  1. On Wednesday, PokerStars, the largest online poker site in the world, announced the schedule for the 2014 Spring Championship of Online Poker, or SCOOP as it's more commonly called. The series will run from May 4 to May 18 and guarantee $40 million. View the schedule here. As a press release from the site announced, "For the first time ever, there will be three events every day of the championship, re-entry tournaments, and Progressive Super-Knockouts, which have proved very popular." The 2014 SCOOP schedule boasts 18 different games in 15 different formats, 13 tournaments with a guarantee of at least $1 million, and 90 tournaments with a guarantee of at least $100,000. There are 45 events, or 135 individual tournaments. The SCOOP Main Event will take place on May 18 with buy-ins of $109 (Low), $1,050 (Medium), and $10,300 (High) and guarantees of $1 million, $2 million, and $3 million, respectively. If you're not familiar with the series' format, each SCOOP event consists of three tournaments with Low, Medium, and High buy-ins. In essence, there's a tournament for every budget every day. PokerStars officials are predicting that the 2014 SCOOP will be the richest in the series' history. As the same press release explained, "Last year's SCOOP is still the richest online poker championship series ever held, with a total of $75,585,435.05 awarded to players across 132 tournaments. With three extra tournaments this year, there are high expectations that it will beat last year's total to set a new record." The opening event of the 2014 SCOOP is a No Limit Hold'em Six-Max event that has buy-ins of $27, $215, and $2,100. For players who excel in that tournament and others on the SCOOP schedule, PokerStars will host a variety of leaderboardswith prizes that include SCOOP trophies, PCA packages, and WCOOP tickets. In 2013, Viktor Isildur1Blom (pictured) won the High-Stakes Main Event for over $1 million. Pros like Daniel Negreanu also won SCOOP events and $75 million was awarded to PokerStars players. 2. The three PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker Main Events wrapped up on Monday and, when the smoke cleared, $12.7 million had been distributed to over 26,000 total entrants. All three Main Events more than doubled their guarantees. We'll start with the High-Stakes Main Event, which saw Ivan "vandir4rek" Soshnikov (pictured) emerge victorious in a $10,300 buy-in tournament from a field of 657 entrants after a three-way deal. Soshnikov is an EPT High Roller champion and followed in the footsteps of Viktor "Isildur1" Blom, who won the High-Stakes Main Event last year for about the same amount. Heads-up play between Soshnikov and Peter "Se7enTr3y" Akery lasted an hour, with A-6 outlasting K-9 for the win. Soshnikov amassed a seven-figure score, the only one given out during any of the SCOOP Main Events this year: 1. vandir4rek $1,048,000 2. Se7enTr3y $860,000 3. Better C4ll $890,820 *3-way deal 4. M.nosbocaJ $499,320 5. Grindation $350,838 (Grindation) 6. NeverScaredB $279,225 (NeverScaredB) 7. VVVILELAAA $213,525 8. sanpri $147,825 9. sat1337en $98,550 In the Mid-Stakes Main Event, LexaLucky666held onto a 5:1 chip lead to defeat EPT Loutraki champion and WCOOP bracelet winner Zimnan Zimmy Ziyard. In fact, heads-up play lasted a scant five hands, with LexaLucky666's pocket nines crushing Ziyard's pocket sevens when the money went in. No deal was struck in this one: 1. LexaLucky666 $635,379.00 2. Zimmy86 $473,499.00 (Zimmy) 3. marek_heinz $333,877.50 (marek_heinz) 4. secky0222 $232,702.50 5. Four-7-Kevin $171,997.50 (Kevish) 6. €urop€an $131,527.50 (European) 7. seonkett1 $91,057.50 8. Andr the gun $50,587.50 9. 1337Gambl0r $32,376.00 Last, but certainly not least, a former #1 player in the PocketFives Online Poker Rankings, Ari Engel(pictured), won the Low-Stakes Main Event after entering heads-up play against jeppinhowith a 3:1 chip lead. The prize pool was chopped four ways and Engel recorded his first six-figure tracked online score. He is over $2.3 million in career online MTT earnings and has six World Series of Poker Circuit rings, the third highest total ever behind Alex Masek (eight) and Chris Reslock (seven): 1. BodogAri $187,669.27 (Ari) 2. jeppinho $136,418.37 3. MAKKAPAKK $172,207.27 (makkapakk) 4. Didcot4 $12,927.00 This year's SCOOP was the largest one ever, with $81 million being given out over 135 tournaments. Incredibly, every single tournament surpassed its guarantee. 3. [caption width="640"] PokerStars pro Jason Mercier is looking forward to defending his SCOOP Player of the Series title.