocketFives and have dreaded the thought of getting asked this question. Here it goes. rtheusa was based off the screen name I used on a "Harry Potter" forum when I was like 14 years old. That's so dorky and I didn't think I would ever share it. As for BrokeArtist, it basically describes my life right now. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Dan Cooley: I would say it's a toss-up between PartyPoker and WSOP.com, although I definitely see the tournament structure at WSOP.com as being the best. I think both of these sites really listen to their clients and take our feedback seriously. Also, the satellites to live events are a huge plus! PocketFives: Since the launch of regulated online poker in New Jersey, what has been your most memorable cash or win? Dan Cooley: I've been very lucky with my early success and hope to have it continue. The most memorable for me would have to be when I chopped the PartyPoker $50K in late January. I was short-stacked that entire tournament. I literally didn't get over 25,000 in chips until there were about four tables left. Even then, it wasn't until right before the final table that I accumulated any chips. So, to be able to chop heads-up was incredible. PocketFives: Is there anyone or anything that helped change how you approach the game? Dan Cooley: PocketFives played a big part in helping me grow as a poker player. Over the last year, the New Jersey pokerforum on PocketFives has helped improve my game immensely. I want to thank my cousin Jimmy (Hoops886 on PocketFives) for pushing me to take this game more seriously and to approach it with a higher level of thinking. PocketFives: Do you play any live poker? Dan Cooley: Not as much as I would like. I was lucky enough to make a deep run in a Borgata Winter Poker Open side event in January. I am definitely hoping to change that over the next year, but with work, it's just not possible now. Want the latest poker headlines and interviews? 4. New Jersey online poker player Mitch Friedberg (money4baconon PocketFives) plays mostly under the name CharlieBrownon Borgata Pokerand WSOP.com. Friedberg has made nine final tables since December. Notable finishes include wins in the WSOP $5K Guarantee in December and February, a second place finish in the WSOP $10K nightly for $2,336, a third place finish in the Borgata/Party $10K Guarantee, and a 10th place finish in the Borgata/Party $100K Guarantee for $1,672. Visit our New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: What got you started playing poker and how long have you been at it? Mitch Friedberg: I was hooked during the poker boom, much like a lot of kids my age. I saw the big names on TV and whenever I came upon poker on TV, I couldn't turn it off. I discovered there were websites where you could play poker online, so I gave it a shot. I started with play money games on random websites and learned the basics. By this time, I was just starting college and ended up joining a fraternity. I got to know one of my brothers and discovered that he never really had a job over the last few years, but rather played online poker on PokerStars as his main source of income. This was about the time I decided to give real money games a shot. I thought, "Hey, if my college drinking buddy can do it, why can't I?" I had a rude awakening. I was not your typical success story that you often read about. I did not make one deposit and never look back. Instead, I made lots of deposits and looked back a lot. I lit student loan refund checks on fire. I had never read a book, blog post, or watched a video about poker. I was a gambler, not a poker player. One day, I actually calculated how much money I had burned on online poker and knew I had to change something. By the time I finally settled down and read a book, I had my first four-figure score. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play on and why? Mitch Friedberg: I play mainly on WSOP.com and Borgata Poker. WSOP was the first site I could successfully geo-locate on and had success on. In the first week of playing, I final tabled the $5K and $10K on WSOP and the $50K Sunday on Borgata. I never really gave the other sites a chance, so I don't have anything good or bad to say about them. However, in an unfortunate series of events, I recently changed my internet service provider from Comcast to Verizon FiOS and am now having geo-location issues on WSOP and Borgata. My IP address appears to be coming from Virginia, which apparently is also an issue for other New Jersey residents that I have spoken to and we have yet to find a fix. I found out that Ultimate Poker seems to be working okay with my new provider, so this might give Ultimate Poker a chance to get some of my business. PocketFives: Is there anyone who helped change how you approach the game? Mitch