Between 2006 and 2011, cable station GSN aired seven seasons of “High Stakes Poker.” The poker show is probably this author’s favorite in the genre, a high-takes cash game featuring some of the top players in the game including the likes of Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, and Doyle Brunson. It contained some of the richest pots in poker history.

Following Season 7, which ended around Black Friday, GSN ceased airing new episodesin the wake of PokerStars, Full Tilt, UB, and Absolute Poker vacating the US market after 11 of their founders and executives were indicted. With the “High Stakes Poker” cast predominantly promoting PokerStars or Full Tilt, the network grew wary. Additionally, in Season 7, PokerStars was the show’s presenting sponsor and had no use for a US marketing spend.

Then, there were three years of “High Stakes Poker” darkness until last week, when GSN unleashed a survey about the franchise. Whether the network plans to rejuvenate the show or is considering jostling its schedule is unclear. A YouTube video promoting the survey was removed at the end of the week, but the survey remained online.

The questionnaire began by asking for a respondent’s age, gender, and country of residence and then asked how many times per week they watched poker on TV. Also asked was whether respondents watched “High Stakes Poker” and whether they have viewed any episodes online.

A series of questions about the “High Stakes Poker” experience were presented, asking how important players at the table, the venue, host Gabe Kaplan, and reporter Kara Scott were. Respondents were then asked what other poker programming they watch as well as what their primary resource for poker information was (we, of course, submitted PocketFives as a write-in candidate).

The final question in the survey, which came in at 17 questions, asked respondents who their favorite poker player was. Answers to this could be used to determine the cast of characters for Season 8.

“High Stakes Poker” originally starred Kaplan and AJ Benza before the latter was axed in 2009. Kaplan then flew solo in the booth, with Scott conducting interviews from the floor of the “High Stakes Poker” suite. Former “Saturday Night Live” star Norm Macdonald was the lone host of Season 7. Many felt his dry humor made for a poor fit with the franchise’s audience.