[/caption] It's two o'clock in the afternoon in the principality of Monaco. As punctual as ever, PokerStars pro Jason Mercier waltzes into the hip Blue Gin Bar at the Monte Carlo Bay Resort wearing basketball shorts and a black, long-sleeved Miami shirt. His white baseball cap is flipped backwards, he's showcasing jet black glasses, and he's adorned with PokerStars patches. He speaks with the same casualness he spoke with eight years ago when, donning a lucky collared shirt, he took down the European Poker Tour's San Remo Main Event. He's as laid back as it gets despite the fact he's about to register for a Single-Day High Roller event with a Є50,000 buy-in. And a few days after that, it'll be time to avenge his PokerStars SCOOP Player of the Series title. 2015 was a banner year for Mercier at SCOOP. He took down his second, third, and fourth SCOOP titles in the span of a couple weeks. He found victory in a $2,100 No Limit Hold'em event, a $2,100 No Limit Draw event, and a $2,100 Fixed Limit Badugi tournament, capturing SCOOP Player of the Series honors. "I'm not sure I can repeat getting three wins again," Mercier said from the comfort of a fluffy blue couch. "That was pretty tough. But, I think I can win Player of the Series again." It'll be all about volume for Mercier during this year's SCOOP. "I'm going to play pretty much every event," the Floridian said. "Last year, I didn't play most of the low events because they're so small relative to the larger events. And I was playing on a small laptop last year. This year, I brought a monitor, so I might have some of the low ones going so I can get some min-cashes for points to give myself a better chance of winning." All told, Mercier reached five final tables during the 2015 SCOOP, which also ran in May. "I'm not going to be disappointed if I don't win a SCOOP title – they're hard to get," said Mercier. "But I look forward to doing well. Winning Player of the Series this year is meaningful because I won it last year. It would be that much more impressive if I were to win it two years in a row. It's like defending my title." He'll come into SCOOP more determined than ever to repeat. And if he walks the walk, he'll get a trophy and $20,000 in cash. Maybe he'll drop the mic too. Like other pros, Mercier must exit the United States in order to play on PokerStars' dot-com site. Rather than moan and groan like some players do, Mercier sees it as an opportunity to travel the world. "It forces me to go to different places," he said. "This year, I went to Amsterdam and Aruba to play poker, two places I probably wouldn't have gone to otherwise. It's given me an opportunity to see more places and spend more time in places I want to for weeks at a time." When he does arrive at his grinding pad, he'll be able to battle in a series with 55 events and over $40 million guaranteed. "I'm looking forward to all of the Mixed Games," he said, trying to remember the schedule off-hand. "It's nice that there's at least a $2K buy-in for almost every variant like No Limit Deuce and Five Card Draw. But, I'm also looking forward to the $21K Eight-Max because a lot of times the biggest buy-in is a heads-up event, and I'm not crazy about heads-up tournaments, especially in WCOOP or SCOOP because they're really, really tough." The big $21K Eight-Max event will take place on May 14. You can expect many of the poker world's elite to show up. Speaking of showing up, volume will mean an aggressive SCOOP schedule. Otherwise, an encore performance will be hard to come by. "It usually depends what happened the night before," Mercier said of his daily schedule. "If I'm up super late, I'll usually have time to wake up and hop in the first event at the last moment. If I got knocked out of everything early, I might wake up and try to do something during the day and eat lunch or go to the beach. The first event of the day during SCOOP, I'll probably late register so I can do something earlier in the day. I'll register for all of the medium and high events during the day and potentially play some cash games on the side if they're good." Most of the time, he'll have seven or eight tables open at a time. Up to 15 SCOOP tournaments can happen in a single day. Whatever happens online, Mercier surrounds himself with the very best. Imagine having access to all of the following brainpower. "I still talk to Dan O'Brien a lot and Kyle Julius," Mercier said. "In the last year or two, I've started hanging out with Mustapha Kanit and Dario Sammartino. Mustapha is pretty unbelievable in what he has been able to do in the last couple of years." SCOOP runs for two weeks beginning Sunday, May 8.