Friedberg: There are a number of people who helped change the way I think about the game: all of the authors of books I have read, the players on training websites that I have watched hours of video on, and some of my friends. If I had to name a close friend who has helped, I would say Joe (known online to some as PokerGymCoach). I randomly met Joe through a friend at a bar one night when I overheard him talking about poker. We shared some stories and I found out he had played at the WSOP that summer. We became friends, played more poker together, bounced ideas off each other, and before you know it, I had a mini heater and decided to head to Vegas with him to play some events in the 2013 WSOP. There are no big scores to report, sorry guys, maybe this year! PocketFives: Do you play any live poker? Mitch Friedberg: I do, mainly low-stakes cash games and small buy-in tournaments. I cut my teeth at live poker in the small dailies at Bally's and Showboat in Atlantic City when I first turned 21. I haven't had any major live scores, as I only dabble with large buy-in tournaments on special occasions. I had one WSOP Circuit final table last year at Caesars in a $365 ring event where I busted in seventh place for just short of $5,000. I plan to take a few larger live stabs this year, including a possible WSOP Circuit Main Event in Philadelphia and/or New Orleans. If I have some luck there, maybe you'll see me take a stab in the WSOP Main Event! Want the latest poker headlines and interviews? Follow PocketFives on Twitterand Like PocketFives on Facebook. 7. New Jersey online poker is in full swing and, with 100 days of operation under its belt, WSOP.com has released data highlighting the enormous impact that mobile will play in the burgeoning market. The well-known brand, run by Caesars Interactive Entertainment, found that 26% of all play came from mobile devices or tablets, with gamblers spending an average of 43 minutes on Caesars' various online casino websites. Poker players at WSOP.com spent even more time on the site, averaging 76 minutes. The data won't come as a surprise to analysts and executives who have long predicted that mobile devices would play a key role in the industry. "Mobile applications will play an enormous piece of the puzzle in online wagering, which is why we are so positive and see so much upside in the months ahead," saidJoe Lupo, Senior VP of Borgata. While analysts have tempered their online gaming revenue expectations for New Jersey's first year, casino officials say that the current numbers don't take into account the potential for mobile growth, which is only starting to happen. So far, a number of New Jersey casinos offer online poker via mobile apps, including 888 Poker, WSOP.com, PartyPoker, and Borgata Poker (mobile client for Borgata shown below). Operators like the Tropicana, Trump Plaza, and Trump Taj Mahal offer mobile betting on casino table games. One issue hampering growth is cell phone usage. Due to the fact that players must be verified by geo-location software, most mobile apps only allow players to gamble when connected to WiFi. That means players hoping to access sites on the go using 3G or 4G cellular networks will be out of luck for the time being. Lisa Spengler, spokeswoman for the DGE, recently told the Associated Press that the Division is working with geo-location vendors to provide a solution that would allow players to connect through such networks in the future. The trend toward the use of mobile devices in i-gaming is not limited to New Jersey and can be seen in the UK market as well. Gambling operator William Hill recently reported that its mobile betting revenues increased 298% from 2012 to 2013. Paddy Power saw a similar increase in usage, while Betfairhas reported that mobile betting was up 64% year-over-year. Patrick Kennedy, Paddy Power's CEO, believes that 90% of industry growth will come from mobile. With smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices so pervasive, it's easy to see how mobile gaming could see tremendous growth. According to Nielsen, 60% of US mobile subscribers used smartphones as of June 2013. "With tablet growth increasing and smartphone adoption continuing to reach more and more, it is clear the future of the majority of gaming experiences will be on these devices," said Caesars' Seth Palansky. 8. Atlantic City's own Jake schaf4206Schafer (pictured) got hooked on poker during the Moneymaker boom like many other poker players around the world. He has been on a tear in the month of March on the virtual felts in New Jersey, winning the WSOP.com $10,000 Sunday Guarantee on March 9 for $3,500, winning the nightly WSOP $10,000 Guarantee on March 25 for $3,253, and taking second in the WSOP Weekend Warm-Up $5,000 Guarantee on March 29 for $1,350. