  1. PocketFives member Aleksey NaluneabezshapkiShestyan (pictured, ranked #43 in New Jersey) was a chess player who converted to playing poker while working as a lifeguard during the summer. Shestyan plays under the handles PilarIsTripping on PartyPoker, PilarIsToughon 888, and PilarIsBack on WSOP. Not only does Aleksey grind on the virtual felts in New Jersey, but he also offers poker coaching for cash games, sit and gos, and MTTs. With over $50,000 in tracked online cashes, some of his notable scores include a win in the 888 Big Sunday $10,000 Guarantee for $3,000, a win in the WSOP $5,000 Guarantee for $1,426, and two win in the 888 High Roller $2,000 Guarantee for a combined $1,687. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: What got you started playing online poker? Aleksey Shestyan: My friends got me into poker when I was younger. I couldn't get any chess competition, so when I kept asking for a chess opponent, I inevitably ended up with quite a few poker foes instead. I used to lifeguard during the summer and after I closed the pool, my friends and I would go play a tournament or a nickel, dime cash game. I won my first tournament like that, purely on luck because I wasn't good nor did I know what I was doing. One time I won more cigarettes than I knew what to do with, so I just gave them all back, and another time we lost track of time playing cash outside and saw the sun come up. PocketFives: Is there any meaning behind your screen name? Aleksey Shestyan: My PocketFives user name loosely translates from Russian to "arriving to the moon without your hat." As for my New Jersey screen names, the character Pilar is one of my favorites in fictional literature, from Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls." I've seen some good original screen names recently and one of my favorites is a player on WSOP named DTD. I still can't help but laugh every time I read it. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Aleksey Shestyan: I was an Ultimate Poker regular for a while. I liked their basic software and customer support; the reps were top-notch. I would clear bonuses and play in the overlay tournaments. Nowadays, I play mainly on WSOP. I play their rebuys because of the low rake. I think the New Jersey sites have a ways to go in improving the quality of games they offer, but for interstate operation I believe they're doing a decent job. PocketFives: Since the launch of regulated online poker in New Jersey, what has been your most memorable cash or win? Aleksey Shestyan: Probably my favorite tournament win was winning the 888 Big Sunday $10,000 Guarantee. I had to get past Stephen sizzlinbetta Reynolds to do it and it was kind of exciting for me going up against a player like that. PocketFives: Is there anyone or anything that helped change how you approach the game? Aleksey Shestyan: Yeah, I read what the best players are putting out there like Phil Galfond and Chris Moorman1 Moorman. The cool thing with poker is that it's not a static game like chess; it's very dynamic. Your best play really just depends on your valuation of what your opponent is doing, and a response. PocketFives: Do you play any live poker? Aleksey Shestyan: No, I don't. Not nearly enough. One of my goals is to play a lot more. I believe sizzlinbetta had a good article on the issues with grinding online in New Jersey, like you have to be creative because the rake isn't that low and the field is tough and full of good players.

  5. PocketFives had the opportunity to catch up with North Bergen's Christian ChinIAM Soto (pictured), who is a poker coach over at Redchippoker.com and a co-author of the poker book "Late Position," which talks about a collection of hands played from the button, cutoff, and hijack and discusses important concepts. Soto came up playing the underground poker scene in New York and today spends most of his time at Borgata and Parx. ESPN introduced him to the game of poker during one of its broadcasts and has contributed to his professional poker career. Primarily a cash game player, he has found himself shifting more towards tournament poker as of late on the regulated sites in New Jersey. Some of his notable cashes include a win in the 888 Poker/WSOP $5,000 Guarantee, a win in the network's New Jersey High-Roller $2,000 Guarantee, and a second place finish in the 888/WSOP $10,000 Guarantee for a total of $5,195. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: Give us your thoughts and experiences of regulated online poker in New Jersey. Christian Soto: I think what is going on here in New Jersey in terms of online poker is phenomenal. Obviously, there is still work to be done and improvements will come once we can share player pools with other states. However, being able to play a $50,000 guarantee poker tournament on a Sunday is a long ways away from where we were a few years ago. That is something all of us, including the legislature, should feel proud of. PocketFives: Is there any meaning behind your screen name? Christian Soto: My first name is Christian. However, I dislike when people call me Chris. This is because eventually they forget my name and call me Christopher. One night on the poker table, my friends came up with calling me by the second syllable in my name, Christian, which sounds like "Chin." The nickname "Chin" stuck, so ChinIAM it is. