A relative unknown in the live poker world, Amit Zulkowitz most definitely made a name for himself in the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event. The Israel poker player began Day 6 in solid shape, positioned squarely in the middle of the remaining field of 97 players with 1.52 million chips. He was never really able to get much going, however, reaching a high water mark of almost three million in chips before bowing out in 49th place for $156,000.

The end of Zulkowitz’s 2012 Main Event came a bit before 10:00pm on Day 6. With 2.1 million chips to his name, Zulkowitz called a pre-flop raise of 165,000 by Jeremy Ausmus. On the 9-7-3 flop with two diamonds, Ausmus, sitting in early position, led out with a bet of 200,000. Zulkowitz re-raised to 700,000, Ausmus tacked on an extra two million, and Zulkowitz decided to make the all-in call.

Perhaps surprisingly, Zulkowitz didn’t have an amazing hand, just A-7 of clubs, which was good for middle pair, an overcard, and a backdoor flush draw. Ausmus revealed J-9 offsuit, which gave him the lead with top pair. The turn Q of spades was of no help to Zulkowitz, nor was the 3 of diamonds on the river. Amit Zulkowitz hit the rail in 49th place, while Jeremy Ausmus rocketed up to 13.1 million chips.

The $156,293 paycheck for the Main Event was by far Zulkowitz’s largest live cash. He had just two recorded cashes before this one. The first was a 14th place finish in the 2009 European Masters of Poker Varna Main Event for $6,208, while the second was a victory in a small buy-in event at the 2011 ChiliPoker Deepstack Open in Malta for $4,661.

Hopefully, his performance at the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event will afford Zulkowitz the opportunity to play in some more tournaments so we can see some more deep runs from him in the future.