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: Tell us how you got started in poker. Jake Schafer: I started playing poker in college. There was a big group of us that played cash games all the time at Coastal Carolina University. I think most of us really got interested in the game during the Moneymaker period, as watching poker on ESPN all the time got me really interested in and eventually hooked on poker. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Jake Schafer: I play on WSOP.com the most. I like WSOP's and 888 Poker's software the best. I get disconnected and also have geo-location issues a lot with Borgata Poker, PartyPoker, and Ultimate Poker, so I mainly just play on WSOP.com and 888 for now. PocketFives: What has been your most memorable cash on the New Jersey websites? Jake Schafer: The most memorable win would be shipping the WSOP.com $10,000 Weekly Sunday Guarantee. I have final tabled all of the bigger buy-in tournaments on WSOP, but to close out a win in the Sunday $10,000 Guarantee was very memorable. PocketFives: To what do you attribute your success playing online poker? Jake Schafer: Most my success on New Jersey sites has come from years of playing and having experience with the ups and downs of poker. The more you play and the more hands you see, the better you will be. Reading books on poker helps, but to really get better and improve your game, you need to put in the time and volume. 9. He's back! Brett gankJungblut (pictured) has come out of retirement and can now been seen grinding on several regulated New Jersey online poker sites. A New Jersey native, Jungblut has 23 World Series of Poker cashes and a WSOP bracelet, which he won in 2004 in a $5K Limit Omaha Hi-Lo event for $187,720. He was a former member of the famed "Crew" along with Dutch Boyd and Scott emptyseat88Fischman. Jungblut has over $700,000 in tracked online cashes. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: Tell us your thoughts on the return of regulated online poker to New Jersey. Brett Jungblut: I think it is great that New Jersey has embraced a regulated online poker scene. Hopefully the people in charge can pave the way for other states to follow. The games, when they are going, have been very juicy. PocketFives: What have you been up to since Black Friday? Did you relocate to continue playing poker online? Brett Jungblut: Black Friday was definitely a life-changer for me, as I had been an online player since 1997, when I first started playing on Planet Poker and the screen name Gank was born. It forced me to play more live poker and I spent the past few years in Vegas grinding. Las Vegas, in general, has felt the force of Black Friday; the games are much tougher and very few true fish are around. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Brett Jungblut: PartyPoker is at the top of my list, as they have enough traffic in all areas to satisfy the needs of my ADD. My one piece of advice for all of the sites is to start running more guaranteed tournaments earlier in the day. It is almost impossible to grind until after 6:00pm or so tournament-wise because there are not a lot of MTTs now. PocketFives: Do you plan on playing in the New Jersey Championship of Online Pokeron PartyPoker/Borgata Poker? Gank: Yeah, I plan on playing a few of the events and winning at least one! After party at ProPokerSchool.com! Want the latest poker headlines and interviews? Follow PocketFives on Twitterand Like PocketFives on Facebook. You can also subscribe to our RSS feed.

  13. Bob s.l. halperTaylor (pictured) out of Garwood, New Jersey has had much success in online poker before and after the launch of regulated poker in the Garden State. He has close to $200,000 in recorded cashes online. He finished in third place in the WSOP.comMini Fest Main Event $25,000 Guarantee for $2,250, won the WSOP $5,000 Guarantee for $1,452, and finished in second place in the 888 PokerBig Sunday $10,000 Guarantee for $1,800, among other scores. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sitesto play and why? Bob Taylor: I currently play most of my games on WSOP.com and 888 Poker. I like the software and structure of the tournaments on both sites. I also like Betfair and enjoyed grinding out the small guarantee tournaments on that site just after the launch. PocketFives: What got you started playing poker? How long have you been playing? Bob Taylor: I have been playing poker since I was very young. Growing up, poker was the social activity in my family. Saturday nights often involved my extended family members sitting around a kitchen table playing poker for fun and small profits. Poker games were always going on among my friends; poker keeps me connected to my friends even as our lives have gone in different directions. I still play in regular games with my high school