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play on and why? Christian Soto: WSOP, in my opinion, has the best software and daily MTT schedule offered right now. However, I think PartyPoker is great for the cash game players, as it seems that is whom they chose to cater to most, while WSOP took the MTT route. PocketFives: How did you get started in poker originally? Why was it appealing? Christian Soto: I was always an avid sports fan. One night, I saw poker on ESPN and it appealed to me. It was much more fun to watch at that time, however, because of the characters involved in the game at the time. Today, it's a lot more analytical, which caters to players like me, but that may outcast a different demographic. However, I think the networks are attempting to find a way to a make both the pros and casual players happy with the current broadcasts. PocketFives: To what do you attribute your current online success? Christian Soto: I've had a hot start and my numbers are nothing like I could have envisioned. With that said, I wouldn't call this a success just yet. They are players in this player pool who have had great numbers through an extended period of time. I'm going to continue to work hard off the table and attempt to put in the volume. PocketFives: Since the launch of regulated online poker in New Jersey, what has been your most memorable cash or win? Christian Soto: It wasn't even one of my biggest cashes in terms of dollar amounts, but my most meaningful win was in a High Roller on WSOP in March when I first started playing MTTs. I needed that for my confidence. Given that the High Rollers have some of the toughest players, I thought if I won that, I could hang. PocketFives: What do you do away from poker? Christian Soto: I've been going to the gym a lot more often. I need to because I'm out of shape or at least not in the shape I desire to be in. It's also a good stress relief from poker and life. I'm also a big foodie, so I enjoy going to new restaurants and trying different foods. If you have any restaurant recommendations, definitely ship them my way. PocketFives: Can you tell us about your training site? Christian Soto: A little over a year ago, I founded my training site, RedChipPoker.com, with three partners. One of them is Ed Miller, who makes training material for cash games. Today, we have a diverse group of great players making content. Jonathan FieryJustice Little is on the roster making tournament videos. We have mental game material and even some Pineapple Open Face Chinese content. There is no shortage. Also on the roster is Andrew Brokos, who is the voice of the "Thinking Poker Podcast" and also owns Tournament Poker Edge. I did an interview series for our members where I interviewed players I found interesting in the game and asked them everything from strategy to lifestyle. Bart Hanson, Matt berkey11 Berkey, and Jonathan Little were some of the players I interviewed. Most importantly, I'm most proud of the community we have built. It's hands-down the friendliest poker community around. It's a culture we have built and plan to maintain and anyone is welcome to join.
  6. If you play on WSOP.com in Nevada or New Jersey, then you'll be interested to hear the thoughts of Bill Rini (pictured), the site's Head of Online Poker and longtime friend of our online poker community. With word that WSOP.com will be running plenty of qualifiers for this year's World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, hosting an on-site Grind Room at the Rio, and allowing cage deposits, we wanted to catch up with Rini to talk about the New Jersey and Nevada markets and educating the general public. Sign up for WSOP.com Nevadaand sign up for WSOP.com New Jersey. PocketFives: Thank you for joining us. WSOP.com has been awarding a ton of WSOP seats so far via satellites and we understand a lot more will be up for grabs. Bill Rini: The response has been good. We plan on awarding seats throughout the WSOP. We'll have at least one qualifier every day during the WSOP for the next day's event. Every evening, you can go on and try to take a shot at the next day's event. We'll start with the Casino Employees' event and run it throughout the entire WSOP. PocketFives: What are your overall expectations for the Nevada market in 2014? Bill Rini: I don't think anyone knew how to size our market correctly, so that's why some of the revenue estimates didn't pan out. We have seen where the market is and are trying to expand it. We're happy with the way things are playing out, though. The market expected everything to be a big explosion like it was in 2006, but I don't think we ever saw it like that. Instead, we saw things as being gradual. It's hard after everyone got scared away from the poker market in 2006 and 2011 to tell them it's regulated now and they should come back and play. We knew there would be a ramp-up period for people to regain confidence in the industry. PocketFives: Talk about the process of educating the general public about regulated online poker. Bill Rini: There is going to be a ramp-up period in the US unless there's some Chris Moneymaker-like event that happens. We plan on being here 20 years from now and are looking long-term. This industry changes way too much to set any expectations about the future. We went from one of the first regulated online poker rooms in the US to having signed compacts in less than a year here in Nevada. PocketFives: Speaking of the compact between Delaware and Nevada, we heard it could launch this summer. What can you tell us about a timeline? Bill Rini: The biggest obstacle for the compact is that there aren't any poker rooms to share the liquidity. 888 is running the poker in Delaware, but has not launched one of their brands in Nevada yet. That would need to happen first. Two companies would need to share a backend system in order to work together. There are a lot of technical issues that haven't been worked out. PocketFives: One of the main obstacles to liquidity in Nevada and New Jersey has been geo-locating players and having successful deposits. Has that learning curve lessened? Bill Rini: Geo-location is a technology that's constantly improving and the regulators are becoming more comfortable with making tweaks here and there that improve the customer experience. You have regulators being overly cautions about making sure people from outside those states don't play. I think the geo-location is fairly good, it's improving, and there are more vendors entering the market that handle it. You'll have an issue with depositing until all banks get on board with processing. Some banks just don't want to facilitate those transactions right now. Many banks have been receptive to the message, but banks don't always move at the same pace as gaming. For them, they are accepting a level of risk. It ends up being a cash transaction and they are trying to figure out how to manage that risk. PocketFives: Are there any software updates planned for WSOP.com? Bill Rini: We have a few things going on, a lot of which are behind-the-scenes things like allowing for cage deposits and withdrawals and emigrating some of the features and technology we have in New Jersey that we weren't able to update during the trial phase in Nevada. During the summer, there will be an update to the backend to bring it up to speed with what we have in New Jersey. Want the latest poker headlines and interviews? 