  4. [caption width="630"] Doug 'WCG|Rider' Polk won six figures and a SCOOP title on Saturday. (WPT photo)[/caption] Saturday afternoon Doug ‘WCG|Rider’ Polk captured his first career Spring Championship of Online Poker title by beating one of the tougher No Limit Hold’em fields the festival has to offer. Polk beat out 150 other players to win Event 43, a $2,100 NLHE event for $115,000. And he did it all live on Twitch. Polk streamed the final table live on Twitch right through until the final hand. Polk also made the final eight of the $21,000 buy-in Heads Up High Roller event which plays out on Sunday afternoon. David ‘EzPaTuLa’ Cabrera beat out Ivan ‘Negriin’ Luca to win the $215 buy-in mid-stakes version of the event. Carbrera walked away with $57,366.13 for the win. The low-stakes version went to Noah ‘dirty.brasil’ Vaillancourt. The Vancouver based grinder conquered 2,876 other players including Yuri ‘theNERDguy’ Martins heads up to win the title. After Brazil failed to win a SCOOP title on Friday, the South American poker powerhouse made sure to get one on Saturday. Ricardo ‘preTu.ras’ Silva took down Event 50 (L), a $27 NL Hold'em, Six Max, Progressive Super KO tournament. Silva’s win is the 19th win by a Brazilian player this SCOOP. Silva outlasted 7,438 other players to win the title and the $$13,732.61 first place prize money. He also collected an additional $2,821.27 in bounties. Silva won a Turbo Championship of Online Poker last year and now just needs a World Championship of Online Poker title to join the COOP Triple Crown club. The mid-stakes version of that event went to another player with previous SCOOP success ‘ex6tenceLV’ beat out over 2,300 players to win the second SCOOP title of his career and almost $50,000 in prize money. Hannes ‘SuchADegen’ Speiser won Event 50 (H), a $2,100 buy-in tournament, to win $107,730 plus an extra $41,645.97 in bounties. Also worth noting that Shaun Deeb earned enough points on Saturday to move past Jason Mercier for top spot on the Overall SCOOP leaderboard. With just two days of play left Deeb has 780 points while Mercier trails with 755. 5. For the talented players who have already won a PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker title at some point in their career, the first six days of the 2016 SCOOP have to give them reason to remain optimistic. Previous winners are doing well this year and Thursday’s action was no different. Germany’s ’Ssick_One’ won his second SCOOP title in two years, taking down one of the three Six Max shootouts on the schedule Thursday. ’Ssick_One’ won Event #12 (M): $215 No Limit Hold’em Six Max Shootout, beating out a 1,075-player field to win $34,400. The German poker pro was once ranked in the top ten of the PocketFives Rankings. Nick ‘chilenocl’ Yunis, who already has a TCOOP title from 2015, added a SCOOP title to his resume Thursday. Yunis won Event #12 (H), the $2,100 buy-in NLHE Six Max Shootout event. He beat Matt ‘OLD TIME GIN’ Stone heads up to walk away with the $95,040 winner’s share. While previous winners are doing well, it’s hard to ignore the amazing performance being put on by Brazilian players this year. Guilherme ’GhRibeiro’ Ribeiro became the latest Brazilian poker player to win a SCOOP title this year. Ribeiro beat out 3,353 players to win Event #12(L) and the $13,176.26 that came with it. Just a few hours later, another Brazilian found his way into the winner’s circle. Thiago ‘tgrigoletti ‘Grigoletti beat ‘maoosalazar’ heads up to win Event #13 (H): $700 No Limit Hold’em Hyper-Turbo, Progressive Super KO. Grigoletti’s win was the eighth SCOOP title won by a Brazilian player this year. Jason ‘jcarverpoker’ Somerville finished ninth in that event. Argentina’s ‘pintoelbajon’ earned his first SCOOP title with a victory in Event #13 (M): $82 No Limit Hold’em Hyper-Turbo, Progressive Super KO. He took home over $50,000 in winnings, including bounties, for his efforts. 6. [caption width="640"] Shawn Buchanan Continues to add to his collection of SCOOP titles.[/caption] If the early days of the 2016 Spring Championship of Online Poker are giving any indication of a theme, it's that the good poker players are good at poker. On Thursday, Shawn 'Buck 21' Buchanan joined a growing list of previous SCOOP winners to have added to their list of titles this year. Buchanan took down the $2,100 No Limit Omaha Hi-Lo event for his fourth career SCOOP title. The Brazilians also continue to make their mark in the SCOOP, with 'renatomaiag' taking down Event #9(L) for a $5,786 score and Alexandros 'mexican222' Kolonias taking top spot in Event #9(H), earning him $66,140 and his second career SCOOP title, on Wednesday. Mexico’s ‘Aaralynn’ picked up his first SCOOP title yesterday as well, defeating ‘oLLEternal’ in the $11 buy-in No limit Hold‘em event for a $19,359 payday. In the mid-stakes tournament, Austria’s ‘Keep3r’ took down his compatriot ‘Päffchen’ for his first title, although the pair made a deal to split the pot evenly at $69,500. A total of 1,525 runners bought into the $1,050 No Limit Hold‘em Super Tuesday Special Edition event, creating a massive $1,525,000 prize pool. In the end, Russia’s ‘otitov’ bested Slovenian ‘Sinoire’ to capture the title along with the $235,303 first-place prize. The Russians remained on top in the Event #13 low-stakes tournament, with ‘roma-dk’ earning the $5,973 top prize, plus $1,633 in bounties after taking down Germany’s ‘..:xMarQx::.’