friends and our holiday party is the Festivus Invitational, an all-night poker game that is the highlight of the year. The only disappointment in my poker career is that I am not yet a Festivus champion and my friends always remind me of that fact. My friends began playing online poker in the early 2000s. After watching their success, I started playing in December 2006 in freerolls and soon switched to real money tourneys. I won the first MTT I played on PokerStars and have been part of the online poker community ever since. I got to play regularly against the world's most successful players in MTTs and SNGs until Black Friday sent me back full-time to my career. I am so happy to have the opportunity to play online poker again in New Jersey. PocketFives: To what do you attribute your current online success? Bob Taylor: Once I decided I wanted to improve my game, I studied the game. I reviewed my hand histories and watched training videos. After busting out of my own games, I would pull up a top player's tables and follow their play. I would watch JohnnyBax(pictured) and Annette_15in MTTs or Stevie444or Jorg95 in SNGs to try to understand why they were making certain plays in certain circumstances. After a while, I would try to fit some of these plays into my own game and some of them stuck. PocketFives was a great place to develop my game. Once I gained the courage to start posting hands, I became a better player. The responses within threads would force me to focus on why I made a certain play rather than if I won or lost a hand. I love discussing poker strategy and was glad to find a community on PocketFives that felt the same way. Also, online poker is a solitary experience. It helps to have the support and competition of a community of like-minded people to get through the grind. Want the latest poker headlines and interviews? 16. Bloomfield, New Jersey's own Oliver odi420Dent (pictured), who mostly plays under TheRealOD online, enjoys being able to fire up his computer from the comfort of his own home. He has several final table appearances under his belt. On February 28, he finished third in the WSOP.com$10K Guarantee nightly for $1,021. He made the final table of the WSOP.com $10K Guarantee on two other occasions, finishing fifth and seventh. He once won three tournaments on 888 Poker in the same day for a total of $1,500. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Oliver Dent: So far, I've been pretty partial to 888 and WSOP.com. I really like their lobby layout and software. I was expecting much bigger things from Party/Borgata, but their software and payout structure leave a lot to be desired. PocketFives: What got you started playing online poker? Oliver Dent: Like many others, I had played Five Card Draw and Wild games with my high school friends growing up and always liked playing poker. Then, the Moneymaker boom happened. I got my first player-to-player transfer of $50 from a co-worker on PartyPoker in 2004. I think I ran through about 10 of those before I got really serious and decided to learn what "premium starting hands" were. I read a few chapters in the popular books, but what helped me the most was scouring the internet for the latest information on sites like PocketFives. I have been playing for about 10 years now and credit a lot of my success to watching the PokerStars.tv replays of their biggest games and reading articles and threads on PocketFives. PocketFives: Since the launch of regulated online poker in New Jersey, what has been your biggest cash to date? Oliver Dent: I have punted a bunch of stacks in some big games already, but I have multiple four-figure cashes on WSOP.com. I really don't like to brag because there's always someone better than you. I know it's not a lot of money, but I think my favorite accomplishment so far has to be taking down every 888 Deep Stack offered on one day. PocketFives: To what do you attribute your current online success? Oliver Dent: I have to say that a lot of my success comes from practice. Being a collegiate tennis player, nothing amounts to the practice you get from going out there and competing versus someone better than you. What sucks about poker is that sometimes practice costs you a lot of money. If you don't learn from that practice session, then you're bound to lose a lot of money. 