8. PocketFives had the opportunity to catch up with longtime member Chris cjd45021Daniels (pictured), who resides in Westville, New Jersey. A member with PocketFives since 2006, Daniels has over $150,000 in tracked online cashes. He recently quit his 9-5 job to pursue a full-time poker career. Some of his notable success include a win in the WSOP.com$10,000 Guarantee for $2,764, a win in the Ultimate Poker $20,000 Guarantee for $6,200, and a win in the WSOP.com $5,000 Guarantee for $1,499. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: Give us your thoughts and experiences of regulated online poker in New Jersey. Chris Daniels: Like everyone else, I wish it would expand to other states, but that's only a matter of time. I clearly wish the guarantees were bigger, but I'll honestly take what I can get right now. I haven't been able to play as much as everyone else, but it feels good to finally be back playing full-time. Unfortunately, when I was working I had zero time for poker. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Chris Daniels: I would have to say WSOP.com given that is the first site I made my deposit on and had success immediately. I love the setup Ultimate Poker has, but unfortunately they don't offer much anymore for New Jersey players, which I believe will change. PocketFives: What got you started playing online poker? Chris Daniels: Like everyone else in New Jersey, I started around the Chris Moneymaker boom. In high school, I began throwing $50 at a time onto Absolute Poker. I started playing small tournaments, mostly $5 sit and gos. I was known as the super aggressive person at every home game. I fared pretty well and would win myself beer money for the weekend. PocketFives: Is there anyone who helped change how you approach the game of poker? Chris Daniels: Not really. I kind of taught myself everything at the time. Now, I have some players I talk strategy with and go over lots of hands with like BiggDaddyand Bigmike22. Those two have helped me a ton getting the PLO game down. PocketFives: How many hours a week do you dedicate to playing poker? Chris Daniels: I like to try to force myself to play five days a week right now because I set some personal goals that I would like to accomplish by the end of the year. My sessions usually go from 7pm to 3am; it depends how I do in late-night tournaments.

  12. PocketFives had the opportunity to sit down with Edward Eddiegood86 Espino (pictured, ranked 56th in New Jersey), who started out in the professional video gaming world and quickly transitioned over to playing poker. He would spend endless nights playing cash games, which usually ended in losing sessions, but he used his drive and determination to keep motivating himself to get better at the game. With over $144,000 in tracked online cashes, his bread and butter tournament is the 888 PokerBig Sunday $10,000 Guarantee where he has two wins, a second and a third for a total of $10,589. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: How did you get started in poker originally? Edward Espino: I use to play video games for a living, fighting games such as Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken. I would be at my local arcade on a daily basis. One day, kids went over to play poker over someone's house. I had never touched cards before that day and after four hours of playing 25/50 cent No Limit Hold'em, I was hooked. I then was donating all of my paychecks to these guys for maybe six months. I sure wish I knew bankroll management then! PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play on and why? Edward Espino: 888 Poker! I never have had anything negative to say about them except one issue, but that was partially my fault. I'm not a big fan of rebuy tournaments, but they do have ways to get into their Sunday main event for $1! I find that hard to beat. The other sites don't have satellites like that on a daily basis. I don't even want to get started on other sites' customer support. PocketFives: What has been your most memorable cash or win on the New Jersey sites? Edward Espino: The Big Sunday $10,000 Guarantee on 888. Over Labor Day weekend of 2014, I took it down for $4,225. I didn't believe it at first because I had not made a score like that in maybe four years. The following week, I took second in the same tournament. The week after that, I took third. This tournament I want to say I take great pride in. It brought me back to life in the poker world. PocketFives: How many hours do you dedicate to poker a week? Edward Espino: As much as I can. I would play all seven days a week if I felt up to it. However, I won't force myself to play anymore. The regulars I see online are on every day. Much respect to them, but I need at least one day of rest when I get two-outed five times in a span of three hours. It's not always fun and definitely can kick your momentum down. The next two months is all poker every day until a six- or decent five-figure hit is done. WSOP in Vegas is the best time to make money for any player. PocketFives: Is there anyone who helped change how you approach the game of poker? Edward Espino: Yes, losing! I don't remember where I read or heard it from, but the words were "In order to learn to win a lot, you must learn to lose a lot." Sadly enough, that made sense to me. I have definitely lost hundreds or possibly thousands in my teen years. As far as anyone helping me, yes. Everyone comes across plenty of great players. I just try to absorb their profitable features and blend them in with my game. PocketFives: What do you do away from poker? Edward Espino: I hang out with my friends from grade school. I've known them for over 20 years and none of them plays poker, so it's great. They know nothing of the game and I don't have to hear some poker terminology or joke about a bad beat story every five minutes. Besides that, I am trying to map out a list of places to travel to. I do, however, need to make a big score to make this happen. I know it's all in due time.