. Some 2,991 players turned out for the $27 buy-in No Limit Omaha Six-Max tournament, generating a $73,429 prize pool. Ukraine’s ‘TheInnuendo’ battled with ‘dubfitz’ of Ireland heads up for the title, with TheInnuendo’ eventually scooping the final hand to take home an $8,578 prize. Polish players took both the first and second spots in the $215 buy-in No Limit Omaha Hi-Lo event. In the end, ‘Beeethoven87’ defeated ‘bobix12’ to bank a $27,573 chunk of change, leaving $20,332 for his opponent. The high price of the $2,100 No Limit Omaha Hi-Lo event turned away all but 158 entrants. 8. [caption width="640"] Rafael 'GM_VALTER' Moraes was part of the Brazilian brigade that dominated Day 2 of PokerStars SCOOP[/caption] Brazilian grinders dominated the second day of the Spring Championship of Online Poker, taking home three of the six titles up for grabs, but nobody had a bigger score than Rafael 'GM_VALTER' Moraes who walked away with over $300,000 for his win. The $2,100 NLHE high-stakes event garnered a respectable 887 runners, who pumped up the prize pool to $1.77 million. Once again, the Brazilians dominated, with Moraes and his compatriot, Kelvin 'Kelvin_FP:AR' Kerber, taking both first and second place. In the final hand, Moraes flopped two pair and a flush draw against his opponent’s made straight. When the turn brought another six, completing Moraes' full house, the two players got all the money in. Rafael took home a $301,625 payday for the win, leaving his opponent with $256,297 for second place. The mid-stakes, Event #4 NLHE tournament featured a $250 buy-in and garnered 6,745 entrants. Brazilian grinder 'Nelepo10' faced off against Austria’s 'Magardan' in heads-up play, with each hoping to secure the largest chunk of the $1.34 million prize pool. In the final hand, 'Magardan' moved all in with [poker card="qh"][poker card="js"], but went bust when his opponent flopped trips with [poker card="ks"][poker card="9s"]. 'Nelepo10' became the third Brazilian to win an SCOOP title in the first two days of play, banking $209,095 for his victory. In total, 13,286 entrants ponied up the $27 buy-in for the Event #4 low-stakes tournament, generating a prize pool of $326,171. Austria’s 'glissario' started the final table with the biggest stack, and rode it all the way into heads-up play, where he dueled with Norway’s 'Elefant_X'. In the end, the two players struck a deal which gave 'glissario' a $40,940 chunk of change for first place, and a $33,474 consolation prize for his opponent. The Event #5 tournaments began with a $7.50 buy-in Six Max NLHE event which attracted 13,381 entrants, all vying for the $91,258 in prize money. Yet another Brazilian, 'Bean1992', came out on top, vanquishing Hungry’s ‘FishOnHeater’ to win yet another title for his country along with the $12,511 first place payout. The mid-stakes Event #5 tournament drew 3,361 players who made 1,117 reentries, creating a prize pool of $335,850. When the smoke cleared, Germany’s 'HhCMotU' found himself heads-up at the final table with Danish grinder 'Anderbisse'. The final hand played out with three diamonds on the board, leaving 'Anderbisse' with a Jack-high flush, but giving his opponent a King-high flush. The German walked away with a hefty $51,219 cash, with his opponent pocketing a $36,943 payday. A total of 1,279 runners paid the $700 buy-in to participate in the last high-stakes tournament of the day. 9. In 2016, Brazilian players won an amazing 21 PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker titles. If the opening events of 2017 SCOOP are any indication, they’re going to have little-to-no trouble smashing that number this year. Brazilian players won four SCOOP titles on Monday, with Diego ‘Mr.Bittar’ Bittar leading the way with a $246,504 score in Event #4 High ($2,100 No Limit Hold’em) after chopping heads-up with Germany’s ‘sk2ll_m0dR’. Bittar beat out 751 other players to win the first SCOOP title of his career. Bittar came into SCOOP as the #39-ranked player in the world, and #4 in Brazil. The other Brazilians picking up SCOOP titles on Monday were ‘ViDss’, who won Event #3 Medium ($215 Progressive KO), for $60,482.02 after chopping with former #1 Tim ‘Tmay420’ West, Felipe ‘lipe piv’ Boianovsky, who