17. New Jerseyregulators have relaxed the geolocation buffer zone, the electronic ring fence erected to ensure that players from outside the state are prohibited from gambling for real money at any of its regulated online casinos. "By allowing us a little bit more flexibility and easing the tolerance in that distance, it made it significantly better in the second and third month," Brian Mattingley, Chief Executive of 888 Holdings, told Philly.com. Initially, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement imposed strict specifications on geolocation providers. The result was a fairly large buffer zone that had the effect of locking out gamblers who were legitimately inside the state. Players logging on near the state's borders along the Hudson and Delaware Rivers were particularly affected. Casinos were quick to comply with such requirements in order to avoid potentially serious fines. "No one can afford to risk that," Tobin Prior, CEO of Ultimate Gaming, told the Associated Press. "We would err on the side of caution." Many of the same geolocation vendors offering their services in New Jersey have also partnered with Nevada's online gaming operators. There, Ultimate Gaming has reportedly set up its ring fence about a mile-and-a-half from the state's borders. But, operators in the geographically smaller and more populous New Jersey don't have such luxury, as creating such a large buffer zone could potentially block a huge swath of the population. Even so, the technology is improving and fewer legitimate gamblers are being locked out in New Jersey. In an interview last month with Online Poker Report, Anna Sainsbury, CEO of GeoComply, said that the company is seeing around a 95% success rate. "We're incredibly pleased with these results, given the benchmark in previous states that went live is significantly lower than that," she said. "However, we know that is little comfort to the 5% that still have problems." For the 5%, the restrictions are extremely frustrating. "The geolocation issues have made New Jersey internet poker an aggravating, miserable experience," said Two Plus Two user "mrmarcon." Others were able to log on, but were constantly booted from the site, potentially forfeiting hands unnecessarily. "If getting disconnected happens to 95% of people who are in New Jersey, why do we have to get tossed off and lose the money that's in the pot," said user "pmestric." "Why punish the players for the site's inability to detect where we're playing from?" In order to verify a user's location, geolocation vendors use four elements: establishing location through WiFi, IP address, a cell phone carrier, and a method to "tie" a cell phone to a player's computer. In order for in-state players to maximize their chances of a successful login, Sainsbury recommends enabling WiFi or using a WiFi adapter, turning off remote desktop programs like LogMeIn, and using a static connection such as your home WiFi network. Regulations don't currently allow operators to accept players using mobile internet connections. With the recent easing of the buffer zone, players can likely expect their connection success rate to be increased even further. "We have worked with the geolocation vendors and casinos to enhance the technology to make it more accurate and reliable and to reduce false negatives," said Kerry Langan, a DGE spokeswoman. As the industry irons out kinks like geolocation issues, analysts expect that the state's casinos will see a welcome boost in traffic and revenue. This week, the DGE released online gambling revenue numbers for February, which showed a 9% increase from January. While poker revenue dropped by 10%, when taking into account the shorter month, the daily average actually increased from $305,195 to $367,857. 18. PocketFiver Jesse No_XcapeElliot (pictured) accomplished quite a feat recently. He made the final table of the Ultimate Poker $20,000 Guarantee Sunday Majorthree weekends in a row in New Jersey. He finished in third, eighth and first for a combined $7,877 in winnings. PocketFives caught up with Elliot to talk about his accomplishment. Check out our New Jersey poker community for more details. PocketFives: Congrats on winning the Ultimate Poker $20,000 Guarantee Sunday Major. How are you feeling about your win and about making the final table three straight Sundays? Jesse Elliot: Thanks! It was nice to finally book a win after reaching the final table two other times and coming up short. I guess the third time is a charm after all. I feel lucky and blessed at the same time. It's a very daunting task to live up to my own expectations, let alone trying to keep up with all of the other great PocketFivers. PocketFives: Making a Sunday Major final table is not easy, but you did it three straight Sundays on Ultimate Poker. Do you stick to the same strategy each time you play? Jesse Elliot: My goal is always the same: make the final table. My strategy is typically player and structure dependent. The fun part is the player aspect; it's like trying to solve a puzzle that's always changing. PocketFives: How tough were the fields? Was any particular Sunday tougher than the others? Jesse Elliot: The fields on Ultimate Poker can be challenging because there are no notes or hand histories. You never get to see a losing showdown, which makes future decisions difficult. The fields are always filled with regs and PocketFivers. The real challenge in any tournament or aspect of life is understanding your own weaknesses and strengths. The rest will fall into place in time. Want the latest poker headlines and interviews? Follow PocketFives on Twitterand Like PocketFives on Facebook. You can also subscribe to our RSS feed.