  13. PocketFives had the opportunity to catch up with Will Billson Gallagher (pictured, ranked 14th in New Jersey), who has been playing online poker since 2007 while also playing live at Delaware Park Casino while attending the University of Delaware. When not going to classes or playing at the casino, Gallagher got a part-time job running poker games for a bar league. With close to $70,000 in tracked online cashes, some of his notable accomplishments include a win in the PartyPoker/Borgata $50,000 Guarantee, a win in an NJCOP $40,000 Guarantee, and a win in the 888 Poker/WSOP $10,000 Guarantee for a combined $16,294. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: When did you start playing pokerand why was it appealing? Will Gallagher: I started playing with friends in high school in the occasional home game and watched poker on TV. Around the same time, my cousin was playing on PokerStars and making some decent money. So, when I went to college in 2007, I started playing online too, but was basically giving away $25 to $50 at a time because it was just for fun and I was not very concerned about being good. I finally got sick of losing around January 2011 and decided to try to improve my game. The Monday before Black Friday, I took third in a $3.30 rebuy on Full Tilt for $1,700 and had a brief few days of delusion thinking things were moving in the right direction. In the aftermath of that, I was lucky to be going to the University of Delaware, which is 10 minutes from Delaware Park. So, I got a part-time job running games for a bar poker league and began playing the daily $65 tournaments at Delaware Park regularly. After college, I could not find a job, so I started painting houses and playing poker when I could. Over time, it gradually became more poker and less painting. Ultimately, I began playing poker because it was fascinating to me and still play poker because I love to play. PocketFives: How many hours do you dedicate to poker each week? Will Gallagher: Since the beginning of this year, I have really been grinding a lot online. It depends if there is a series going on. Right now, I am playing almost every night, but when there is not a series going, I generally play four or five days a week. On average, I probably play 30 to 40 hours per week. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Will Gallagher: I had a lot of issues with geo-location initially, so I only really started playing a lot in January of this year. I like the variety on WSOP better, but I prefer freezeouts to rebuys, so I like the daily majors on Borgata a bit more. I have traditionally run well on Borgata as well, but I just started running well on WSOP too. I also like 888 for some of their smaller buy-ins and actually suggest my friends check that out first if they are interested in learning poker. PocketFives: Since the launch of regulated online poker in New Jersey, what has been your most memorable cash or win? Will Gallagher: I have had all of my top eight online cashes in the last two months, so it has been an exciting time in general. While chopping the PartyPoker/Borgata $50K on June 7th was nice, I think the most memorable cash was in the $1,000 buy-in High Roller during the NJCOP. I was not going to play it, but then I knocked out two people in the $500 Bounty to freeroll that tourney. I looked in the lobby of the $1K and there were 20 left, 12 getting paid, at the 500/1,000 level. I decided to hop in for the 10 bb to take a shot at the $20,000 up top. I ended up doubling a few times and busting in ninth for $3,600. It was terrible bankroll management, but not bad for only playing in that tournament for about an hour. PocketFives: Is there anyone or anything that helped change how you approach the game? Will Gallagher: Volume has really helped in terms of my actual play. Having that "been there, done that" feeling is nice when you are getting into the business end of a big tourney. Some friends, including Justin PocketProfitsWong and Scott "SBlast2711" Blumstein, have been very supportive. Seeing their successes online has inspired me to play more and focus more. Also, being strategy agnostic, I am willing to try new things and gauge their impact relative to my game. I am currently a month into an old school 3x opening experiment and am loving the results so far, but now that I just told everyone what I'm up to, maybe it's time to mix it up and switch back to the min-raise. PocketFives: What do you do away from poker? What else interests you? Will Gallagher: I am currently working for a Battery Storage startup company and do not get paid. I'm grinding for equity right now. I am going to the FireFly Music Festival next Thursday for the long weekend. I love playing chess, although I only began playing as an adult. I lived in Germany for a year during college, so I speak German and have been wanting to go back for a visit, probably to Berlin. With my recent run good, maybe it will happen sooner rather than later!