won Event #6 (Medium) $109 Six Max No Limit Hold’em outright for $41,811 and Soul Dog RJ, who took down Event #6 (Low) $11 Six Max No Limit Hold’em for $12,530.54. Dylan ‘ImaLucSac’ Linde beat a final table that included Stevan ‘random_chu’ Chew, Justin ‘ZeeJustin’ Bonomo, #4-ranked ‘inhoo’, ‘Apotheosis92’ and #7-ranked ‘Ariados’ to win Event #6 High ($1,050 Six Max NLHE) the second SCOOP title of his career and $126,852.24*. The final three players agreed to a deal that saw each walk away with at least $119,000.87. Germany’s ‘O$kar15’ won the Sunday Million Special Edition (Event #4 Medium), for $160,989.46 after coming to an agreement with the final three players remaining. The $215 buy-in event attracted a field of 6,754 players. Jonas ‘donut604’ Mackoff finished sixth for $43,225.60. Leonard had no plans on playing on Friday, but it turned out for the best. In the $2,100 High version of the event, ‘_TheJds_’ beat out Australia’s James ‘Andy McLEOD’ Obst to win $72,600. Obst had to settle for $43,560 as runner-up. PocketFiver ‘Olista19’ and ‘paulmoko’ chopped the $27 Low version, with ‘Olista19’ taking home $5,157.49 after eventually emerging victorious while ‘paulmoko’ earned $4,657.49. The biggest winner on Friday was Germany’s ‘KornmeisterX’ who took down Event #19 High ($1,050 NLHE Thursday Thrill Special Edition) for $139,196.55. He also won $51,521.89 in bounties for a total take home of just over $190,000. Russian ‘Ti0373’ finished second for $101,820 plus another $39,096.62 in bounties. The other big winner on Friday was Robert ‘pokerguru740’ Kuhn. He beat out ‘MITS 304’ to win Event #23 High ($2,100 Six Max NLHE Zoom) for a $131,040 payday. 11. [caption width="640"] Gordon Vayo had no trouble closing out Event #1 (High) of the Spring Championship of Online Poker on Monday {WSOP photo)[/caption] Most of the attention on the 2017 Spring Championship of Online Poker on Monday was focused squarely on the second day of play in the three Main Events. While those were each playing down to a final table of nine, nine other events wrapped up including the final Phase of Event #1 and that’s where the biggest winner of the day came from. Gordon ‘holla@yoboy’ Vayo beat out the 566 players in Phase 2 of Event #1 ($1,050 No Limit Hold’em) to walk away with a shade more than $692,000. Phase 1s of the event actually began running nearly three weeks ago, with each Phase 1 feeding into Monday’s final phase. First place was originally guaranteed $1 million, but the final four players agreed to a deal that saw every player walk away with at least $413,000. Runner-up ‘girafanger7’, who was chip leader at the time of the deal, walked away with $745,000. He also nearly made the final table of the $10,300 Main Event (High), finishing tenth for $72,567.49. ‘funwheel’ took home $193,535.22 for topping the Medium version of Event #1, while ‘squirrelporn’ banked $100,060.07 after winning the Low. ‘compris’ topped a field of 866 players in Event #54 High ($2,100 Eight Max No Limit Hold’em) to win $320,420. The Medium version had 5,068 players, with ‘ BAGHDADD’ coming out on top, earning $156,745.51 for an outright win. The Low version went to ‘ceda_ks” for $36,754.31 Ankush ‘pistons87’ Mandavia chopped Event #57 High ($1,050 NLHE, Eight Max, Progressive KO) with ‘freddopizza’ for $96,051.57. 13. [caption width="320" align="alignleft"] Australia's top-ranked online poker player, Rory Young, adopted a new kitten just days after arriving in Rosarito for SCOOP[/caption] The top-ranked online poker player in Australia isn't actually in Australia right now. Rory Young is hanging out in Rosarito, Mexico with a few other grinders, preparing for the grind that is the PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker. And he couldn't be any happier. "I owe my love of Rosarito to 'JWProdigy', Jordan Westmoreland," said Young, who met Westmoreland a little over a year and a half ago while traveling with good friend Alex Lynskey just after Lynskey finished fourth in the Aussie Millions Main Event. "Then we ended up traveling around Adelaide. We went up and stayed at my parents' beach house up in Central Coast. We had a grind house up there for a little while. That was a lot of fun. We figured we'd keep the momentum going." Young, Westmoreland, Benjamin 'spektah' Leblonde and Timothy 'Weygang' English rented a house in Rosarito and instantly fell in love with the place. "Everyone's helpful, it's just a really relaxing environment; margaritas by the beach, waking up every day to good weather, and great food. The cost of living here is like really cheap as well," said Young. As 2016 SCOOP approached, they packed up and headed off to Cabo San Lucas for the series. There, Young and his group