  20. Jesse Elliot (No_Xcapeon PocketFives, pictured) out of Voorhees, New Jersey once said that when online poker returns to the Garden State, he would make a lot of noise on the tournament scene. Elliot is a man of his word. He has wins in the WSOP.com$10K Guarantee Nightly for $2,895 and Ultimate Poker$5K Guarantee Nightly for $1,550. He once won the 888 Poker $1,500 Guarantee twice in the span of three nights. PocketFives: When did you start playing poker? Jesse Elliot: My roots in poker grew from old school real-time strategy PC games like Red Alert and all of the Warcrafts. I also became heavily interested in poker after I outgrew Magic: The Gathering. If you're going to play a strategy-based game, why not get paid to do it? PocketFives: How many hours do you dedicate to poker each week? Jesse Elliot: I try to get in six hours of play during the week and about 10 hours on Sundays. I typically have between three and four tables open at a time. I only have two open while studying poker material. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Jesse Elliot: My current favorite poker site is Borgata. They have so many great tournaments, but I play on all of the sites simultaneously. WSOP.com used to be my favorite site until they changed the daily tournaments to two-hour rebuy periods. PocketFives: Since the launch of regulated online poker in New Jersey, what has been your most memorable cash or win? Jesse Elliot: I think I'd have to say taking down the $1,500 Deep Stack Daily on 888 Poker twice in three days. It was only about $600 per win, but it's not an easy task to finish first in an MTT, especially two times in three days. PocketFives: To what do you attribute your success playing online poker? Jesse Elliot: I think my online success stems from the ability to play within my bankroll. Another major factor is the PocketFives community and these articles. The community brings out the competitor in me. Reading about all of these great players and what they have accomplished makes you work harder. I am very thankful that we have a place to share our success together. Thank you, Dennis, for this opportunity and everything you do for us. Want the latest poker headlines and interviews? 21. Dewey Tomko(pictured), a three-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner and 2008 Poker Hall of Fame inductee, recently published an editorial in the Press of Atlantic City voicing his concerns about how cheating could have the potential to cause major damage to the newly legalized online poker industry in the US. EDITOR'S NOTE: In May 2014, Tomko said the following about the Press of Atlantic City story: "I have no association whatsoever to anything to do with that. I don't play online poker. I've never played online poker before. Not even once. I don't know anything about it. Why would I say something on something I know nothing about? I don't do that." The veteran poker player's chief concern was the threat of collusion and bots at the tables. "What worries us is well-organized teams of cheaters using hidden technology to steal from novice players now that Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware have gone live with legalized internet poker," he said. While Tomko admitted that collusion by only two players would be easy to find, adding more players to the mix would make detection quite difficult. "Add a fourth colluding cheater and the team can gain a significant edge and, at the same time, make finding them reliably and consistently very difficult," he wrote. Tomko sites Sheldon Adelson's Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling, which recently touted a letter from the FBI to Congress outlining its fears regarding the industry. "Online casinos are vulnerable to a wide array of criminal schemes," it said. "For example, criminals may participate in games with exclusively criminal players to launder criminal proceeds or criminals might intentionally lose a game to a public official in order to effect a bribe payment." In an ad by the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling, the organization even hyperbolically claimed that online poker could be used to finance a 9/11-style attack. Stepping back from the hysteria, though, studies by economist Friedrich Georg Schneider have shown that the online poker industry is "by no means relevant for money laundering." The poker economy is far too small and the fees too