  1. PocketFives had the opportunity to sit down with one of our New Jersey members, Dan RedSoxNets5Sewnig (pictured), who hails from Trenton, New Jersey. With over $94,000 in tracked online cashes, some of Sewnig's notable results include two wins in the WSOP.com$10,000 Guarantee in the month of August for a total of $5,639 and a win in the Ultimate Poker $5,000 Guarantee for $1,600. Visit PocketFives' New Jersey poker community for the latest news and discussion from New Jersey players. PocketFives: Give us your thoughts and experiences of regulated online poker in New Jersey. Dan Sewnig: Online poker in New Jersey has felt like a mixed bag for me. I've seen many good and bad things throughout these first nine months on the sites. Most of the sites are really lacking in the customer service department. It seems that the responsibility of communicating with the players has been given to people who don't speak English as a first language, don't know poker very well, or both. It's tough to explain to someone that you feel you deserve better than seventh place money when the software went down with seven people left and ICM dictated at that point that you get between third and fourth place money when the person you are speaking with doesn't have any clue what equity is, let alone ICM. It is unfortunate too that the one site that seemed to be doing customer service right, Ultimate Poker, simply did not have as good of a product as the other sites and was therefore not able to keep up. All of that being said, I have seen a lot of good things about these sites. They all seem to have thrown a lot of promotions out at customers from the get-go, trying to drag as many people as possible into the market. WSOP ran a live freeroll for a seat into the National Championship for anyone who had an online account. 888 ran a $5,000 freeroll every night for a long time. Borgata/Party Poker has a $50,000 Guarantee every single week! At this time last year, I would have never thought any of that would have been possible. Having a legal place to play again after online poker was stripped away in 2011 is very cool, so while I would like to see some things be improved, I am very happy to have a place to play again. PocketFives: How long have you been playing online poker? Dan Sewnig: I started messing around on PokerStars about seven years ago. I would play the Hubble's freerolls and get really small-stakes from people on poker forums. I would run my roll up to a few hundred dollars, bust it, run it up, bust it, repeat. I probably busted my bankroll ten times before finally taking fourth in a $16.50 turbo for a little over $2,000. The same month I turned 19, I took 12th in the Turbo Takedown on PokerStars for $8,000 and a few months after that I took 17th in the Sunday Warm-Up. I eventually got my roll into five-figures and was starting to play $100 MTTs while putting a lot of volume into the $12 180-mans when Black Friday hit. PocketFives: How did you get started in poker originally? Why was it appealing? Dan Sewnig: My cousin showed me the game when I was maybe 10 or 11. After that, I would play little $5 games with my friends from school. I remember my friend's mom asking us who we thought was going to win the Main Event when there were about 50 left. One friend said Phil Ivey, one said Sammy Farha, and since I liked his name I said Chris Moneymaker. Watching him make that run was pretty cool. I'm sure I would still be playing the game had someone else won, but that was my first experience with watching people play for large sums of money on TV and it definitely helped get me hooked. I've always loved games and math, so when those two things are combined I really get fixated on them. Math was my major in college and I'll be student teaching high school math in the fall. I loved psychology enough in high school to consider minoring in it in college, but was not able to. So, the combination of a math and psychology game has just always been appealing to me. PocketFives: What are your favorite New Jersey online poker sites to play and why? Dan Sewnig: At this point, I'm only playing on WSOP, 888, and Borgata. Ultimate Poker had amazing overlay tournaments, but the software just wasn't up to par, so once they removed the overlays, many, including me, stopped playing there. I like the WSOP/888 software better than Borgata/Party's. 888 has a great selection of mid-stakes tournaments and they seem to have found a very good structure that allows players a lot of play while keeping the tournaments to a manageable amount of time. Borgata/Party has added the $50 $5,000 guarantees at 8PM and 9PM daily, which are a great middle ground between the $20 and $100 tournaments they previously had. WSOP's $25 Rebuy $10K Guarantee that runs almost every night could probably fix the structure a little bit, but overall is a great tournament to play. WSOP, 888, and Borgata/Party all have their pros and cons, but are each very good options for anyone looking to start playing online in New Jersey. PocketFives: Is there anyone who helped change how you approach the game of poker? Dan Sewnig: I was lucky enough to join a small poker forum when I first started playing online that ended up having a few future sickos in it, including Joe McKeehen and Chad