met up with some more of Australia's finest poker players; Jonathan 'xMonsterxDongx' Karamalikis and Stevan 'random.chu' Chew. While the camaraderie was great, Young found that poker was taking second billing to everything that Cabo offers. " I'll never do that again. It was more like we were there to party and play SCOOP on the side," said Young. "When SCOOP's so big it's probably not the best idea to be partying so much. Do more of a low-key thing this time and then party in Cabo afterwards." And that's exactly what Young has planned for this year. He'll be staying in Rosarito through the end May when his attention turns to the World Series of Poker. His poker-playing roommates this year include Adrian 'Knightsgee' Attenborough and Corey 'Corlusion' Kempson. The group plans to take advantage of the two-week break between SCOOP and the start of the WSOP with lots of relaxation. Having played a full WSOP schedule before, Young is looking at a different approach this year. "I'll probably focus a lot on cash games in the World Series and definitely find all the good tournaments but I wouldn't be on that every day tournament grind," said Young, who won't be sitting in every single tournament in pursuit of a second WSOP bracelet. " I'll play the good ones. The Millionaire Maker and stuff like that but I'm not going to be sitting there flicking $1Ks from the start. It's just too much of a grind and I want to try to enjoy my life a bit more rather than just like the live grind is very, very demanding." Lots of tournament grinders dream of winning a WSOP bracelet. Young did that in his home country in 2014, winning the $1650 Dealer's Choice event at WSOP Asia Pacific. Just don’t tell Young it’s a WSOP bracelet or ask him to show it to you. “It feels like ages ago. It’s not really a bracelet win. It was like a 60-person mixed game field in Australia. I lost the bracelet actually,” said Young. “I lost it in Mexico last year. I brought it with me because it was in my safe at home in Sydney, and I hadn’t taken it out since I won it. I’m not really a sentimental person, so I thought I’d maybe melt it down and make it into a cool necklace or a ring.” Over the last few months, Young has climbed up the PocketFives Rankings and broke into the top 20 last week for the first time in his career. He’s currently #19 in the world but if you ask him, it’s basically a months-long heater. “I’m barely playing. I’m just playing majors and just seem to bink something every week. It’s not down to any improvement of my game, I’m just running better now,” said Young. The run good couldn’t possibly come out a worse time for Young – or any Australian poker player for that matter. In March, the Australian senate voted to effectively ban online poker. While the law hasn’t taken effect yet, most of the bigger online poker rooms have indicated they won’t operate in the country once it does. That means Young and his friends could soon find themselves looking at places like Rosarito as a more permanent solution, just like American grinders did after Black Friday. “It might be a bit apathetic, thinking that I have no bearing on the decision, but I’m more of a realist,” said Young. “There’s not much that I could have done to have swayed the decision. Basically, I’m not too hopeful.” Young may not leave the country. He recently signed on as an ambassador for Star Casino in Sydney and could see himself focusing on playing live once he returns home after the WSOP. “If I can’t play online in Sydney, so be it. I’m not desperately out here grinding four days a week of online MTTs anyway. Worst-case scenario, I can just fly to New Zealand for the weekend whenever I want to play majors,” said Young. “I think I’m just going to take it easy and put my time into the Star and look at doing some stuff there instead of playing online. But I know quite a few people who are looking to relocate.”
  14. SCOOP 2018: 183 Events, $65 Million Guaranteed, 5 Platinum Passes You know it's Spring when the robins return, the flowers begin to bloom and online poker players begin to play for spending weeks in front of their dual or triple monitor set up to begin grinding the PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker or partypoker Powerfest. Those players got their first look at the 2018 SCOOP on Thursday when PokerStars released a complete schedule with a special little surprise included. There are 61 events at each of the Low, Medium and High buy-in levels with a total of $65 million in guarantees. On top of that, five players will walk away with $30,000 Platinum Passes that will send those players to the 2019 PokerStars Players Championship next January at Atlantis. There are 28 events with a guarantee of at least $1,000,000. The three Main Events, which run on May 21, carry guarantees of $1,500,000 (Low), $4,000,000 (Medium) and $5,000,000 (High). The biggest buy-in event is Event #14 (High) on May 9, the $25,000 Eight Max High Roller comes with a $2,500,000 guarantee. Last year Russia's 'Black88' chopped the $25,000 High Roller with 'fish2013' to walk away with $702,658.76. The event drew 125 runners. 