Poker pro Olivier livb112Busquet (pictured) has announced that he will fight fellow pro JC PrtyPsuxAlvarado in an MMA-style match, with each man putting up six-figures of his own cash.

The bet seemingly came out of the blue when Busquet floated the idea to his 28,000 Twitter followers. “Looking for MMA training motivation – trying to gauge interest in 6 figure fight from anyone in poker community,” he said.

It didn’t take long before Alvarado, a poker pro with $2.8 million in live tournament cashes to his name, responded and began working out the details with Busquet.

In a recent interview, Busquet, who is a fan of MMA but has little fighting experience, told HUSNG.com that his opponent has taken around 50 kickboxing classes and is a “white/blue belt in BJJ.” With Alvarado’s formal training in mind, the two settled on a bet in which Busquet will risk $120,000 to his opponent’s $150,000.

Busquet explained that the idea for the bet came from his desire to learn how to fight, become fitter, and instill more discipline in his life. One of the main factors in the decision, however, was his recent divorce from his wife. “I’ve gone through a traumatic personal experience, specifically a divorce, and this is part of my attempt to forge a new identity,” he said.

There will undoubtedly be plenty of side action happening for the fight against Alvarado (pictured), which Busquet says will take place in April 2016. But the 34-year-old says that he won’t be participating in any side betting; “$150k is plenty of money,” he said.

If Busquet loses the bet, it won’t likely make too much of a dent in his bankroll. The New York native has over $6.8 million in live tournament winnings to his name, which includes a deep run in this year’s WSOP Millionaire Maker for $589,569. One of his biggest cashes came during the 2014 EPT, where he took first place and €896,434 in a Super High Roller event.

Prop bets on fighting matches between poker players is nothing new. In 2011, after two years of planning, Bertrand ElkYGrospellier took on Lex RaSZi Velduis in a venue provided by Spanish TV. Veldhuis came out on top after landing two punishing kicks to Grospellier’s head.

Alvarado himself has was slated to go up against high-stakes pro Andrew good2cu Robl in November 2013. But according to Alvarado, his opponent ended up buying out of the bet and the fight never took place.

Poker pro turned professional MMA fighter Terrence Chan was likely disqualified from participating, but weighed in on the massive purse which will be up for grabs. “Winner will make more money from this fight than all but a small handful of UFC champions,” he Tweeted.

Asked if he was concerned about suffering permanent injuries from the fight, Busquet responded that he wasn’t too worried. “It would be a major concern if I were becoming a professional fighter, but this is really about training and fighting one fight,” he said. “It’s a fight for someone who has never fought before and will be over 20 pounds lighter than me. Sure there’s some risk, but there is risk when you drive a car go skiing.”

Busquet’s bet already seems to be having the desired effect. On Friday, he posted a picture of his badly blistered foot. “First day on the mat… Going to be a long six months,” he said.