Eveslage. Joe is now approaching close to $2 million in live earning despite being my age, while Chad recently hit $3 million in earnings and finished in the top 100 of the WSOP Main Event. Talking to those guys when I was younger and seeing the successes they have had through tons of hard work combined with natural ability has always given me the feeling that if I put the effort and work into it I could do this full-time. For now, though, it will an enjoyable and hopefully lucrative hobby as I begin my career as a teacher. I also am part of a Skype group with several other solid New Jersey poker players that makes playing more enjoyable and occasionally leads to some good strategy conversations. A few guys in that chat really helped me to change my mindset and to stop being so negative. I realized a few important things: 1) I am not as good as I think I am. That goes for everyone! You can always improve, so rather than blaming bad luck, look for ways to better your game. 2) Stricter bankroll management can really help take some pressure off. If you're following the 50x rule for playing tournaments but you find yourself still getting overly frustrated when you bust your biggest buy-in, then make sure you have 100 buy-ins going forward. Third, I was taking myself too seriously. Poker should be fun and while it is a stressful endeavor, you shouldn't get angry about losing or feel entitled when it comes to winning. You don't deserve to win flips in big spots. You aren't entitled to the win just because you know you are better than your opponents. And you definitely shouldn't insult people who are playing poorly. Forget about the concepts of "tapping the glass" and worrying about making the fish stop playing. Just be a decent human being and stop taking out your frustrations on some person just trying to have fun playing poker. Just because you have a screen in front of you and the other person isn't visible does not give you the right to call someone an idiot. Whether people agree with me on these points are not, I have really tried following them and it has led to me being more relaxed and happier while I play. PocketFives: What is your favorite poker room to play live in? Dan Sewnig: Parx and it's not even close. It's less than a half hour from my house, every table is nine-handed there, it's always clean, the dealers are all good, it's separated from the casino area so it is less noisy, and this list could just go on and on for me. The Big Stax series they have about four times per year easily gives more play for a smaller buy-in tourney than any other live tournament I have ever seen. Borgata is great in the sense that it attracts the most people, but in their tournaments I have had too many occasions where I have been explaining rules to the dealer, or someone refuses to move over so I have leg room, or someone is so drunk that they are slowing the game down considerably. That kind of thing just doesn't happen at Parx. And as far as the Big Stax series goes, Matt Glantz really listens to players and actively tries to improve everything going on, even when it is already going well. For me, Parx is just a level above the rest right now. PocketFives: Anything else you would like to add? Dan Sewnig: I'd like to give a shout out to my girlfriend, Kelsey, who has not only tolerated the time I put into this game, but has always encouraged it. I always thought it would be really difficult to balance dating someone and putting real sessions in, but she has always been nothing but supportive. It means the world to me. Thank you Kelsey and I love you!
  2. This weekend in New Jersey, 12 PocketFivers took down tournaments, which included all of the Sunday Majors. Chopping the PartyPoker/Borgata Poker$50,000 Guarantee were David phatchoy888Cheng and letsflipit, who will both pocket $8,293 for their efforts. Winning the 888 PokerBig Sunday $10,000 Guarantee was PocketFiver adog26, who cashed for $3,275. Finding himself in the winner's circle of the WSOP $25,000 Guarantee Sunday Major was Jesse No_Xcape Elliot, (pictured, ranked #7 in New Jersey). Elliot outlasted a field of 131 players to claim the top prize of $6,875. With this win, Elliot now has a win in three different Sunday Majors in New Jersey. The other two are the PartyPoker/Borgata Poker $50,000 Guarantee and the Ultimate Poker $20,000 Guarantee. Congrats to all PocketFivers who cashed this weekend. 7. [caption width="640"] Mike 'JohnnyDrama' Haberman lead in the New Jersey rankings shrunk during January.