15. It seems that Ukrainian players have decided to make the 2018 PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker their own little playground. While Roman 'Romeopro' Romanovsky has picked up two wins and a High Roller runner-up finish to challenge 'C Darwin2' for the #1 spot in the world, another Ukrainian was busy taking down the first six-figure score of his career. Andriy 'Andre_Hansen' Lyubovetskiy beat out 3,190 other players to win Event #31-High ($530 No Limit Hold'em Sunday Million Special Edition) for $229,784.45. Canada's 'AZNInFiLtRaT' finished runner-up for $162,480.93. 'trickyone14' rounded out the six-figure scores, taking home $114,891.47 for finishing third. 'Slaassh' beat out 11,272 players to win the Medium version of the event to take home $73,676.61 while 'n1ckoftime' earned $9,088.58 for winning the Low version. Rui 'RuiNF' Ferreira topped Event #30-High ($2,100 Six Max No Limit Hold'em) for $196,407.42 and the second SCOOP title of his career. Jerry 'hummylun' Wong picked up his second SCOOP title of 2018 when he beat out 3,151 players to win Event #35 Low ($11 Five Card NLO8 Six Max). He picked up $5,761.37 for the win. 16. Steve 'BetrThanPhil' Tripp took the headlines on Day 3 of the PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker after grinding his way to victory in Event #8 (High) for a score of $100,343. After 12 more events came to their conclusion on Tuesday, Tripp claimed his first SCOOP title after defeating "0PIGGYBANK" heads-up, with the latter taking away $86,213 after a deal between the two players had been agreed. It was Tripp's second largest recorded online cash after he won $193,804 for taking down FTOPS Event #9 back in 2010. Alex 'lynskey99' Lynskey came through an 8,562 player field in Event #8 (Medium) and claimed the first-place prize of $60,073. 'Kobasteris' was the player to lose the heads-up battle and took away $42,472 in second place. The biggest field of the day came in Event #8 (Low) after 27,101 players paid the $11 tournament entry fee and created a $265,589.80 prize pool, with Marcos 'Marcos Epa' Epaminondas taking the majority share. The Brazilian's prize for outlasting the enormous field was $13,172, the honour of a SCOOP title to his name and his largest recorded online cash to date. In Event #7 (High), 'aDrENalin710' beat out 120 opponents to win a score of $27,202, with 'BelovCaXa' banking $12,246 after securing victory in Event #7 (Medium). Russia's 'Iwantbearich' narrowly missed out on adding a SCOOP title to their previously won PokerStars MicroMillions gold medal after losing a heads-up battle to 'kagor82' in Event #7 (Low). The victor bagged a score of $4,841 with the Russian having to settle for a second-place prize of $3,371. Day 3 saw the first HORSE events of this year's series played out with 'CMoosepower' beating Luke 'lb6121' Schwartz to the title in Event #9 (High). Schwartz already has five SCOOP titles to his name, but the Brit was unable to attain his sixth on this occasion and had to settle for the runners-up prize of $24,800, with 'CMoosepower' earning $34,800 for the win. Event #9 (Medium) saw Russia's 'Zapahzamazki' record their second largest online cash after they came through an 823 field to take the title for $15,431. Thomas 'sandman201' Taylor was able to cash in all three of the HORSE events, which included victory in Event #9 (Low) for $5,625, and a near-final table miss in the 'High' after he exited in 10th place. Event #12 saw three Six Max 'Win the Button' PKO No Limit Hold'em tournaments played out with 'corsei', '88pro88' and 'alberto.m7' taking the titles. $4,381 was added to the bankroll of Romania's 'corsei' courtesy of their win in Event #12 (Low), The UK's Tommy '88pro88' Lawrence followed up on his impressive Sunday Million victory last month by taking down Event #12 (Medium) for $27,700, and last but certainly not least, 'alberto.m7' took the win in Event #12 (high) for $56,828 after seeing off the Brits Jonathan 'proudflop' Proudfoot and Conor '1_conor_b_1' Beresford into second and third place respecitivelty. 