  14. PocketFives had the opportunity to catch up with Sergio svigano Vigano (pictured, ranked 145th in New Jersey), who was born and raised in Brazil, but has found a home in Marlton, New Jersey. Vigano's poker journey started out as a dealer in 2010 in a Florida casino, which eventually led to him playing Limit Hold'em. As time passed, he got into No Limit Hold'em and has improved year after year. He did not venture into online poker until post-Black Friday. With close to $300,000 in live and online cashes, some of his notable accomplishments include a fifth place finish in the 888 Poker/WSOP $35,000 Guarantee for $2,479, a third place finish in the PartyPoker/Borgata GSSS $20,000 Guarantee for $2,136, and a win in the 2014 WPT Borgata Open for $168,875. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: Give us your thoughts and experiences of regulated online poker in New Jersey. Sergio Vigano: I don't have much experience in online poker at all. I started playing online poker after Black Friday, so being able to play online poker in New Jersey has really helped me improve my game. I hope we can continue doing so with improvements and extending it throughout the US in the near future instead of being "shut down" once again by authorities. I would go even further and hope that New Jersey can get more sites joining us in the next couple of years, but honestly I don't see that happening and would love to be dead wrong. Money does talk, sad but true. PocketFives: How did you get started in poker originally? Why was it appealing? Sergio Vigano: I started getting involved in poker when I decided to become a poker dealer at the end of 2010. I still remember my first time in a poker room at the Isle Casino in Florida where I went to observe dealers. The game was $2/$4 Limit Hold'em, I got my first hand dealt, pulled the cards all the way to my chest, and the whole table was yelling at me while the dealer immediately began to explain the situation. I find quite a few things appealing about poker. It is a "people's game," which means you have to pay attention to their behaviors, try to read them at all times, adjust my game accordingly, and, like everything else in life, poker needs a balance by all means. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play on and why? Sergio Vigano: I like them all. I guess I am just happy to be able to play online from my home. I prefer WSOP's software besides of the fact that I run a lot better there than on the other sites. PocketFives: How many hours do you dedicate to poker a week? Sergio Vigano: I have never really paid much attention to it, but I would say it averages around 35 hours per week lately, playing and/or studying. But when I go play live tournaments, that number can get up to 60. PocketFives: Is there anyone who helped change how you approach the game of poker? Sergio Vigano: I don't think there is anyone in particular. Like I mentioned before, I believe in balancing my game. Therefore, I try to get good things from all kinds of good players: loose/aggressive, tight/solid, nit, etc. PocketFives: Do you feel online poker has helped improve your live game? Sergio Vigano: Absolutely! Being able to play online every single day is a huge way to keep improving my game in certain aspects that I can still use in a live game. It helps my overall game from getting stagnant considering that not every day I can make it to a casino to play a decent live tournament. PocketFives: What do you do away from poker? What else interests you? Sergio Vigano: When I am not playing, most of my time I spend with my eight-year-old going to parks, sports practice/games, playing Xbox, going to the movies, etc. I enjoy listening to music, traveling, animals, going to the movies at 12:00pm to watch "what I wish," and the simple things in life like chatting with friends even when it has to be on FaceTime while having a beer. Spend more time with your loved ones, people!
  15. Hackensack, New Jersey's Jon itsmejonBorenstein (pictured) has been playing poker since he was 10 years old with his dad. He plays under the handle jetsfanon WSOP.comand itsmejonon Borgata Poker and has over $62,000 in recorded online cashes to date. His accomplishments include a win in the WSOP.com Knockout Series Main Event for $2,175, a win in the WSOP.com Weekend Warm-Up for $2,000, and, in back-to-back weekends, he came in fourth in the WSOP.com $25,000 Guarantee Sunday Major for a combined $3,650. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: When did you start playing poker and why was it appealing? Jon Borenstein: I first was introduced to poker when I was about 10 years old. My father taught me how to play and we would play some weekends. It was always intriguing to me and I loved how much poker incorporated so much more than what you can see on the surface, not to mention I really like the feeling of winning. PocketFives: How many hours do you dedicate to poker per week? Jon Borenstein: I probably play five or six days a week from 7:00pm until whenever my last tournament ends. If it's the WSOP.com 5,000 Guarantee, that can I go until 3:30am. I'm trying to incorporate online cash games into my repertoire also. Those have kind of a steep learning curve. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Jon Borenstein: I'd have to say it's evenly split between WSOP.com and PartyPoker, but leaning toward WSOP.com mainly because I run better there and they have solid structures. PocketFives: Since the launch of regulated online poker in New Jersey, what has been your most memorable cash or win? Jon Borenstein: I think my most memorable win would have to be the WSOP.com Knockout Series Main Event that ran back in August. It was my largest cash on the New Jersey sites where I won $2,175. That was a field of sharks I really respect, so it felt really good to be able to navigate that to a win. PocketFives: Is there anyone who helped change how you approach the game of poker? Jon Borenstein: There are so many people who have helped me, so it's hard to pinpoint just one. I love meeting and absorbing whatever different players have to say. Joining PocketFives has definitely introduced me to a really great network of people, which allows me to bounce ideas off them and improve. Right now, I'm working closely with Jake jtsnakesPerry and Mike Lav519 Lavenburg on elevating my game as far as I can. Want the latest poker headlines and interviews? 