[/caption] A lot can change in a month and it has in the PocketFives New Jersey Online Poker Rankings. Players have dropped, some farther than others, and players have risen, with the majority of that change occurring towards the middle of the top ten. That’s because Michael 'JohnnyDrama' Haberman has held his spot atop those rankings as the calendar shifts into February, albeit by a much smaller margin than the last time these rankings were updated. One of the main reasons Haberman has kept pole position on the rest of New Jersey is thanks to his two wins on WSOP.com in the middle of January. Haberman won the $2,500 NJ High-Roller on January 14th and followed that win with a 3rd place finish in the same event later that week. He wasn’t done though, as he won the $5K Nightly on WSOP.com to finish that week off, earning just under $6,000 for his scores in that week alone. That week-long stretch of success wasn’t it though, as Haberman has been one of the most successful and consistent players throughout the New Jersey sites over the last few months. He’s recorded over 45 top ten finishes over the last two months, in a wide variety of tournaments. That success put him well ahead of the rest of the field early this year but that field looks like they're starting to make a push to the top. Last month, it was Jon 'itsmejon' Borenstein who was hot on Haberman’s tail but after a month of nearly no online activity, compared to his high volume standards, he’s fallen completely out of the New Jersey top 20. Borenstein’s been on the live grind and won't be too upset with his ranking downslide, as he added $86,000 to his bankroll thanks to a 6th place finish in the 5,101 player $2,000,000 Winter Poker Open event held last month at Borgata. So while 'itsmejon' falls, Keith 'donnysack' Donovan climbs and becomes the player closest to Haberman. Donovan is now just over 40 PLB points away from the top spot in New Jersey and that rise is mostly helped by Donovan’s recent WSOP.com $30K Sunday Major win, a victory that netted him $9,391 and nearly 165 PLB points. The uptick continued for players below Borenstein, as Yong 'ykwon17' Kwon moved up to the #3 slot. Kwon has nine podium finishes in 2016, including five wins, the biggest of which came in the January 12th $10K on WSOP.com. That win was good for just under $3,200 and someone who knows a little something about winning those $10K events is Daniel 'RedsoxNets5' Sewnig. [caption width="640"] Daniel 'RedsoxNets5' Sewnig enters the New Jersey rankings in the top five after a torrid January (photo credit Will O'Connor).[/caption] Sewnig has been crushing in 2016, with an insane amount of volume resulting in one of the best month-long stretches we’ve seen push himself into the #4 spot on the New Jersey rankings. Sewnig has 22 podium finishes over the last month with six outright wins, including three in the WSOP.com nightly $10K. He’s now just shy of 150 PLB points behind New Jersey’s leader 'JohnnyDrama', meaning that the next few weeks could and should only continue to shake up the leaderboard. That shakeup seems to have already begun towards the bottom half of the top ten though, as Michael 'Gags30' Gagliano has quickly moved himself into the #5 spot heading into February. Mike 'MikeyCasino' Azzaro has also moved himself into the top ten, with a complete list of the Garden State top ten listed below: JohnnyDrama - 2,552.01 donnysack - 2,510.82 ykwon17 - 2,497.02 RedsoxNets5 - 2,399.31 Gags30 - 2,300.41 ol muggins - 2,264.33 Mergulas - 2,258.67 PocketProfits - 2,194.44 No_Xcape - 2,161.60 MikeyCasino - 2,160.60

  9. [caption width="640"] Matt 'mattybuns1' Laverty (left), Jason Somerville and Daniel ‘RedsoxNets5’ Sewnig after the Run It Up: Resorts Rumble[/caption] Over 125 members of the Run It Up Legion - along with their fearless leader Jason Somerville and a handful of other Team PokerStars pros - took over a ballroom at the Resorts Casino in Atlantic City on Saturday for the first live event held by PokerStars since the company launched their product in the Garden State a few months back. The Run It Up: Resorts event wasn’t just a poker tournament though. The event was designed to give attendees, all of whom made a $10 donation to Autism Speaks as admission, face-to-face time with Somerville, Chris Moneymaker, Vanessa Selbst, Barry Greenstein, Liv Boeree and Jennifer Shahade. Players were treated to breakfast before the $30 buy-un Run It Up Resorts: Rumble kicked off. Instead of having a room full of dealers, the event was played on PokerStarsNJ.com with only attendees being allowed to play. When play reached the final table, the tournament was paused to allow those players to sit at the same table in the ballroom and play down to a winner. For Daniel ‘RedsoxNets5’ Sewnig, the sixth-ranked player in New Jersey, the event ended about as perfectly as possible. He beat out the other 123 players to take the top prize of $778.67. Not bad considering he won his way into the event in a PokerStars freeroll. “It was a 50 StarsCoin rebuy - so I got into this for a buck and half - 150 StarsCoins,” said Sewnig. “The package that I won, the way they did it, the top 15 got the $10 to come here whereas the top three got $200 cash, the ticket to come here and two nights stay here and I got the top three so I came in last night.” Run It Up: Resorts Rumble Final Table Results monkeyman067 - $778.67 Matt 'mattybuns1' Laverty - $541.53 s.l. halper - $411.30 casperskulls - $304.66 DomBagz - $203.11 Mr.Shipawitz - $169.26 umasspoker11 - $135.40 gruemoon - $101.55 jpinyan - $84.63 Somerville, who also played the tournament and was in contention until busting on the bubble, streamed throughout the day on his Twitch channel. Just 24 hours earlier he had been in Canada, streaming his playing in the PokerStars.com Spring Championship of Online Poker. He made a final table Thursday before making his way to New Jersey where he got the chance to connect with a number of his fans. “t’s just great to see people not only here in person, being