17. Former #1-ranked Calvin 'cal42688' Anderson won a record-breaking ninth PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker title on Day 6 of SCOOP and catapulted himself into the top spot on the overall series leaderboard. Anderson came into the day's play already holding a record eight SCOOP titles, but by the end of it, he had made that number nine by winning Event #19 (High) for $126,659. After 335 entrants had departed the $2,100 buy-in field, the final three of Anderson, Aaron Been and David 'dpeters17' Peters went to battle. Peters, fresh off the back of his fourth-place finish at the EPT Monte Carlo Main Event for $280,770, was the first to depart taking away $67,143 for third place, leaving Been the only man standing between Anderson and a ninth SCOOP title. However, Been, who has eclipsed over $3.8M in online tournament earnings, was unable to stop the formidable Anderson from achieving the accolade as the American claimed another six-figure score exactly a year to the day after his last, which came during the 2017 SCOOP series. Anderson's victory propels him to the top of the overall SCOOP leaderboard, overtaking Roman Romanovsky, in a race that will see the winner receive the trophy and a much coveted PokerStars Platinum pass to next year's PCA worth over $30,000. Elsewhere on Day 6, The UK's Jon 'luckyfish89' Clark also achieved quite a remarkable feat after taking down Event #18 (High) for his third 'Thursday Thrill' title in just over eight weeks. The SCOOP special edition 'Thrill' tournament featured a massive $1m guaranteed prize pool with 1,344 entrants all looking for the first-place prize. But it was the former Sunday Million runner-up Clark who went the distance after beating Oscar 'owilson25' Ramirez heads-up, to claim his first SCOOP title and a prize of $104,935. Canada's 'D PitcherAK' won $51,979 for coming through a 7,334 player field in the Event 18 (Medium) Mini Thursday Thrill. 'MarioDutraJR' took the silver medal for $35,971 and 'Whatzaq' took $24,894 in third. Jon 'LUFCBas' Spinks finished in a very respectable fourth-place in the mammoth Event #18 (Low) 19,648 player field. The two-time Sunday Warm-Up champion received $3,636 for his efforts as 'rawacha' took the title for $9,797. PokerStars online-pro Jaime Staples made an appearance at the Event #17 (Low) final table, with the well-known Twitch steamer securing a fifth-place finish for $1,461. 'RunGodLike' was the eventual champion for $6,201 after they beat 'Stoffers1' heads-up, who took $4,320 for second place. 'villepn' won $13,701.09 and Rui 'RuiNF' Ferreira secured $48,271 for winning Event #17 (Medium) and Event #17 (High) respectively. Ferreira was able to come through a final table which featured online phenomenon Victor 'Isildur1' Blom, who exited in sixth-place for $12,876.67 Ramiro 'ramastar88' Petrone, ($57,321), 'WhoAreYoux1' ($39,938) and Alberto 'bertotraste' Novoa ($27,828) made up the top three in Event #19 (Medium), as world no.#10 Petrone secured his first SCOOP title. 'GodOf.com' beat 'karas1926' to victory in Event #19 (Low) and jumped to the top of the SCOOP Low Leaderboard. The win earns them $21,995, with the runner-up taking $15,319. Event #23 saw three 5-Card NLO Six-Max Turbo tournaments take place with 'BigTreeStump' taking down the $530 (High) for $29,791.'Foxy1029' turned $55 into $10,512 in the (Medium) tournament after they negotiated a final table that included current world no.#1 'C. Darwin2', who finished in sixth place. The final three players agreed to a deal before 'Foxy1029' became the last player standing. And in the final result on Day 6, 'SFARRRR' took the Event #23 (Low) win for $3,277 after seeing off 'jogrepiria' ($2,180.14) in second, and 'schmidt88888' ($1,963.11) in third after once again a three-handed deal was made. 24. If the 2019 Spring Championship of Online Poker has a narrative, it's the two-time champ. One day after Juan 'malaka$tyle' Pardo became the 10th player to win a second title of the year, two more players added their name to that list. One day after winning his first 2019 title and $312K, Kahle 'ROFLShove' Burns added $178K and a second title by winning Event #52 High ($2,100 No Limit Hold'em). Burns beat a final table that included runner-up Ole 'wizowizo' Schemion, Steve 'Mr. Tim Caum' O'Dwyer, former #1-ranked 'Legenden', and recent SCOOP winner Jans 'Graftekkel' Arends. The second player to win a second SCOOP crown on Saturday was Michael 'merla888' Gathy. The Belgian beat 118 other players in Event #56 High ($2,100 8 Game) and earned $56,035.24 after chopping with 'WTFOMFGOAO'. The runner- up ended up pocketing $47,494.76. Third place finisher 'kimokh' earned $30,940. Liviu '0Human0' Ignat and Manuel 'fellatiado' Ruivo made a heads-up deal in Event #59 High ($2,100 No Limit Hold'em). Cyprus-based 'aggro_F' topped the 621-player field in Event #72 High ($1,050 No Limit Hold'em PKO) for $54,592.45 from the prize pool and an additional $40,714.29 in bounties.