high, he said. Opponents of the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling like the Poker Players Alliance have chimed in with the same sentiment. "The notion that licensed and regulated internet poker would be an attractive conduit for terrorism financing is, on its face, laughable," said John Pappas (pictured), director of the organization. "There isn't a shred of evidence to support this, except for far-fetched claims manufactured by this coalition." Tomko's apprehension is not meant to say that he is against the regulation of online poker in the US. "While we fully support the legalization of internet poker, we urge regulators and poker website operators to take every possible measure to ensure the integrity of the game is never compromised, nor in question," he said. "Anything less risks bringing dishonor to the game that has been so much a part of our lives." For their part, regulators have implemented strict rules and penalties that casinos must follow regarding cheating and collusion. "The casino licensee shall have an internet gaming manager responsible for the operation and integrity of internet gaming and reviewing all reports of suspicious behavior," states the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement on its website. "The internet manager shall immediately notify the division upon detecting any person… engaging in or who is reasonably suspected of cheating, theft, embezzlement, collusion, money-laundering, or any other illegal activities," it continues. For those caught in the act, the penalties can be harsh and mirror brick-and-mortar property policies in Nevada and New Jersey. The threat of jail time will likely make potential cheaters think twice, unlike at an unregulated poker site where the only punishment could be to ban the player's account. The Hall of Famer urges regulators to perform "stress tests" in order to ensure the newly operational poker sites are safe for new players. "Online poker relies on large player pools with many newcomers," he said. "The loss of trust of novice players will be damaging to the entire industry."
  22. On Sunday, March 16, Anthony Cofone (Parmakeron PocketFives) from Oakland, New Jersey outlasted a field of 342 players to win the Party/Borgata $50,000 Guarantee Sunday Major. He took home a cool $12,021 for his efforts. Cofone, who is new to the PocketFives community, also had a deep run in the Party/Borgata $100K Guarantee on March 2, finishing 71st out of 786 players, banking $712. PocketFives: Congrats on your win in the Party/Borgata $50K. Tell us how you're feeling. Anthony Cofone: I hate to answer this like everyone else has, but it's true about feeling numb and it will take days to set in. PocketFives: Do any hands from the $50K stick out to you? Anthony Cofone: There is one hand I didn't play well. It was a non-premium hand played out of position, which left me crippled with 6,300 in chips. We were several hours deep in the tournament with over 3 million chips in play and the average stack of almost 40,000 with 83 players left. Of course, I will always remember the winning hand, calling an all-in bet heads-up pre-flop with 6-6. PocketFives: Do you play on any New Jersey online poker rooms other than PartyPoker and Borgata Poker? Anthony Cofone: I also play on WSOP.comand 888 Poker if there is any sit and go action or a good tournament going on. The graphics are great and truth be told, I love the "Throw Item" feature on 888. I think it is great to throw an egg or snowball at someone who makes you make a hard fold or lays a bad beat on you. I even like when they throw stuff at me. PocketFives: What have your friends and family said about the win? Anthony Cofone: Everyone is very excited and happy for me. Almost as good as winning was getting to have my cousin Joey sitting next to me for the final seven hours. He is the best rail you can have. My wife June has not only been supportive, but also downright encouraging of my poker and I thank her for that. PocketFives: How did you get started in poker originally and why was it appealing? Anthony Cofone: I grew up in the 60s and 70s in a family and neighborhood where it seamed like everyone played cards. My mom, dad, and I shared a two-family house with my grandparents and uncles. The men mostly played gin. My grandmother, Daisy, ran a $0.05/$0.10 poker game for the ladies in the neighborhood. My first memory of playing poker was at 13. We would play after mass on Sunday at Mrs. Trisolini's house for pennies. I started to play Texas Hold'em eight years ago on a PlayStation WSOP game before depositing on Full Tilt and PokerStars until Black Friday. I love the pure game of tournament poker, love playing live at Borgata, and hope to make it out to the World Series again soon. Want the latest poker headlines and interviews?