17. The Borgata Fall Poker Open is currently taking place in Atlantic City at the Borgata Hotel and Spa through November 21. PocketFives caught up with one of its own members and Event #4 champion, Jake jtsnakesPerry (pictured, image courtesy of Borgata blog), which was a $560 buy-in two-day event that attracted 207 entrants for a prize pool of $103,500. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. As of late, Perry has been on a tear on the live poker scene, as back in October, he finished second in the Parx Big Stax Main Event for his largest live score of $68,501, bringing him to over $100,000 in winnings in less than a month. Here were the final results of this tournament as reported by Borgata: 1. JACOB PERRY - $28,107 2. DAVID GERASSI - $16,565 3. EDGAR LEMUS-ARGUETA - $9,538 4. ROBERT CAMPION - $7,730 5. ANDREA SALAMONE - $6,024 6. PETER EADICICCO - $5,020 7. JEREMY BARNETT - $4,016 8. JOSEPH GALAZZO - $3,012 9. KEVIN CHANG - $2,008 10. TIMOTHY JOHN STONE - $1,30 PocketFives: Congrats on your win in Event #4 the Borgata Fall Poker Open for $28,207. Tell us how you are feeling and what this win means to you. Jake Perry: I was more relieved than anything. Shipping a live tournament is something that has avoided me for a long time. At the end of the day, it is just money and it is time to go back to work the next day. What it really meant to me: I should not have played the next day because I punted a decent stack because I was tired of poker from the day before. PocketFives: Back in October, you finished second in the Parx Big Stax Main Event for $68,501. Which tournament field did you feel was tougher to navigate? Jake Perry: Parx was piles tougher. If you go back to the final 40 of the Parx event, it was a sick, sick field. Looking at Borgata, I only know a couple of names of the people that cashed. Like all tournaments, though, there were different challenges. PocketFives: Do any hands from the Borgata Fall Poker Open win stick out? Jake Perry: There were a couple of big swing hands at the final table. I got in 9-9 vs A-To to double up about eight-handed, which put me just below average but was a huge confidence-builder. Seven-handed, I got another double with A-J vs A-T, which put me in the virtual chip lead. One hand sticks out from Level 4 of Day 1, actually. I got A-A and a super-agro guy did not pile in A-K for any more money. That was the second worst beat I took the whole tournament. PocketFives: Do you have any plans for the money? Jake Perry: Not really. I may take a vacation in January, but only if it does not conflict with anything I want to play. My real plan is to continue putting more money on top of that money. I would like to repeat this process as often as possible. PocketFives: What have your friends and family said about the win? Jake Perry: The standard congratulations. I have made consistent money in this game for a long time, so I can't really say anyone was shocked. PocketFives: To what do you attribute your current success in the live arena? Jake Perry: Live or online, my game has hit another level thanks to Mike Gags30Gagliano and Mike Lav519 Lavenberg. Opening things up and realizing that I am much better post-flop than I thought I was has helped and with the knowledge I have of that, I have been able to play a slightly more aggressive pre-flop style. And obviously I am going to run better with fedora magic on the rail.

  20. George Cicak (Cicakmanon PocketFives, pictured) out of Bloomfield, New Jersey plays under the handle Glytterpysson PartyPoker and grinds online just about every day. Cicak has over $40,000 in tracked online cashes and is currently 13th in PocketFives' New Jersey online poker rankings. In the New Jersey Championship of Online poker that ran on Borgata Poker and PartyPoker in April, Cicak finished in second place in the $530 buy-in, $30,000 Guarantee High Roller Event for $23,100. He also had a win in the Party/Borgata $10,000 Guarantee in February for $2,185. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: In April, you finished in second place in the Party/Borgata NJCOP High Roller Event for $23,100. Tell us how you felt after that tournament. George Cicak: I was very relieved. I felt there was added pressure on me after coming off bubbling two of the $15K WPT seats. I don't think I could have handled a third five-figure bubble in 10 days. It was a really stressful and fun final table with the massive bubble. We played short-handed for a few hours and there were a lot of strange spots that developed because of the dynamics and ICM implications. I was hungry, both for the win and for food. I didn't want to make any mistakes and ignored just about everything else. The last hand heads-up, I lost an all-in pre-flop with Q-Q to T-7o that would have put me close to even in chips. I was so relieved to get to second place that I wasn't even slightly tilted losing as such a big favorite pre-flop. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? George Cicak: PartyPoker. I got in touch with one of the higher ups at PartyPoker and we talked a lot about issues and improvements. We worked on fixing the structures and some of the payouts for the $10K and $50K Guaranteed tournaments. They were really bad in the beginning and have greatly improved. I have a lot of faith in PartyPoker and this person going forward. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done, but it's a long process and PartyPoker is going in the right direction. The $50,000 Guarantee Sunday Major is the best and biggest regular tournament on the New Jersey sites. Party has also had a few $100K guarantees. I'm looking forward to what Party is going to be in the future. We're still in the very beginning of all of this. I'm looking forward to defending my NJCOP leaderboard title for NJCOP II whenever that may be. PocketFives: How many hours do you dedicate to poker each week? George Cicak: Before I got second, I was playing just about every day for six to 12 hours. Since then, I've been on a hiatus and have only played the $10K once or twice a week and a few random tournaments in between. I probably played the most tournaments the first six months and was playing just about everything. There's really no other way to do it than grind everything, especially with having a big edge in all New Jersey tournaments. I've been lazy, though, and have avoided playing on WSOP.com, Ultimate Poker, and 888 Poker for a while. The schedules and structures on those sites are pretty bad. I have missed a lot of value from not playing on those, but it is working out all right for now. PocketFives: To what do you attribute your success playing online poker? George Cicak: Most of my success comes from constantly improving all aspects of my game. I've changed so much about my style of play and fixed lots of leaks over the last few months and years of playing. Fortunately for me, I'm friends with a few elite players and we talk about poker a lot. I'm still learning new strategies and making adjustments every day. If you feel you've reached a point where you're content with your abilities and you become relaxed, then you're already the fish. If you aren't adjusting and moving forward, then you're not adjusting and moving forward. You'll always be at the point you are at and more people will pass you by. Poker is such a humbling game sometimes and requires a lot of non-poker strategy qualities to become great. You can't be afraid to put yourself out there and be embarrassed by your mistakes and leaks. You have to always be broken down and rebuilt and almost mocked about your play to improve. There is always more to think about, always more to adjust and improve on, nothing in poker is concrete, and you're never as good as you think you are. PocketFives: Do you plan on playing in the World Series of Poker this summer? George Cicak: Yes. I'm leaving in May and staying for eight days, coming back for a few weeks, and then heading out again a week before the Main Event. The last few years, I had a full-time job and wasn't able to get out at all. This year, I'm jobless and have the time. I'm focused and ready to pillage for a bracelet. 21. Maureen RedhotmommaLudwig (pictured) out of Glen Ridge, New Jersey is a stay at home mom who juggles a busy lifestyle, but still manages to find time to play online poker in New Jersey. With over $20,000 in recorded online cashes, her notable finishes include a third place in a WSOPOC event for $2,500, a win in the WSOP.com$10,000 Guarantee for $2,750, and a seventh place in the PartyPoker/Borgata Poker $50,000 Guarantee for $1,484. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: Tell us your story of how you got started in poker. Maureen Ludwig: When I met my husband, my mother-in-law asked me, "Do you gamble?" I said, "No." She said, "You will!" So, I started playing poker in family home games. In 2004, I signed up for PartyPoker, PokerStars, etc. This was before Black Friday. We started a poker backing group with $1,000 and grew it to almost $150,000 in only a few months with four successful players, me being one of them. Players were backed, sent on their way, and got to keep half of their winnings. We then cashed out, paid our taxes, hired a lawyer, and found out shortly thereafter that we could not proceed due to legal issues with poker. I became very experienced back then in only a few years. Sometimes I would play six $100 single-tables at once with a baby in my arms and two toddlers running around. Then, I would throw in maybe ten MTTs throughout the day. PocketFives: What has been your most memorable cash or win on the New Jersey websites? Maureen Ludwig: The most memorable cash for me was winning the $10K on WSOP.com on March 21. The chip leader had me at least three-to-one heads-up and I had made up my mind up that I was going to win it. I also won the $5K on PartyPoker on December 8. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Maureen Ludwig: I prefer PartyPoker and WSOP.com. I love the 10K chip stack that Party gives you in those big tournaments on the weekends. It gives you a little time to make something happen. Yesterday, I final tabled three times in the WSOP.com rebuy tournaments. So, now of course, I think I am starting to like those rebuys as well. I love the satellites on WSOP.com too. I think they are a good value, but I think PartyPoker has done a great job in making the satellites accessible all day long. I would like WSOP.com to have a few in the morning. PocketFives: To what do you attribute your success playing online? Maureen Ludwig: I think I can attribute my success to thousands of hours playing online poker. There are just a few of us who have that kind of experience. I was lucky to have acquired that knowledge before Black Friday. I think the other issue is staying positive. You have to keep your chin up so that you can recover from those beats. I don't want to tilt in my other tournaments I am playing simultaneously. If you do, you should not play too many at once. I am a mother of three girls, so I also have to know when to rest. Gone are the days of sleeping in. I have learned that I do not play well tired! Therefore, I only play $100 buy-ins between one and three times per week, sometimes not at all. I would like to see a few days a week with an earlier buy- in, say an 8:30am start. I also never play when I am in a bad mood. That is a recipe for disaster. You might as well throw your money out the window. PocketFives: How can we get more women to play online poker in New Jersey? Maureen Ludwig: I can't tell you how many women laugh when they find out that I play poker. They laugh because they cannot relate. Or they say, "Oh, my aunt loves roulette!" Why aren't more women playing, thus increasing our player pool? The answer is that women who don't understand the game are intimidated. If they learn how to play online, that intimidation factor will dissipate. We need more incentives to get them to play. Offer bonuses to women who join up and to the people that refer them. Offer women-only tournaments once or twice a week. Hire consultants to help them understand the game. Advertise the stay at home moms that are doing it. I probably play at least 30 hours a week, juggle the groceries, household, piano, dance, soccer, field hockey, swim team, voice lessons, and the social life of three happy girls. I am very lucky because my husband plays, understands, and loves the game as well.