energetic, enthusiastic and passionate but wearing Run It Up gear, telling me that they watch the stream every day, that they love the stream,” said Somerville, who headed back to Canada Sunday to resume SCOOP play. “It’s always great for me to leave the dirty basement every once in a while just to interact with the fans face-to-face and it it really reinvigorates my passion for both streaming and for poker really.” Some of those in attendance had come from out of state, including surrounding states New York and Pennsylvania, but one player had driven in from Indiana - a 13-hour drive. The timing of the event also allowed players coming to New Jersey to play NJSCOOP, which kicked off Sunday, to come in a day early. “Somerville has been streaming the first half of global SCOOP and I finally got my bankroll up in a cash game where I could set aside some funds to commit,” said Colin Byerly, who came from Harrisburg, PA to play. “So I can take a little bit of focus off of my main job and really commit to excelling my game and maybe getting a couple of good deep runs, building my stack a little more and maybe make a good go of it. After the tournament was over fans were able to ask the Team Pros in attendance questions in an open Q&A session. Even with some of the brightest minds in poker up on stage, most of the questions focused on the future of online poker in the United States, and not strategy or game theory. Greenstein, who actually busted out of the Rumble on the very first hand, admitted to being excited about seeing where legislation was going in the near future. “(New Jersey) is first domino for PokerStars. Where I live is the big domino, which is California,” said Greenstein. “Hopefully after that everybody will want to compact with California and, eventually the world.”

[caption width="640"] Dan Sewnig has had a solid set of live results in 2016[/caption] Among the more scrutinized transitions in poker is carrying over success from the online world into the live arena. While the game is still effectively the same, the surrounding elements are different when playing live and there are players who struggle figuring out how to reconnect all the pieces. If there is a face that represents the young and talented crop of young players that have grown from the seed planted by New Jersey’s online poker regulation, Dan ‘redsoxnets5’ Sewnig might be it. The 25-year-old has been profiled in numerous publications as he has honed his craft in the online streets for the last few years. He may always be an online grinder at heart, but 2016 marks Sewnig’s highest grossing year playing live tournament poker. Sewnig’s career year includes cashes in the Borgata Summer Poker Open and Parx Big Stax XVII main events but the one score that stands above the rest is his final table run in the Borgata Poker Open Six Max event. In one of the toughest fields assembled at the Borgata all year, Sewnig put together two stellar days of poker to finish fourth and notch a career-high score of over $27,000. The Six Max final table was live streamed and Sewnig exuded a cool demeanor that he says gives him an edge when playing live. "I almost always feel calm in live tourneys and enjoy talking to the people at my tables, mainly because I like the social interaction. I really enjoy live poker and that final table was one of the more exciting experiences I've had yet. I thought I might feel nervous on that stage but when I sat down it was just another tournament. I didn't really even fear making mistakes; if people disagreed with something I did then I figured I would just chalk it up to a learning experience and use it to improve." Sewnig has learned a lot about what it means to be a professional in his couple of years of playing for a living and realizes even if you put yourself in a position to succeed, the cards may not cooperate but there is always another day. "You simply cannot control your results in a game like poker. Hoping to achieve a certain level of profit is a bit ridiculous; you can't will yourself into winning a flip with seven left in the biggest MTT you play all year. But you can will yourself into making sure you play as much as possible to get yourself back into that position later on." There is a lot that Sewnig says he has learned in 2016, including better bankroll management skills and when to take some time away from the game. As he has started to expand his horizons in live tournaments, Sewnig has also developed a keen eye for game selection as to which formats best suit his style of play. “I've played more tournaments, put myself out there and sold off a bunch to bigger, better structured events. I often play on the nitty side, which lends itself quite nicely to the championship structures of the bigger buy-in events. This year is the first time I've played anything bigger than a $1K and having those tournaments with 90-minute levels really allows players to go card dead for a few hours and not be in desperate shape.” As the calendar nears the start of the new year, Sewnig says his only goals at this point are volume-based for both live and online. There are plenty of live tournament series that will be at Sewnig’s disposal in the coming months and we may soon see him step into the winner’s circle during that time.