  24. PocketFives had the opportunity to chat with Anthony Thatgood45 Pagan (pictured, ranked 5th in New Jersey), who has shown passion for the game of poker ever since he was 12 years old. Any opportunity Pagan could find to develop his poker skills and accomplish his dream to play in the WSOP Main Event, he went after with a lot of drive and determination. A football injury resulted in young phenom pursuing poker as a full-time job to help pay for the surgery he needed. With over $330,000 in tracked online cashes, some of his notable wins include a win in the 888/WSOP $25,000 Guarantee, a win in the PartyPokerGSSS $30,000 Guarantee, and a win in the 888 Big Sunday $10,000 Guarantee for a total of $16,305. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: Give us your thoughts and experiences of regulated online poker in New Jersey. Anthony Pagan: Online poker is awesome because you have the opportunity to make money without leaving your home. The legalization helped me personally because I was playing on Bovada, Lock poker etc. and had to wait two to four weeks for Western Union worrying if I would get my money from overseas. Now you have access to bank transfers and getting my money right at the cage at Borgata and Caesars. PocketFives: When did you start playing poker and why was it appealing? Anthony Pagan: I first started playing poker when I was 12 and each year I played I got better. Every day I learned something new and learned how to enhance my game and skill level. I got so interested in the game because I saw how much money there was to be made. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Anthony Pagan: I love each of the sites. The difference between Borgata and WSOP/888 is that there are more freezeouts on Borgata and fewer rebuys. PocketFives: Since the launch of regulated online poker in New Jersey, what has been your most memorable cash or win? Anthony Pagan: My most memorable win was when I won a seat to the WSOP Main Event. Although it wasn't my biggest cash, it was a dream come true because at age 11 after watching Chris Moneymaker transform the poker world, I always wanted to get myself there and realized one day it could be me if I put in the hard work and dedication. PocketFives: Is there anyone or anything that helped change how you approach the game? Anthony Pagan: Absolutely. After traveling back and forth to Rahway, West New York, Bayonne, Jersey City, Perth Amboy, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and even sneaking into Atlantic City casinos during senior year of high school, I was living the house game/club scene with help from Sean wishihAdsOMeLUcK Martin and Eddie PompiAA2 Roman. I got more serious about poker and it became my career after I dislocated my shoulder during a football game senior year and had to pay $23,000 for my surgery. Ever since then, it has changed my life forever. PocketFives: What do you do away from poker? What else interests you? Anthony Pagan: When I am not playing poker, I spend my time with my girlfriend Amanda. I enjoy playing sports, working out, and everything and anything having to do with football. I also love watching movies and looking at poker hands from other great players.
  25. New Jersey online poker is in full swing and, with 100 days of operation under its belt, WSOP.com has released data highlighting the enormous impact that mobile will play in the burgeoning market. The well-known brand, run by Caesars Interactive Entertainment, found that 26% of all play came from mobile devices or tablets, with gamblers spending an average of 43 minutes on Caesars' various online casino websites. Poker players at WSOP.com spent even more time on the site, averaging 76 minutes. The data won't come as a surprise to analysts and executives who have long predicted that mobile devices would play a key role in the industry. "Mobile applications will play an enormous piece of the puzzle in online wagering, which is why we are so positive and see so much upside in the months ahead," saidJoe Lupo, Senior VP of Borgata. While analysts have tempered their online gaming revenue expectations for New Jersey's first year, casino officials say that the current numbers don't take into account the potential for mobile growth, which is only starting to happen. So far, a number of New Jersey casinos offer online poker via mobile apps, including 888 Poker, WSOP.com, PartyPoker, and Borgata Poker (mobile client for Borgata shown below). Operators like the Tropicana, Trump Plaza, and Trump Taj Mahal offer mobile betting on casino table games. One issue hampering growth is cell phone usage. Due to the fact that players must be verified by geo-location software, most mobile apps only allow players to gamble when connected to WiFi. That means players hoping to access sites on the go using 3G or 4G cellular networks will be out of luck for the time being. Lisa Spengler, spokeswoman for the DGE, recently told the Associated Press that the Division is working with geo-location vendors to provide a solution that would allow players to connect through such networks in the future. The trend toward the use of mobile devices in i-gaming is not limited to New Jersey and can be seen in the UK market as well. Gambling operator William Hill recently reported that its mobile betting revenues increased 298% from 2012 to 2013. Paddy Power saw a similar increase in usage, while Betfairhas reported that mobile betting was up 64% year-over-year. Patrick Kennedy, Paddy Power's CEO, believes that 90% of industry growth will come from mobile. With smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices so pervasive, it's easy to see how mobile gaming could see tremendous growth. According to Nielsen, 60% of US mobile subscribers used smartphones as of June 2013. "With tablet growth increasing and smartphone adoption continuing to reach more and more, it is clear the future of the majority of gaming experiences will be on these devices," said Caesars' Seth Palansky.
